BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a significant global health problem affecting close to 2 billion people worldwide. The prevalence of IDA is higher among children younger than five years and women of reproductive age, indicating an intergenerational correlation between maternal and child anemia. This study aims to analyze the association between maternal and child anemia in The Gambia.
METHODS: A nationally representative dataset comprising 3249 children under the age of five, obtained from The Gambia Demographic and Health Survey (2019-2020), was utilized for empirical analyses. M…

This study reports the challenges of rheumatic mitral and tricuspid valve re-repair on a child presenting with gross hematuria, hemolysis, and volume overload. Severe postoperative mitral and tricuspid valve regurgitation was the cause, and redo surgery for both valves resolved the acute issues.

Inherited microcytic anemias can be broadly classified into 3 subgroups: (1) defects in globin chains (hemoglobinopathies or thalassemias), (2) defects in heme synthesis, and (3) defects in iron availability or iron acquisition by the erythroid precursors. These conditions are characterized by a decreased availability of hemoglobin (Hb) components (globins, iron, and heme) that in turn causes a reduced Hb content in red cell precursors with subsequent delayed erythroid differentiation. Iron metabolism alterations remain central to the diagnosis of microcytic anemia, and, in general, the iron s…

Most anemia is related to the digestive system by dietary deficiency, malabsorption, or chronic bleeding. We review the World Health Organization definition of anemia, its morphological classification (microcytic, macrocytic and normocytic) and pathogenic classification (regenerative and hypo regenerative), and integration of these classifications. Interpretation of laboratory tests is included, from the simplest (blood count, routine biochemistry) to the more specific (iron metabolism, vitamin B12, folic acid, reticulocytes, erythropoietin, bone marrow examination and Schilling test). In the …

Nutritional anemias are important because they are easily reversed and because their underlying causes, most often unrelated to dietary intake, require individualized assessment. Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) usually results from iron losses accompanying chronic bleeding, including loss to intestinal parasites, or from gastric disorders or malabsorption in the elderly. Cobalamin-deficiency anemia, the only nutritional anemia with predilection for the elderly, nearly always stems from failure of intrinsic factor (IF)-related absorption. Folate-deficiency anemia, the only nutritional anemia usual…

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia in adults is most frequently due to chronic blood loss. When the clinical course is complicated by sudden, severe declines in Hb concentration, the cause, nature, and lo- cation of bleeding may require an extensive clinical evaluation.
CASE REPORT: A 39-year-old woman was admitted for management of refractory hypoparathyroidism related to total thyroidectomy for Graves' disease. Two weeks before admission, her Hb level was 7.0 g per dL. Despite transfusion with four units of RBCs during this interval, her admission Hb level was 5.7 g per dL. There was no evi…

We describe the four most common groups of neonatal anemia and their treatments, with particular emphasis on erythropoietin therapy. The hemolytic anemias include the ABO incompatibility (much more frequent, nowadays, than the Rh incompatibility, which has nearly disappeared following the use of anti-D immunoglobulin in postpartum Rh-negative mothers), hereditary spherocytosis and G-6-PD deficiency. Among hypoplastic anemias, that caused by Parvovirus B19 predominates, by far, over Diamond-Blackfan anemia, alpha-thalassemia and the rare sideroblastic anemias. "Hemorrhagic" anemias occur during…

Recombinant erythropoietin (r-HuEPO) was the first growth factor introduced into clinical practice. The main indication for its therapeutic use remains treatment of anaemias during chronic renal failure. In Czech Republic it is at present administered to 55% of patients included in a regular haemodialyzation program and in the pre-dialyzation stage of the disease, consistent with European practice. In addition to a marked improvement of the quality of life, during r-HuEPO treatment also the prevalence of some cardiovascular complications is reduced and immune functions improve. The list of dis

Anemia in the 1st year of life should be an important warning sign to the clinician of a potential underlying nutritional deficiency. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are warranted in many cases, not only to treat the anemia but also, more important, to prevent other long-term sequelae associated with the underlying, causative deficiency. As more information about the impact of nutrition on various aspects of health is collected and newer therapies for the treatment of disease are developed, it will be important to understand and consider the role of vitamins and minerals in a light beyond the r…

From 1974 to 1984, the authors reviewed the clinical records of 20 elderly patients (10 male) at the Clinics Hospital of the School of Medicine of the University of São Paulo, who were admitted with megaloblastic anemia. Ages varied from 62 to 84 (mean 70.4 years). Clinical conditions was varied and usually severe, major systems affected being the hematologic, cardiocirculatory, neurologic, and digestive. Among hematological findings the most common were anemia with elevated cell volume, high neutrophil segmentation rate, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia and hemolysis. Pathological findings were p…

Anatomical observations have indicated a decrease of marrow cellularity with age, but these changes are not associated with anemia in the healthy geriatric patient. Aged patients with refractory anemia should be studied by utilizing red cell volume (MCV) and red cell heterogeneity (RDW). A classification with these indices initially can separate the anemias for a more fruitful investigation. By old age the anemias of hereditary red cell membrane or hemoglobin disorders should be known to the patient. In the absence of tumor, elderly patients have an increasing frequency of refractory anemias t…
