Ipsilateral acoustic reflex thresholds were studied in otoscopically normal ears of infants 2 weeks to 12 months old. Probe tones of 220 and 660 Hz and pure tone activators were used. Reflex recordings were free of activator artifact and were measured using quantitative standards. Reflexes were detected in 85% to 95% of infant ears for 500, 1,000, and 2,000 Hz activators but were present in only 76% of ears at 4,000 Hz. The time course of the impedance changes caused by the contralateral acoustic reflex was investigated in five normal hearing, young adult subjects The acoustic reflex function was measured with equipment having a time constant of 15 milliseconds which permitted precise temporal measures. Temporal intervals from signal onset and termination to various portions of the acoustic reflex function were derived using an analysis procedure based on the slope function underlying the acoustic reflex response. These temporal intervals are related to physiological events underlying the acoustic reflex.

A critical bibliography of published articles concerning the effects of noise exposure on hearing has been compiled for the NIH. The review concentrated on articles published over the last 14 years; however, historical highlights of the past 50 years or so were included for continuity. Loudness balance and acoustic reflex tests were conducted on 11 hearing impaired patients. At all frequencies tested, equal loudness judgments made by each patient occurred at acoustic reflex threshold levels in each ear. Test results were classified into three general patterns and a Difference Ratio Quotient (DRQ) expressed the relationship between binaural acoustic reflex and pure tone thresholds. Additional information was derived from the DRQ formula to permit more accurate quantification of recruitment.
