BACKGROUND: Midair collisions are destructive to aircraft and often fatal to occupants, with the additional possibility of death and destruction on the ground. We sought to determine the characteristics of civil aviation mid-air collisions in U.S. airspace with focus on the altitudes at which the collisions took place and radio communications prior to the collisions.
METHODS: Accident reports published by the National Transportation and Safety Board for the period 2000-2004 were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Additional information was extracted from the narrative report of each accid…

Injuries to the cervical region have been associated with high-G loads sustained during air combat maneuvering (ACM) in high performance fighter aircraft. The spectrum of injuries ranges from mild neck pain to musculoskeletal strain, injury to the nerve roots or spinal cord, and fracture of the cervical spine. A 36-year-old fighter pilot with 2,800 h in tactical jet aircraft developed progressive cervical dystonia (spasmodic torticollis), following an ACM flight. The patient was successfully treated with local intramuscular injections of botulinum toxin into the affected cervical muscles, resu…

INTRODUCTION: Parachuting is an activity performed by a variety of occupational groups including the military, firefighters (smoke jumpers), and rescue groups.
METHODS: This paper systematically reviewed the literature on injury risk factors for soldiers performing static line parachuting from military aircraft. Jump-related injuries were defined as those occurring from the time the soldier exited the aircraft until he or she released their parachute harness on the ground.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Despite methodological differences, where two or more studies examined a particular risk factor,…

For the purposes of dose limitation and dose control, the harm, or detriment, of exposure to radiation is assessed by the quantity effective dose. Effective dose is evaluated by the application of factors to the averaged absorbed dose in the organs and tissues of the body. Radiation monitoring instruments are generally calibrated in terms of the quantity ambient dose equivalent which is defined in a simple spherical phantom. The relationship of these quantities is described. Requirements for the radiation protection of aircraft crew are given in the European Union Council Directive 96/29/EURAT…

Identification of aircraft entering a country's sovereign airspace if it shuts down its identification system, either the Identification Friend or Foe system and/or the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast system, has long been a challenge for the National Air Operations Command. Aircraft that do not want their identities to be revealed are called black flights and generally have certain missions that can interfere with the sovereignty of a country's airspace. Military radar units that have the task of monitoring airspace are generally equipped with Primary Surveillance Radar that detect…

INTRODUCTION: Midair collisions cause loss of life and property and undermine general aviation; they also represent failures of the see-and-avoid concept in air traffic control. This study identifies limitations of the see-and-avoid concept.
METHODS: Analysis of National Transportation Safety Board data on 159 U.S. civil aviation midair collisions and limitations of the see-and-avoid concept.
RESULTS: On average, there were 15.6 midair collisions annually from 1991 through 2000. At least one aircraft was maneuvering in 88% of collisions, and both in 70%. There were 77% that involved arrival …

Tuberculosis has spread by human movements throughout history. There have been reports indicating tuberculosis transmission on all travel vehicles, including aircrafts, ground vehicles and vessels until today. However, due to the ever increasing of air transportation and air travelling among countries with low and high tuberculosis incidence, transmission risk especially in aircrafts has become an important issue worldwide. But in many of the studies conducted in this regard, transmission of tuberculosis in aircrafts was found very low. The case of active tuberculosis has not yet been reported…

We report a case of a midair collision between two F16 fighter aircraft, in which one pilot survived and the other was ejected upon impact and his remains recovered from sea. In autopsy, no patholgy was detected, other than the expected evidence of mechanical trauma. No defects in the aircraft or faults in the parachute or ejection mechanism were found. Reconstruction of the shattered skull base and the cervical vertebrae revealed fusion of the atlanto-occipital joint (occipitalization) and a left paracondylar process. The effective diameter of the spinal canal was decreased by the abnormal ar…

CONTEXT: Pertussis is endemic worldwide, and exposure can occur anywhere, including commercial aircraft. Travelers exposed to an infectious person with pertussis may receive post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for up to 21 days after exposure to decrease risk of infection. This is accomplished through the identification of infectious travelers and their aircraft contacts (a process called aircraft contact investigation [Air CIs]).
OBJECTIVE: Describe travelers reported to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) who flew while infectious with pertussis and outcomes of associated Ai…

BACKGROUND: Aircrew-aircraft compatibility is important in military aviation for flight safety. Anthropometric aircrew selection standards in RAFO were embedded from the selection standards of western defense forces as the aircrafts were imported from there. Henceforth efforts were made to fit local native aviators into aircrafts not initially designed for them. In view of this, this study was carried out to obtain the anthropometric data of Oman aircrew recruits and compare these with published western and eastern data with a hope to understand and highlight the aircrew-aircraft mismatch issu…

Physicians who use aircraft to transport patients should be familiar with the general principles of altitude physiology, the basic characteristics of aircraft and the specific medical problems which are encountered in an aviation environment. Hypoxia, gas expansion and acceleration forces are common effects of air travel which must be anticipated and avoided in acutely ill patients. Provision of supplemental oxygen, use of decompressive tubes and proper positioning of the patient may obviate or minimize these problems.
