Two promising palladium(II) compounds of general formula, cis-[Pd(L-O,S)2] [where HL-O,S = N-(di(butyl/phenyl)carbamothioyl)benzamide] as metal based antiamoebic drug candidates, have been synthesized. Both complexes are characterized in the solid state by FT-IR spectroscopy, TGA and single crystal X-ray study, as well as in solution by other spectroscopic techniques such as (1)H and (13)C NMR, and UV-visible. All these studies confirm the coordination of ligands through oxygen and sulphur atoms upon thioenolization induced delocalization. Complexes adopt cis-configuration in the solid state.

We have developed a reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography pulsed amperometric detection (RPHPLC-PAD) method for the determination of paromomycin. It is sensitive, repeatable, and selective without the pretreatment step. Trifluoroacetic acid-water was utilized as the eluent and detected by PAD under NaOH alkaline conditions. The paromomycin detection limit (S/N=3.3) was 2μgmL(-1) and the quantification limit (S/N=10) was 6μgmL(-1). A middle-aged female with an atrial septal defect (secundum type) presented with a primary pulmonary amoebic abscess. She was successfully treated with antiamoebic therapy. One year later she presented with a similar lung abscess which again responded to antiamboebic treatment. Attention is drawn to the fact that a patient with a left to right shunt can present with a recurrent rare primary parasitic infection of the lung.

A series of bisamidines of 2,6-diaminoanthraquinone was synthesized and tested against cecal and hepatic forms of Entamoeba histolytica infections in rats and hamsters, respectively. A number of compounds were found to have good activity against infections in both species.
