Do Panic Symptoms Affect the Quality of Life and Add to the Disability in Patients with Bronchial Asthma?

Background. Anxiety and panic are known to be associated with bronchial asthma with variety of impact on clinical presentation, treatment outcome, comorbidities, quality of life, and functional disability in patients with asthma. This study aims to explore the pattern of panic symptoms, prevalence and severity of panic disorder (PD), quality of life, and disability in them. Methods. Sixty consecutive patients of bronchial asthma were interviewed using semistructured proforma, Panic and Agoraphobia scale, WHO Quality of life (QOL) BREF scale, and WHO disability schedule II (WHODAS II). Results.

Turning the pink cloud grey: dampening of positive affect predicts postpartum depressive symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Maladaptive response styles to negative affect have been shown to be associated with prospective (postpartum) depression. Whether maladaptive styles to positive affect are also critically involved is understudied, even though anhedonia (a correlate of low positive affectivity) is a cardinal symptom of depression. The present study is the first to investigate the predictive value of cognitive response styles to both negative (depressive rumination) and positive affect (dampening) for postpartum depressive symptoms. METHODS: During the third trimester of pregnancy, 210 women complete

Psychological Resilience, Affective Mechanisms and Symptom Burden in a Tertiary-care Sample of Patients with Fibromyalgia.

Research demonstrates that patients with fibromyalgia who have higher positive and lower negative affect have lower symptom burden. Affect has been shown to be associated with resilience. This study examined the relationship between affect, resilience and fibromyalgia symptom burden in a clinical sample of patients with fibromyalgia. We hypothesized that (a) positive and negative affect would be associated with fibromyalgia symptom burden; (b) resilience would be associated with positive and negative affect; (c) resilience would be associated with fibromyalgia symptom burden; and (d) the conne

Body affects mind? Preoperative behavioral and biological predictors for postoperative symptoms in mental health.

The study examined differential effects of preoperative biomarkers (cotisol, C-reactive protein/CRP, and interleukin-6/IL-6) on postoperative symptoms in mental health (depressed mood, anxiety and hostility) 1 month following open-heart surgery, controlling for known predictors. Preoperative and postoperative interviews were conducted on 162 patients. Peripheral venous blood samples were collected between 8 and 10 a.m. prior to surgery. Cardiac indices were obtained from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons' national database. Preoperative anxiety contributed to all outcomes about 1 month postoper

How diet therapy affects obesity-associated depressive symptoms: from mechanism to therapeutics.

Obesity stands as a formidable 21st-century public health crisis, with its capacity to aggravate depressive symptoms gaining increasing clinical attention. Traditional treatment models often treat these two conditions separately. However, recent research evidence suggests a complex network linking obesity and depressive symptoms across metabolism, behavior, and mental health, with dietary patterns proposed as a key upstream modulator of both metabolic and psychological pathways. The specific mechanisms by which diet influences obesity and depressive symptoms remain unclear. Therefore, this nar

[The role of psychological factors in the frequency and experience of menstrual symptoms: negative affect and somatosensory amplification].

INTRODUCTION: Menstruation-related symptoms affect a significant proportion of women of reproductive age. In addition to biological factors, psychological and social influences also play a role in the development and experience of these symptoms. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to examine the associations between menstrual symptoms, menstrual distress and various biopsychosocial factors, with particular focus on negative affect, somatosensory amplification, age, age at menarche, and the presence of gynecological or endocrinological conditions. METHOD: Our online survey was conducted betw

Mediational Effect of Positive and Negative Affect on the Relationship Between Emotional Symptoms and Suicidal Risk.

BACKGROUND: Suicide has been linked to emotional disorders which, according to the transdiagnostic model, share common constructs such as positive and negative affect. This study examined the mediating role of positive and negative affect in the relationship between emotional symptoms and suicide risk. METHOD: The sample included 1,014 participants (33.82% male, 66.17% female) aged 18 to 75 years (M = 33.0, SD = 15.15). Four independent mediation analyses were conducted, using depressive, anxious, somatization, and obsessive symptomatology (measured with the LSB-50) as independent variables;

Label matters: how labeling and diagnosis affect lay perception of people with depressive symptoms.

We investigated how the label "depression" and information about a medical diagnosis influence perceptions of individuals with depressive symptoms as legitimately experiencing depression and a medical condition. In three experiments, participants read a description of a person meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) criteria for major depressive episode and manipulated whether the label "depression" and the information about a professional medical diagnosis were included. Participants were more likely to perceive the person as having depression when both the label

Negative affective responsivity to daily stressors in young adults: The influence of depressive symptom severity.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that adults with major depressive disorder appraise daily stressor events as more severe and report stronger stressor-related negative emotions than non-depressed adults. Despite the growing number of young adults (~18-25 yrs) experiencing depressive symptoms in the absence of a formal clinical diagnosis, limited studies have examined whether current depressive symptom severity influences affective responsivity to daily stressors in young men and women. We tested the hypotheses that greater depressive symptom severity would be related to greater negative stressor

COVID-19 affects psychological symptoms of pregnant women indirectly by increasing their maternal concerns.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women themselves are at higher risk for psychological symptoms. The impact of ongoing COVID-19 may increase the risk. However, it is uncertain whether COVID-19 affects pregnant women's psychological symptoms directly or indirectly being mediated. METHODS: This survey was conducted in four obstetrics and gynecology hospitals in Beijing from February 28, 2020, to April 26, 2020. Pregnant women who visited the antenatal-care clinic were mobilized to finish the online questionnaires, including the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-Item Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Conn

How is the COVID-19 pandemic affecting individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms?

