The PREvention Program for Adolescent Relationship and Emotional Development (PREPARED): a proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: The bi-directional link between mental health problems and intimate partner violence (IPV) is well established, yet there is a lack of prevention approaches directly targeting both during adolescence. This study conducted a mixed-methods pilot evaluation of the Prevention Program for Adolescent Relationship and Emotional Development (PREPARED), a weekly, six-session, non-specialist delivered, prevention program to promote mental health and prevent IPV. This proof-of-concept study tested implementation outcomes and measured mental health and relationship attitude and behavior change

Does Substance Abuse Predict the Development of Mental Health Disorders in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Patients?

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine whether substance abuse among adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients is associated with increased odds of subsequent new-onset mental health disease (MHD). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: MHD prevalence in patients with a substance abuse history has been well-described. However, the impact of current or historical substance abuse/dependence in AIS patients on the risk of subsequent development of new-onset MHDs is unknown. METHODS: The New York SPARCS database was reviewed to identify all 10-25-year-old

Impact of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) exposure on reproductive development in adolescent offspring.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are known to disrupt neuroendocrine functions and impaired perinatal growth and reproductive health. However, the long-term reproductive toxicity of PBDEs following perinatal exposure remains poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of perinatal exposure to 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) on reproductive development in adolescent offspring. Female C57BL/6 J mice were exposed to BDE-47 at doses of 0 (control), 10, and 50 mg/kg during the perinatal period (gestational day 13.5 to postnatal day 7). Subsequently, gonadal tissues and

Beyond delinquency and drug use: Links of peer pressure to long-term adolescent psychosocial development.

This study examined the predictors and sequelae of exposure to peer pressure from close friends in adolescence. Adolescents (99 female; 85 male) were followed from age 13 to 24 utilizing peer, parent, and romantic partner reports and observational data. Participants who were exposed to high levels of peer pressure as teens were more likely to experience higher levels of coercive behavior from romantic partners (as reported by those partners), as well as lower levels of parent-reported functional independence. All findings held even after accounting for baseline levels of teen assertiveness. Ad

Scoliocorrector Fatma-UI for correction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: Development, effectivity, safety and functional outcome.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis remains a major problem due to its high incidence, high risk, and high cost. One of the aims of the management in scoliosis is to correct the deformity. Many techniques are available to correct scoliosis deformity; however, they are all far from ideal to achieve three-dimensional correction in scoliosis. AIM: To develop a set of tools named Scoliocorrector Fatma-UI (SCFUI) to aid three-dimensional correction and to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and functional outcome. METHODS: This study consists of two stages. In the first stage, we developed the

Prevalence and correlates of concussion in children: Data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

INTRODUCTION: Concussions are one of the most common causes for emergency room use in the United States (US) among youth and adolescents; however, prevalence data on concussion in this population are inconsistent. A growing body of literature has explored associations of a range of variables with pediatric concussion, but they have not been explored simultaneously in a well-powered sample in the US. The present study aimed to present lifetime concussion prevalence, evaluate demographic, psychological, and cognitive correlates of concussion, and assess for differences across these variables bas

Association between twin status with cognitive, behavioral development and brain structure in early adolescence: a retrospective cohort analysis based on the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

Twin births are related with maternal and fetal adverse outcomes. Little was known about the comparability of the cognitive, behavioral development and brain structure between twins and singletons in early adolescence. This retrospective cohort study was based on data from the United States population-based, prospective, longitudinal observational Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. Children with complete twin status information were enrolled, and the exposure variable was twin status. Primary outcomes were cognitive, behavioral development and brain structure in early adolescence. C

Psychosexual development in adolescents and adults with disorders of sex development--results from the German Clinical Evaluation Study.

INTRODUCTION: Both biological and psychosocial factors influence psychosexual development. High levels of pre- and postnatal androgens lead to more male-typical behavior. So far, the influence of androgens on gender identity and sexual orientation is unclear. Disorders of sex development (DSDs) are heterogeneous genetic conditions with different levels of prenatal androgens resulting in variations of genital development. Through DSD, the role of the different factors, especially androgen exposure, on psychosexual development can be evaluated. AIM: The purpose of the study was to assess psycho

Editorial: From adolescence into young adulthood - the importance of a longitudinal perspective across development in child and adolescent mental health.

The transition from adolescence into adulthood is a pivotal phase in a person's life, marking a period of significant social, psychological, and biological changes that can profoundly impact an individual's well-being and developmental trajectory. During this period, adolescents and young adults face increasing environmental demands from academic or occupational responsibilities and social interactions, including the pursuit of romantic partners. These changes are inherently related to stress, which is essential for adolescents and young adults to develop their personality and form an identity

Screen time and manic symptoms in early adolescents: prospective findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine prospective associations between screen time and manic symptoms in early adolescents, and the extent to which problematic screen use (characterized by addiction, conflict, relapse, and withdrawal) mediates the association. METHODS: We analyzed prospective cohort data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (N = 9,243; ages 10-11 years in Year 1 in 2017-2019; 48.8% female; 44.0% racial/ethnic minority). Participants reported daily time spent on six different screen subtypes. Linear regression analyses were used to determine associations betwee

Identifying significant environmental predictors of change in delay discounting among adolescents in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

Delay discounting (a preference for smaller immediate rewards vs. larger delayed rewards; DD) is a transdiagnostic risk factor for health outcomes including substance use disorders, obesity, and others. Studies have identified numerous individual-level factors associated with DD in adolescents, however, research into how family, neighborhood, and larger environmental factors may impact DD have been limited by either examining very few environmental factors and/or using cross-sectional measures on DD. Identifying demographic and environmental predictors of both static levels of DD during adoles

Identifying patterns and predictors of social health in adolescence using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

Social health, having an adequate quantity and quality of social relationships, is essential for well-being but understudied during adolescence compared to adulthood. We sought to identify patterns and predictors of social health by characterizing peer relationships among 10,050 adolescents (10-13 years old, 4,815 girls, 53.68% non-Hispanic White) in Year 2 of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. To characterize social health profiles, we applied latent profile analysis on peer variables collected in Year 2: number of friends (close, general), aggression, victimization, relationsh
