ChatGPT-4.0 and Medical Students: A Recognition-Gated Comparative Evaluation on Image-Based Medical Examinations.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models like vision-capable ChatGPT 4.0, is increasingly shaping medical education. While these systems show promise for automated feedback and adaptive assessments, their performance in visually intensive, image-based disciplines remains insufficiently studied. OBJECTIVE: This cohort study aims to compare the performance of ChatGPT 4.0 and undergraduate medical students on standardized, image-based multiple-choice questions in Anatomy, Pathology, and Pediatrics. Standardized exams were administered to second-, third-, and f

Underground Down Under: Skull anatomy of the southern blind snake Anilios australis Gray, 1845 (Typhlopidae: Serpentes: Squamata).

The cranial anatomy of blindsnakes has been markedly understudied, with the small size and relative rarity of encountering these subterranean reptiles being significant limiting factors. In this article, we re-visit the skull anatomy of the Australian southern blind snake Anilios australis Gray, 1845 using microCT data, and produce the first complete atlas for the cranial anatomy of a representative of this speciose typhlopid genus. The skull is formed by 18 paired and four unpaired elements. We here produce a bone-by-bone description of each element as well as an inner ear endocast for each o

Balloon-Expandable Versus Self-Expandable Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation Devices: A Contemporary Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is an established treatment for severe aortic stenosis. Prosthesis selection is increasingly important because balloon-expandable valves (BEVs) and self-expandable valves (SEVs) differ in deployment, hemodynamics, and lifetime-management implications. This systematic review synthesized contemporary evidence comparing BEVs and SEVs, while platform-, generation-, and subgroup-specific studies provided contextual evidence. Methods: A PubMed-only systematic search was performed on 25 January 2026 for studies published between 1

Three-dimensional images of the temporal bone and experimental otitis media in Japanese monkeys.

Since the middle ear structure of animals commonly used for experimental study is different from that of humans, we used the Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscatus) as an animal model for otitis media with effusion (OME). The exact similarities and differences of the ear structure between humans and Japanese monkeys were studied by the use of computer-aided three-dimensional reconstruction, in addition to light and electron microscopy. Otitis media with effusion was repeatedly induced by direct intratympanic inoculation of one of the following: keyhole limpet hemocyanin; following systemic immunizat

The Internal Cranial Anatomy of a Female With Endocrine Disorders From a Mediaeval Population.

Gigantism and acromegaly have been observed in past populations; however, analyses usually focus on the morphological features of the post-cranial skeleton. The aim of this study is to characterize the internal anatomical features of the skull (brain endocast anatomy and asymmetry, frontal pneumatization, cranial thickness, sella turcica size) of an adult individual from the 11-14th centuries with these two diseases, in comparison with non-pathological individuals from the same population. The material consisted of 33 adult skulls from a mediaeval population, one of them belonging to an adult

Horse anatomy and art: Carlo Ruini.

Carlo Ruini's Dell'Anotomia et dell'infirmità del cavallo (1598) is widely regarded as the first scientific treatise on veterinary anatomy. This paper reviews the historical circumstances of its composition and printing history, the structure and scientific content of its five anatomical books, the long-standing controversy over Ruini's authorship - including the plagiarisms it subsequently suffered - and the disputed attribution of its woodcut illustrations to artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Titian and Agostino Carracci. Ruini's description of the pulmonary circulation is situated within a

Chondrogenesis and homology of the visceral skeleton in the little skate, Leucoraja erinacea (Chondrichthyes: Batoidea).

Chondrichthyan fishes possess visceral skeletons that differ considerably, morphologically, from those of their sister taxon, the osteichthyans. Here, we use histological techniques and whole-mount skeletal preparations to visualize and describe the sequence of visceral skeletal condensation and chondrogenesis in a chondrichthyan, the little skate (Leucoraja erinacea). We demonstrate that visceral skeletal condensation begins rostrally, with the mandibular arch, and progresses caudally with the hyoid arch and posterior branchial arches condensing soon after. We provide a detailed account of th

Do medical students recognize Terminologia Anatomica terms more accurately than eponyms? A randomized comparative assessment study.

Despite longstanding debate over the use of Latin/Terminologia Anatomica (TA) and eponymous nomenclature in anatomy education, direct comparative evidence on students' recognition of these terminologies within the same curricular context remains limited. This study compared recognition of TA and eponymous terminology in second-year medical students using a multiple-choice anatomy test. In this single-center, randomized, parallel-group comparative assessment study, students at Ankara Medipol University Faculty of Medicine (N = 216) were assigned by stratified block randomization to receive eith

A consideration of the systemic factors that influence frontal sinus pneumatization.

The authors present the embryology and comparative anatomy of the frontal sinuses pertinent to a discussion of the systemic factors which influence frontal sinus pneumatization. There are at least three important factors involved: 1) craniofacial configuration, 2) thickness of the frontal bone, 3) growth hormones. Various clinical entities which illustrate these points are discussed.

Felix Vicq d'Azyr: anatomy, medicine and revolution.

