Culturally adapted versus standard exposure treatment for phobic Asian Americans: Treatment efficacy, moderators, and predictors.

This study is a 6-month follow-up of a randomized pilot evaluation of standard one-session treatment (OST-S) versus culturally adapted OST (OST-CA) with phobic Asian Americans. OST-CA included seven cultural adaptations drawn from prior research with East Asians and Asian Americans. Results from 1-week and 6-month follow-up show that both OST-S and OST-CA were effective at reducing phobic symptoms compared with self-help control. Moreover, OST-CA was superior to OST-S for several outcomes. For catastrophic thinking and general fear, moderator analyses indicated that low-acculturation Asian Ame

A Review of Teen Dating Violence Prevention Research: What About Hispanic Youth?

The purpose of this article is to provide a critical review of the literature on evidence-based teen dating violence (TDV) prevention programs with a particular focus on highlighting gaps in the literature with regard to prevention efforts targeting Hispanic teens. The target populations, characteristics, designs, and results of TDV prevention studies reported in the scientific literature for the last 20 years were reviewed and analyzed according to cultural and contextual factors associated with TDV among Hispanic teens. To date, three studies have focused on a predominantly Hispanic populati

Prevalence and Predictors of Postpartum Maternal and Infant Bed-Sharing Among Chinese-Canadian Women.

Objective/Background: Our primary objective was to describe and identify predictors of any and predominant bed-sharing at 4 and 12 weeks postpartum among Chinese-Canadian mothers. Participants: We conducted a longitudinal study of 570 Chinese immigrant and Canadian-born women in Toronto, Ontario. Methods: Any bed-sharing, defined as sharing a bed or mattress for any part of the night on any night in the previous week, and predominant bed-sharing, defined as sharing a bed or mattress for most of the night, on more than half the nights of the previous week, were evaluated at 4 and 12 weeks postp

What a Hug Does: A Qualitative Study of Chinese Immigrant Families' Experiences with Inpatient Palliative Care Specialists.

BACKGROUND: Compared with non-Chinese adults in high-income countries, ethnically Chinese patients are more likely to encounter palliative care (PC) closer to death and in hospital settings. Yet, Chinese families' experiences and perception of inpatient PC remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: Identify barriers and facilitators to culturally respectful PC for Chinese immigrant inpatients and their caregivers. DESIGN: Prospective, exploratory qualitative design involving phenomenological interviews. SETTING/SUBJECTS: We consecutively recruited (n = 15) Chinese immigrant patients and their caregivers (n

Barriers and facilitators to recruitment to a culturally-based dietary intervention among urban Hispanic breast cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to understand factors related to recruitment to behavioral intervention trials among Spanish-speaking urban Hispanic breast cancer (BC) survivors. METHODS: Potentially eligible Hispanic BC survivors were recruited from the Columbia University Breast Oncology Clinic, signed informed consent, and completed a screening interview on demographics, medical history, acculturation (Short Acculturation Scale for Hispanics), quality of life (QOL), and perceived benefits/risks of research participation. Trial eligibility criteria included stage 0-III BC, completion

Predictors of Academic Adjustment Among International Students in Rural Southern USA.

Academic adaptation is crucial for the success and well-being of international students, especially in rural areas where cultural and social support resources may be limited. This study aimed to identify predictors of academic adaptation among international students in the rural southern United States, focusing on social support, cultural integration, alcohol use, and acculturative stress. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 141 international students from two universities: the University of Mississippi/Oxford campus and the University of Alabama. Data were collected through a web-based

Advance Directive Completion Among Older Southeast Asian Americans: The Case of Vietnamese and Filipino Populations.

The Southeast Asian American population aged 55 or above remains understudied in research on advance directives (AD), despite their importance for end-of-life decision-making and quality of care. This study examined factors associated with AD completion among older Vietnamese and Filipino Americans, guided by Andersen's Health Service Use Model. Using a cross-sectional survey among 192 Vietnamese Americans and 140 Filipino Americans aged 55 or above, this study found that older age was significantly associated with higher odds of AD completion, whereas greater family conflict and lower income

Disparities in Electronically Monitored Antiretroviral Adherence and Differential Adherence Predictors in Latinx and Non-Latinx White Persons Living with HIV.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence is vital for optimal HIV treatment. However, there is limited ART adherence research on the US Latinx population, who are at increased risk for HIV infection and worse HIV health outcomes. This study examined electronically measured ART adherence (Medication Event Monitoring System) and its association with demographic, clinical, neurocognitive, and sociocultural variables in Latinx and non-Latinx white (NLW) persons living with HIV [PLWH (N = 128)]. Latinx participants demonstrated worse adherence than NLW participants (p = 0.04). Linear regressions reve

Former Soviet Union immigrant and native-born adolescents in Israel: substance use and related problem behavior.

Studies on immigration and adolescence show that youth experience a variety of emotional and cognitive adjustments as well as conflicts related to acculturation and the realities of life in their new country. Such conditions place many of them at increased risk for psychosocial problems including personal stress, interpersonal conflicts, mental illness, school failure, delinquency, substance use, and other risk-taking behavior. This prospective study compares the patterns of substance use and problem behaviors among 365 at-risk adolescents born in Israel and those who immigrated to that countr

AIDS knowledge among Latinos: the roles of language, culture, and socioeconomic status.

