The structural connectivity of the recurrent transient global amnesia.

BACKGROUND: One of recent interesting hypotheses of transient global amnesia (TGA) pathophysiology is the preexisting vulnerability of the memory network in patients with TGA. AIM OF THE STUDY: To verify the hypothesis that patients with recurrent amnestic attacks may have more disrupted structural connectivity than patients of a single TGA event, we compared the brain imaging of patients with repeated episodes of TGA with those who experienced a single attack. METHODS: Seven patients who were having recurrent TGA and 14 age- and sex-matched control subjects who had only a single episode of

A SPECT study of the anatomy of transient global amnesia.

This report describes single photon emission tomography (SPECT) evidence of transient, relative hypoperfusion of the right basal ganglia and left temporal lobe in a 60-year-old man studied during the acute phase of classical transient global amnesia (TGA). The findings are interpreted in the light of previous reports indicating that involvement of the right hemisphere or both cerebral hemispheres consistently predicts severe retrograde amnesia, in addition to the typical loss of anterograde memory observed during TGA. These deficits involving the right hemisphere and left temporal lobe may ref

Scopolamine intoxication as a model of transient global amnesia.

In Colombia (South America) during recent decades the administration of scopolamine, extracted from plants belonging to the Datura or Brugmansia genus, has become an important neurologic and toxicologic phenomenon. These extracts have been popularly known as "Burundanga." Chemical characteristics and clinical features of scopolamine intoxication are described. Anterograde amnesia and submissive behavior found in patients intoxicated with scopolamine are analyzed. Burundanga intoxication is related to other toxic phenomena found in different countries and similitudes with transient global amnes

Transient global amnesia precipitated by emotion in an adolescent.

Transient global amnesia has been reported to be precipitated by intense emotion in adult patients. Transient global amnesia is uncommon in the pediatric age group. We report the unusual occurrence of this syndrome, apparently precipitated on two occasions by emotion, in an adolescent who had earlier in life suffered a left temporal and occipital lobe embolic infarction from congenital heart disease. Transient global amnesia following intense emotion may be a cause of some confusional states in children and adolescents.

Transient global amnesia and functional retrograde amnesia: contrasting examples of episodic memory loss.

We studied 11 patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) and ten patients with functional retrograde amnesia (FRA). Patients with TGA had a uniform clinical picture: a severe, relatively isolated amnesic syndrome that started suddenly, persisted for 4-12 h, and then gradually improved to essentially normal over the next 12-24 h. During the episode, the patients had severe anterograde amnesia for verbal and non-verbal material and retrograde amnesia that typically covered at least two decades. Thirty hours to 42 days after the episode, the patients had recovered completely and performed norma

[Amnestic episodes. (Isolated episodes of confusion with amnesia, amnesic ictus, transient global amnesia)].

The author, by giving an outline of one particular case as well as a survey of the relevant literature on transient global amnesia, describes the characteristic clinical picture that is characterized by a sudden loss of what is known as the short-time memory, which usually lasts for several hours, as well as by retrograde amnesia which sometimes dates back to many years. The condition gradually fades away within a few hours or during a night's sleep, and what remains is lack or loss of memory for the episodic period or sometimes retrograde amnesia. Relapses were not observed in the majority of

Glymphatic System Function in Patients with Transient Global Amnesia.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to examine glymphatic system function in patients with transient global amnesia (TGA), as well as to conduct a recurrence analysis. METHODS: We enrolled patients with TGA and healthy controls from our hospital retrospectively. The patients and healthy controls were all scanned with the same 3T scanner, which included diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). We investigated the function of the glymphatic system using DTI analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS). The ALPS index was compared between patients with TGA and healthy controls, as well as betwe

Transient global amnesia - hippocampal lesions in magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Transient global amnesia is a benign syndrome characterized by a sudden onset loss of anterograde amnesia with full recovery. Magnetic resonance of the brain including diffusion-weighted imaging of patients with transient global amnesia revealed the presence of punctate hyperintense signal abnormalities in the hippocampus. OBJECTIVE: Analysis of the presence of hippocampal lesions in brain magnetic resonance imaging in patients with transient global amnesia and the possible influence of additional factors on their appearance. METHODS: In this retrospective, an observational study

Frequency of silent brain infarction in transient global amnesia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To determine the frequency and distribution pattern of acute DWI lesions outside the hippocampus in patients clinically presenting with Transient Global Amnesia (TGA). METHODS: Consecutive patients clinically presenting with TGA between January 2010 and January 2017 admitted to our hospital were retrospectively evaluated. All patients fulfilled diagnostic criteria of TGA. We analyzed imaging and clinical data of all patients undergoing MRI with high-resolution diffusion-weighted imaging within 72 h from symptom onset. RESULTS: A total of 126 cases were included into t

Transient Global Amnesia: A Diffusion and Perfusion MRI study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a rare clinical entity with a sudden onset of anterograde amnesia that recovers within 24 hours. The underlying pathophysiology is uncertain. Imaging studies are controversial, but diffusion-weighted images often show small diffusion-restricted lesions in the hippocampus, which may suggest ischemic damage. Thus, we conducted the first clinical study using neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) and arterial spin labeling (ASL) to examine whether the microstructure and perfusion status of the hippocampus are influenced

Factors Associated With Risk of Recurrent Transient Global Amnesia.

IMPORTANCE: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is usually considered a benign event with a low recurrence rate. However, recurrence rates vary considerably among studies and there are no known risk factors for TGA. OBJECTIVE: To examine risk factors for the recurrence of TGA. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study involved medical record review of patients with isolated or recurrent TGA presenting to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, between August 1, 1992, and February 28, 2018. A total of 1491 cases were reviewed and 1044 met diagnostic inclusion criteria for

Highlighting the classical MRI findings in transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a disorder characterised by a temporary, reversible disruption of short-term memory. While the diagnosis of TGA is based on its clinical features, neuroimaging is important to exclude other sinister causes of global amnesia. Furthermore, classical MRI changes in TGA have been well described in the literature. These consist of unilateral or bilateral punctuate areas of hyperintensity in the hippocampal cornu ammonis 1 (CA1) region on diffusion-weighted imaging. We describe a case of a 61-year-old gentleman, presenting with symptoms of transient memory loss and

Clinics in diagnostic imaging (188). Transient global amnesia (TGA).

A 60-year-old woman was travelling on a plane with her spouse when she suddenly developed acute-onset disorientation to time and space. According to her husband, she repetitively questioned her whereabouts and complained of a minor headache. Upon landing, she was immediately brought to the emergency room and subsequent magnetic resonance imaging was performed, which showed multiple punctate 2-3 mm regions of diffusion-weighted imaging hyperintensity in the medial aspects of both temporal lobes. The conglomeration of clinical history and radiological findings was most suggestive of transient gl

Risk factors of transient global amnesia: Three case reports.

INTRODUCTION: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is characterized by a sudden onset of anterograde and retrograde amnesia, sometimes associated with mild subclinical neuropsychological deficits and vegetative symptoms, lasting for days after the episode. Migraine history, cardiovascular risk factors, and emotional stress are considered possible risk factors. TGA usually occurs during the seventh decade of life, that is, when risk factors and concomitant pathologies have a higher incidence. CASE PRESENTATION: We report 3 cases of TGA triggered by different causes (cardiovascular risk factors, emot