The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has caused substantial public health burden and widespread anxiety. The adverse mental health effects caused by COVID-19 may be particularly acute for individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). For the present study, we developed an online survey to investigate how COVID-19 has affected the OCD community. The survey included both quantitative and qualitative questions to assess multiple facets of how the pandemic has affected individuals with OCD symptoms. Responses were collected from adults with self-identified OCD recruited from O

Factors affecting time between symptom onset and emergency department arrival in stroke patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Delays in seeking care compromise diagnosis, treatment options, and outcomes in ischemic strokes. This study identified factors associated with time between stroke symptom onset and emergency department (ED) arrival at a private nonprofit medical center serving a large rural catchment area in central Texas, with the goal of identifying symptomatic, demographic, and historical factors that might influence seeking care. METHODS: Demographic and clinical data from a large tertiary care center's Get With The Guidelines (GWTG) database were evaluated in 1874 patients presen

Measurement of drusen and their correlation with visual symptoms in patients affected by age-related macular degeneration.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common retinal disorder, which became more and more prevalent in the last decades. AMD is now the most prevalent cause of blindness in the western world. The disorder is classified into two phenotypes named dry and wet AMD. This is based on the recruitment of novel blood vessels and inflammatory exudates in wet AMD. In both phenotypes, the pathological hallmark is the presence of proteinaceous aggregates called drusen, which mostly accumulate between the choroid and the retinal pigment. Drusen in dry AMD represent the evident pathological finding alt

Do Symptoms of Depression Interact with Substance Use to Affect HIV Continuum of Care Outcomes?

Few studies examine how depression and substance use interact to affect HIV control. In 14,380 persons with HIV (PWH), we used logistic regression and generalized estimating equations to evaluate how symptoms of depression interact with alcohol, cocaine, opioid, and methamphetamine use to affect subsequent retention in care, maintaining an active prescription for ART, and consistent virologic suppression. Among PWH with no or mild depressive symptoms, heavy alcohol use had no association with virologic suppression (OR 1.00 [0.95-1.06]); among those with moderate or severe symptoms, it was asso

Symptoms and Problems in Children with Inherited Metabolic Diseases and Factors Affecting the Caregiver Burden of Mothers.

Parents need to constantly monitor their children with inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs) and have difficulty coordinating care. The aim of this descriptive study was to determine the symptoms and problems in children with IMDs and factors affecting caregiver burden. The study was conducted in a pediatric hospital. The study sample consisted of 47 mothers of children with IMDs. Data were collected using a descriptive characteristics form (DCF), a data collection form related to symptoms and problems (DCFSP), and a caregiver burden inventory (CBI). The most common specific problems were hepato

Efficacy of safinamide on non-motor symptoms in a cohort of patients affected by idiopathic Parkinson's disease.

The primary endpoint of this work was to evaluate the effect of safinamide on non-motor symptoms (NMS) in patients affected by idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) complicated by motor fluctuations. We retrospectively collected data from 20 subjects affected by idiopathic PD in treatment with L-dopa alone or in combination with dopamine agonists, who began to be treated with safinamide due to the occurrence of motor fluctuations. Secondary endpoints included SCales for Outcomes in Parkinson's disease (SCOPA) Motor Scale, cognitive assessment, the Hoehn and Yahr stage, Clinical Impression of Sev

Comparing OCD-affected youth with and without religious symptoms: Clinical profiles and treatment response.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a heterogeneous psychiatric condition, with varied symptom presentations that have been differentially associated with clinical characteristics and treatment response. One OCD symptom cluster of particular interest is religious symptoms, including fears of offending religious figures/objects; patients affected by these symptoms have been characterized as having greater overall OCD severity and poorer treatment response. However, the extant literature primarily examines this symptom subtype within adults, leaving a gap in our understa

Mutation in VPS33A affects metabolism of glycosaminoglycans: a new type of mucopolysaccharidosis with severe systemic symptoms.

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of genetic deficiencies of lysosomal enzymes that catabolize glycosaminoglycans (GAG). Here we describe a novel MPS-like disease caused by a specific mutation in the VPS33A gene. We identified several Yakut patients showing typical manifestations of MPS: coarse facial features, skeletal abnormalities, hepatosplenomegaly, respiratory problems, mental retardation, and excess secretion of urinary GAG. However, these patients could not be diagnosed enzymatically as MPS. They showed extremely high levels of plasma heparan sulphate (HS, one of GAG); 60 times t