Félix Vicq d'Azyr was born in 1748 in the small town of Valognes, Normandy. He studied medicine in Paris but he was particularly impressed by the lectures given at the Jardin du Roi by the comparative anatomist Louis Daubenton and the surgeon Antoine Petit. In 1773, Vicq d'Azyr initiated a series of successful lectures on human and animal anatomy at the Paris Medical School, from which he received his medical degree in 1774. He was elected the same year at the Academy of Sciences at age 26, thanks to his outstanding contributions to comparative anatomy. Vicq d'Azyr became widely known after hi

Thoracic Branched Endografts in Acute Aortic Syndromes: Expanding Indications, but at What Cost?

Clinical ImpactOff-the-shelf thoracic branched endografts may facilitate urgent zone 2 TEVAR while preserving left subclavian artery perfusion and avoiding cervical debranching. However, acute aortic pathology increases the hazards of arch manipulation. Current evidence supports selective use in suitable anatomy and experienced centres, rather than routine adoption, until larger comparative studies better define safety and clinical benefit.

[Results of studying of the pathomorphism of pulmonary tuberculosis in Iakutiia].

The paper summarizes the results of studies into the pathological anatomy and pathomorphism of pulmonary tuberculosis in Yakutia, which have been conducted by the Department of Anatomy, Yakutsk State University Medical Institute, over 36 years. A morphological comparative analysis of autopsies of individuals who died from different forms in the pre-antibacterial and antibacterial periods and surgical materials were used as a major source of data. More than 1,000 autopsies made it possible to define a wide range of behavioral patterns and the morphological features of pulmonary tuberculosis und

Covariation between midline cranial base, lateral basicranium, and face in modern humans and chimpanzees: a 3D geometric morphometric analysis.

Previous studies showed that in modern humans the basicranium is formed of two modules: the midline cranial base and the lateral basicranium which are integrated with the face in very different ways. The study of the relationship between these structures is of prime interest in the context of hominids craniofacial evolutionary history. In this study, we aim to test if the relationship between the midline cranial base and the face on one hand and the lateral basicranium and the face on the other hand are qualitatively and quantitatively different in modern humans and chimpanzees: two phylogenet

The legendary contributions of Thomas Willis (1621-1675): the arterial circle and beyond.

Thomas Willis established neurology as a distinct discipline and made significant original contributions to many related fields including anatomy, pathology, cardiology, endocrinology, and gastroenterology. He is most remembered for his work in elucidating the function and anatomy of the circle of Willis. Willis' accomplishments and research methods can be credited in large part to his unconventional medical education which did not include traditional teachings, but rather emphasized learning through clinical practice. Although Willis was not the first to describe the arterial circle, he was t

Functional anatomy, jaw mechanisms, and feeding behavior of Dunkleosteus terrelli (Placodermi, Arthrodira).

The comparative and functional anatomy of the cleaver-like jaws of the Late Devonian arthrodire Dunkleosteus terrelli remains poorly understood, despite significant advances in our understanding of arthrodire anatomy. Here, we re-investigate the jaw morphology of D. terrelli from a comparative anatomical perspective. Rare cartilaginous elements, preserved attachment sites, and comparisons with other arthrodires suggest the skull of Dunkleosteus contained significantly more cartilage than previously assumed, with many major jaw muscle attachments and cranial articulations located on cartilages.

CTD Anatomy: analyzing chemical-induced phenotypes and exposures from an anatomical perspective, with implications for environmental health studies.

The Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD) is a freely available public resource that curates and interrelates chemical, gene/protein, phenotype, disease, organism, and exposure data. CTD can be used to address toxicological mechanisms for environmental chemicals and facilitate the generation of testable hypotheses about how exposures affect human health. At CTD, manually curated interactions for chemical-induced phenotypes are enhanced with anatomy terms (tissues, fluids, and cell types) to describe the physiological system of the reported event. These same anatomy terms are used to annota

[Aplasia of the gallbladder (author's transl)].

In the clinical observation of a female patient with typical gallstone symptoms and corresponding diagnostic findings when gallstones and gallbladder were absent, further diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in gallbladder aplasia, a very rare anomaly of biliary tract anatomy, could be facilitated with the aid of comparative echography and computer tomography. Diagnostic and therapeutic failure appear to be avoidable by this means.

Anatomy, digital radiography and cone-beam computed tomography of Western European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) skull.

BACKGROUND: European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) are small insectivorous mammals common in Europe. With increased urbanization, the species become more frequent in the cities and near other human dwellings. The anatomy of the species with the use of diagnostic imaging techniques along with the classical anatomical methodology has not been researched before. In addition to the description of this species' skull, the data may contribute to progress in hedgehog medicine, delivering a basis for diagnosing and treating head trauma in this species. RESULTS: Cadavers of 30 European hedgehogs hav

The anatomy of the human frontal lobe.

Throughout evolution the frontal lobes have progressively acquired a central role in most aspects of cognition and behavior. In humans, frontal lobe functions are conditional on the development of an intricate set of short- and long-range connections that guarantee direct access to sensory information and control over regions dedicated to planning and motor execution. Here the frontal cortical anatomy and the major connections that constitute the local and extended frontal connectivity are reviewed in the context of diffusion tractography studies, contemporary models of frontal lobe functions,
