Discrepancy in patch test results with wool wax alcohols and Amerchol L-101.

Wondering why Amerchol L-101 (containing wool wax alcohols obtained from the hydrolysis of wool fat) appears as a test material (100%) in a cosmetics series (Chemotechnique Diagnostics AB), as wool wax alcohols were already tested in the European standard series, we added Amerchol L-101 (100%) systematically to the standard series. From 8 April 1991 to 28 February 1992, a total of 393 patients were tested: 3.05% (n = 12) showed positive test results (+, +2, +3) for wool wax alcohols as well as Amerchol L-101 (100%), 0.3% (n = 1) for wool wax alcohols only, and 11.1% (n = 44) for Amerchol L-101…

Effects of alcohols on murine preimplantation development: relationship to relative membrane disordering potency.

During in vitro culture of murine preimplantation embryos, we have observed that exposure to 0.1% ethanol induces an immediate increase in intracellular calcium levels and subsequently accelerates embryogenesis. If the observed effects of ethanol on developing embryos is mediated by its membrane disordering potency, we hypothesized that the relative membrane disordering potencies of related alcohols would correspondingly effect embryonic intracellular calcium levels and developmental rates. Two-cell embryos were exposed to 0.1% ethanol or 0.05 to 1.0% (w/v) n-butanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, …

Focal application of alcohols elevates extracellular dopamine in rat brain: a microdialysis study.

Dopaminergic systems are thought to play a major role in the stimulant and reinforcing properties of drugs of abuse, including ethanol. The present study describes the effects of local perfusion with ethanol (and other alcohols) on extracellular dopamine in the striatum and nucleus accumbens. Following the establishment of basal dopamine levels (2-3 h), various concentrations of ethanol in artificial CSF (0.01-10% v/v) were slowly perfused through a microdialysis probe. Each dose of ethanol was found to increase dopamine concentrations in both the striatum and nucleus accumbens. This increase …

Short chain alcohols activate guanine nucleotide-dependent phosphoinositidase C in turkey erythrocyte membranes.

The ability of alcohols to regulate inositol lipid-specific phospholipase C (phosphoinositidase C) was examined in turkey erythrocyte ghosts prepared by cell lysis of erythrocytes which were prelabeled with [3H] inositol. Guanosine 5'-[gamma-thiotriphosphate] GTP[S] stimulated the production of both [3H]inositol bisphosphate (18-fold) and [3H]inositol trisphosphate (6-fold) in this system. The accumulation of [3H]inositol bisphosphate and [3H]inositol trisphosphate was linear up to 8 min following an initial lag period of 1-2 min. Ethanol (300 mM) reduced the lag period for [3H]inositol phosph…

Effect of ethanol and other aliphatic alcohols on the intestinal transport of folates.

The effect of ethanol and other aliphatic alcohols on the intestinal transport of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate and folic acid was examined using everted sacs from rat jejunum. Ethanol added to the mucosal medium inhibited the transport of both folate compounds in a parallel manner, and the inhibition increased with increasing ethanol concentration (0.5-10% v/v). Ethanol at 3% v/v in the mucosal medium caused: depression in the pH dependency of the active transport of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate; higher inhibition in the transport of low concentration (0.1 microM) than high concentration (10 microM) o…

[Out of addictions: Alcohol, or alcohol to alcohol].

UNLABELLED: Pathways from alcoholism to recovery are documented; less often are those from drug addiction to alcoholism. Biographical approaches allow analyzing how people change their uses and talk about their trajectories of recovery. METHODS: Three hundred and forty-one people (34% women) in the Paris area were questioned on their trajectories with a biographical questionnaire. Some open questions were aimed to understand the connection they made between events in their lives, how recovered they felt and what they considered strengths or obstacles. All the participants had stopped at least

Lattice Oxygen Mediated C(OH)-C(OH) Bond Cleavage to Promote Alcohols Electrooxidation.

Selective cleavage of C(OH)-C(OH) bond is crucial for valorization of biomass, waste plastics and other organic compounds, while facing ther … strategy to unravel the contribution of active oxygen species for C(OH)-C(OH) bond cleavage during alcohols electrooxidation, revealing that lattice oxygen promotes C(OH)-C(OH) bond cleavage and enhances product selectivity. We constructed NiAl-LDH and Ni(Al)-LDH as model catalysts, the latter derived through a "nano-tailoring" Al-leaching strategy. As a …

Nickel-Catalyzed Deoxyvinylation of Benzyl Alcohols via Cross-Electrophile Coupling with Vinyl Bromides.

Transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling directly utilizing alcohols remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we report a synergistic strategy integrating in situ chlorination with reductive coupling to achieve the efficient synthesis of allylbenzenes from benzyl alcohols and vinyl bromides. The 2-chloro-3-ethylbenzo[d]oxazol-3-ium salt (CEBO)/TBACl system serves as a mild chlorinating agent, enabling the conversion of benzyl alcohols to benzyl chlorides in THF in less than 1 min. This activation step exhibits exquisite chemoselectivity and allows for the kinetic, quantitative transformation o…

A TMSOTf-catalyzed Michaelis-Arbuzov reaction of triorganyl phosphites with sterically bulky alcohols.

Although more advantageous in several aspects than the reaction of the corresponding halides, the catalytic Michaelis-Arbuzov (MA) reaction of sterically more bulky secondary and tertiary alcohols with triorganyl phosphites is still one of the most challenging tasks that has not been realized so far. Now we have developed a trimethylsilyl triflate (TMSOTf)-catalyzed efficient MA reaction of triorganyl phosphites that can directly employ sterically bulky alcohols as substrates. This new method can be applied to a wide range of primary to tertiary alcohols and also two P(III) esters (phosphonite…

Single-enzyme redox-neutral oxidation of alcohols to carboxylic acids using alcohol dehydrogenases.

