Meralgia paresthetica has been described as a common affliction of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, creating the symptoms of numbness, tingling, and paresthesias in the overlying areas of the lateral and anterior thigh. It is second only to sciatica in peripheral nerve diseases of the lower extremity. We present two patients with classic symptoms of meralgia paresthetica and nonscarring alopecia overlying and demarcating the areas of paresthesias. Meralgia paresthetica should be included in the differential diagnosis of localized alopecia of the anterior or lateral thigh.

Congenital temporal triangular alopecia is a form of nonscarring alopecia that, as its name suggests, is present at birth. Four cases are reported. One patient underwent hair transplantation, which was successful and might be useful in other patients. Cases occurring in a father and his son suggest for the first time a genetic link.

Four of ten patients with alopecia areata (plaque and totalis types) showed some regrowth of hair after PUVA therapy using a light box with peak emission 365 nm. Because PUVA may have long term side effects, this therapy should be reserved for patients resistant to other treatments.

Congenital temporal triangular alopecia (CTTA) is a condition that occurs very rarely and is often unresponsive to treatment. It is necessary to differentiate it from other conditions such as alopecia areata in order to avoid prolonged treatment which may cause adverse side effects. Serum immunoglobulin levels (IgA, IgM, IgG) were measured by radial immunodiffusion in 57 subjects with varying degrees of alopecia areata. Both IgA and IgM fell with increasing severity of disease as judged by the area of scalp involved. IgM in subjects with extensive disease was significantly lower than that of an age- and sex-matched control group.