AIDS has a disproportionate effect on persons of Latino origin, who have lower knowledge of AIDS than other ethnic groups. This study assessed AIDS knowledge among Latino adults in New Jersey according to acculturation and socioeconomic status. Data on 121 Latino adults were collected in spring 2000 using bilingual telephone interviews. Respondents were selected using the Census' Latino surname methodology. Items were adapted from the National Health Interview Survey Supplement on AIDS Knowledge and Attitudes and the Marin acculturation scale. AIDS knowledge was more strongly associated with l

[E. M. Jellinek's silenced and silencing transgenerational story].

Jellinek is a kind of archetypal character for future generations in the field of addiction studies. His implosion in the arena of alcoholism around the age of 50 was an unexpected challenge to medical science. We know very little about his own role models giving an intellectual and moral compass to his pragmatic creativity. More than 30 years has passed since Jellinek's death when an American sociologist Ron Roizen started unearthing his silent story. Roizen discerned that there are a lot of unsaid and muted issues in his personal Hungarian past. Our paper, based on the authors' research in H

Trans-cultural comparison of disordered eating in Korean women.

OBJECTIVE: The presence of eating disorders in non-Western cultures is often attributed to the export of Western ideals. This study examines this hypothesis by comparing disordered eating attitudes and behaviors in Korean women with differing levels of exposure to Western culture. METHOD: Second-generation Korean-Americans (n=167) and Korean immigrants (n=37) completed the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), and data from native Koreans (n=937) were obtained from a previous epidemiological study, using a Korean-translated version of the EAT-26 (K-EAT-26). Korean-American and immigrant women compl

Reducing the risk of gonorrhoea in black Caribbean men: can we identify risk factors?

OBJECTIVES: Grouping patients by self assigned ethnicity may hide intraethnic differences in disease associations and sexual behaviour patterns. The aim of the study was to detect associations between gonorrhoea with differences in ancestry, degree of acculturation, and religious belief in young black Caribbean men, which could subsequently be used to target health promotion interventions. METHODS: A questionnaire based case-control study of black Caribbean men with gonorrhoea and a community control group without gonorrhoea. RESULTS: A lesser degree of acculturation, attending a single sex

Interparental conflict and risk behaviors among Mexican American adolescents: a cognitive-emotional model.

This study used a cognitive-emotional model to examine the relations between multiple dimensions of interparental conflict and health risk behaviors among young adolescents. Participants were 151 Mexican American adolescents and their parents. At initial individual interviews, parents reported on conflict with their spouses, and adolescents reported on their parents' conflict, their appraisals of the conflict, their emotional distress, and their acculturation level. At 6-month follow-ups, adolescents reported on their risk behaviors, including substance use and sexual activity. In general, ado

Breast cancer screening practices among Cambodian women in Houston, Texas.

BACKGROUND: Faced with Western medicine and a health care system that is unfamiliar, Cambodian women experience barriers to breast cancer prevention activities and thus are seldom reached through current breast cancer education and prevention activities. This study examined the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of breast cancer screening among Cambodian women in Houston, Texas. METHODS: Two hundred sixteen Cambodian women aged 18 years or older were surveyed by telephone. RESULTS: Logistic regression analysis identified five variables as significant predictors of ever having had a clinical

How do pre-migration crisis exposures and post-migration cultural stressors shape mental health symptoms among Venezuelan youth in the United States and Colombia?

Pre-migration crisis exposures and post-migration cultural stressors predict mental health symptoms among Venezuelan migrant youth. However, less is known about the independent and interactive effects of pre- and post-migration stressors on multiple mental health symptoms and whether these associations vary across specific types of cultural stressors among Venezuelan youth. Importantly, few studies have examined how these associations are patterned across two major destinations for Venezuelan migrants-the United States (US) and Colombia. The present study was designed to examine how pre-migrat

Results of Mujeres Felices por ser Saludables: a dietary/breast health randomized clinical trial for Latino women.

BACKGROUND: Data are limited on the efficacy of health-focused interventions for young, low-acculturated Latino women. Because breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the most common cause of cancer mortality in this population, combined interventions that address both early detection and dietary patterns could help reduce both morbidity and mortality associated with breast cancer in this underserved population. PURPOSE: Mujeres Felices por ser Saludables was randomized intervention study designed to assess the efficacy of an 8-month combined dietary and breast health interven

Predictors of condom acquisition after an STD clinic visit.

Data from a survey of 691 men and women who made patient visits to an inner-city, sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic and were given coupons to redeem for condoms at a neighborhood pharmacy show that only 22% of the sample did so. Gender, ethnicity, marital status and education were not significant predictors of whether study participants redeemed their coupons. Factors that significantly predicted coupon redemption included the extent of acculturation and age, with those who were older and less acculturated more likely to do so. Other significant factors were having a primary sexual par

Factors Associated With Self-Perceived Hearing Handicap in Adults From Hispanic/Latino Background: Findings From the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine what factors, including acculturation (language and social contact preferences), were associated with self-perceived hearing handicap among adults from Hispanic/Latino background. We utilized the Aday-Andersen behavioral model of health services utilization to frame our hypotheses that predisposing characteristics (age, sex, education, city of residence, Hispanic/Latino background, and acculturation), enabling resources (annual income and current health insurance coverage), and need (measured hearing loss and self-reported hearing loss) would be related to cl