Oxidation of primary alcohols to carboxylic acids is a fundamental reaction in organic chemistry, traditionally dependent on toxic oxidants and often limited by poor selectivity. In this study, we demonstrate the multifunctional capability of some alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs) to catalyze both alcohol and aldehyde oxidation while regenerating their NAD+ cofactor through concomitant reduction of acetone. Screening of a panel of ADHs revealed that the enzymes from Paracoccus pantotrophus (Pp-ADH) and Aromatoleum aromaticum (Aa-ADH) have strong overoxidation activity to carboxylic acids. The bioc…

Positronium Atoms Solvated in Liquid Alcohols: A Multicomponent Quantum Mechanics/Molecular Mechanics Approach.

Positronium (Ps) atoms are highly sensitive probes of condensed-phase structure and dynamics, yet their theoretical description in complex molecular environments remains challenging. We present an extension of our QM/MM protocol to investigate Ps in methanol and ethanol, building on our earlier study in water. Classical Monte Carlo simulations employing newly parametrized Ps-solvent force fields reveal well-defined cavity structures, whose sizes are consistent with hydrated Ps and systematically smaller than those predicted by empirical bubble models. Multicomponent quantum calculations employ

Challenging established norms: The unanticipated role of alcohols in UV/PDS radical quenching.

UV/peroxydisulfate (UV/PDS) process is known to be highly efficient for degrading micropollutants from water by generating sulfate (SO4•-) and hydroxyl radicals (HO•). Reliable analyses of short-lived SO4•- and HO• are therefore critical for understanding reaction mechanisms and optimizing operating conditions. Currently, alcohols are commonly used as quenchers to distinguish radicals based on the assumption that they exclusively react with target radicals without other influences. However, this study for the first time reveals a series of unexpected effects that challenge this conventional wi…

Quinoline-derived NNP-manganese complex catalyzed α-alkylation of ketones with primary alcohols.

An air-stable quinoline-derived NNP ligand chelated Mn catalyst was developed for the efficient α-alkylation of ketones with primary alcohols via a hydrogen auto-transfer methodology. The sole by-product formed is water, rendering the protocol atom efficient. A wide range of ketone and alcohol substrates were employed, providing the α-alkylated ketones with isolated yields up to 94%. This system was also efficient for the green synthesis of quinoline derivatives while using (2-aminophenyl)methanol as an alkylating reagent.

Dielectric Response of Different Alcohols in Water-Rich Binary Mixtures from THz Ellipsometry.

We report a study on the hydrogen bonding mechanisms of three aliphatic alcohols (2-propanol, methanol, and ethanol) and one diol (ethylene glycol) in water solution using a time-domain ellipsometer in the THz region. The dielectric response of the pure liquids is nicely modeled by the generalized Debye-Lorentz equation. For binary mixtures, we analyze the data using a modified effective Debye model, which considers H-bond rupture and reformation dynamics and the motion of the alkyl chains and of the OH groups. We focus on the properties of the water-rich region, finding anomalous behavior in …

Deoxygenative coupling of alcohols with aromatic nitriles enabled by direct visible light excitation.

A general and practical protocol is presented for visible-light-driven deoxygenative coupling of alcohols with aromatic nitriles in the absence of external photocatalysts. Utilizing a hydroxyl activation strategy with carbon disulfide, this C(sp3)-C(sp2) constructing platform accommodates a broad scope of alcohols and aryl nitriles to deliver various alkyl-substituted arenes. Mechanism studies show that a single electron transfer event between a photoexcited aryl nitrile and a xanthate anion is key to the transformation.

Biosynthesis of Chiral Amino Alcohols via an Engineered Amine Dehydrogenase in E. coli.

Chiral amino alcohols are prevalent synthons in pharmaceuticals and synthetic bioactive compounds. The efficient synthesis of chiral amino alcohols using ammonia as the sole amino donor under mild conditions is highly desired and challenging in organic chemistry and biotechnology. Our previous work explored a panel of engineered amine dehydrogenases (AmDHs) derived from amino acid dehydrogenase (AADH), enabling the one-step synthesis of chiral amino alcohols via the asymmetric reductive amination of α-hydroxy ketones. Although the AmDH-directed asymmetric reduction is in a high stereoselective…

Stereoselective Iridium-N,P-Catalyzed Double Hydrogenation of Conjugated Enones to Saturated Alcohols.

Asymmetric hydrogenation of prochiral substrates such as ketones and olefins constitutes an important instrument for the construction of stereogenic centers, and a multitude of catalytic systems have been developed for this purpose. However, due to the different nature of the π-system, the hydrogenation of olefins and ketones is normally catalyzed by different metal complexes. Herein, a study on the effect of additives on the Ir-N,P-catalyzed hydrogenation of enones is described. The combination of benzamide and the development of a reactive catalyst unlocked a novel reactivity mode of Crabtre

Redox-mediated C-C bond scission in alcohols adsorbed on CeO2-xthin films.

The decomposition mechanisms of ethanol and ethylene glycol on well-ordered stoichiometric CeO2(111) and partially reduced CeO2-x(111) films were investigated by means of synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy, resonant photoemission spectroscopy, and temperature programmed desorption. Both alcohols partially deprotonate upon adsorption at 150 K and subsequent annealing yielding stable ethoxy and ethylenedioxy species. The C-C bond scission in both ethoxy and ethylenedioxy species on stoichiometric CeO2(111) involves formation of acetaldehyde-like intermediates and yields CO and CO2a…
