Establishing the link between microbial communities in bovine liver abscesses and the gastrointestinal tract.

BACKGROUND: Liver abscesses (LAs) are one of the most common and important problems faced by the beef industry. The most efficacious method for the prevention of LAs in North America is through dietary inclusion of low doses of antimicrobial drugs such as tylosin, but the mechanisms by which this treatment prevents LAs are not fully understood. LAs are believed to result from mucosal barrier dysfunction in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) allowing bacterial translocation to the liver via the portal vein, yet differences in the GIT microbiome of cattle with and without LAs have not been explore

Clinical and imaging features with longitudinal follow-up in a guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) with ventricular septal defect.

Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a rare and sparsely reported congenital heart disease in guinea pigs that arises from embryonic maldevelopment or misalignment of the interventricular septum, leading to an interventricular communication. A 2.5-year-old intact male guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) that weighed 0.713 kg was presented for a fractured right mandibular incisor, and an incidental grade V/VI right parasternal systolic murmur was detected in the absence of clinical signs of cardiac disease. Radiographic imaging revealed an enlarged cardiac silhouette in the ventrodorsal thoracic radiogr

Wireless, battery-free, remote photoactivation of caged-morphine for photopharmacological pain modulation without side effects.

Chronic pain severely impairs physical, psychological, and cognitive functions. While opioid-based therapies can be effective, they are limited by tolerance, dependence, and adverse side effects, highlighting the need for safer alternatives. Recent advances in photopharmacology allow precise modulation of pain-related neuronal circuits, offering improved control and effectiveness. For delivery of light, fully implantable, wireless, battery-free optical systems in miniaturized forms offer attractive options relative to alternatives that use conventional bulk hardware and fiber optic tethers. Imitative and contagious behaviors in animals and their potential roles in the study of neurodevelopmental disorders.

Social learning in the forms of imitative and contagious behaviors are essential for learning abilities and social interaction. However, children with neurodevelopmental disorders and intellectual disabilities show impairments in these behaviors, which profoundly affect their communication skills and cognitive functions. Although these deficits are well studied in humans, pre-clinical animal model assessments of imitative and contagious behavioral deficits are limited. Here, we first define various forms of social learning as well as their developmental and evolutionary significance in humans.

Early insight into the potential contribution of aluminum to neurodegeneration - A tribute to the research work of Robert D. Terry, Igor Klatzo, Henryk M. Wisniewski and Donald R.C. Mclachlan.

The first successful attempt to obtain purified aluminum metal was accomplished by the Danish physicist and chemist Hans Christian Orsted in 1824, however it was not until about ~140 years later that aluminum's capacity for neurological disruption and neurotoxicity was convincingly established. The earliest evidence of the possible involvement of this biosphere-rich metallotoxin in Alzheimer's disease (AD) originated in the early-to-mid-1960's from animal and human research investigations that arose almost simultaneously from independent laboratories in the United States and Canada. This short

Studies on prostanoid receptors in ocular tissues.

Cyclooxygenase products of arachidonic acid, for example prostaglandins (PGs), prostacyclin, and thromboxane A2, mediate a wide range of physiological actions. Vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, platelet aggregation and its inhibition, and immunomodulation are some of the important biological actions of cyclooxygenase products (1). Depending on type and dose, PGs cause vasodilation, increase or decrease intraocular pressure, and disrupt the blood-aqueous barrier (2, 3). These actions also vary qualitatively and quantitatively with the animal species. Prostaglandins, like any biolog

Attributable sources of community-acquired carriage of Escherichia coli containing β-lactam antibiotic resistance genes: a population-based modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-EC), plasmid-mediated AmpC-producing E coli (pAmpC-EC), and other bacteria are resistant to important β-lactam antibiotics. ESBL-EC and pAmpC-EC are increasingly reported in animals, food, the environment, and community-acquired and health-care-associated human infections. These infections are usually preceded by asymptomatic carriage, for which attributions to animal, food, environmental, and human sources remain unquantified. METHODS: In this population-based modelling study, we collected ESBL and pAmpC gene data on

A broad filter between call frequency and peripheral auditory sensitivity in northern grasshopper mice (Onychomys leucogaster).

Acoustic communication is a fundamental component of mate and competitor recognition in a variety of taxa and requires animals to detect and differentiate among acoustic stimuli (Bradbury and Vehrencamp in Principles of animal communication, 2nd edn., Sinauer Associates, Sunderland, 2011). The matched filter hypothesis predicts a correspondence between peripheral auditory tuning of receivers and properties of species-specific acoustic signals, but few studies have assessed this relationship in rodents. We recorded vocalizations and measured auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) in northern grass

Neurotransmitter modulation by the gut microbiota.

The gut microbiota - the trillions of bacteria that reside within the gastrointestinal tract - has been found to not only be an essential component immune and metabolic health, but also seems to influence development and diseases of the enteric and central nervous system, including motility disorders, behavioral disorders, neurodegenerative disease, cerebrovascular accidents, and neuroimmune-mediated disorders. By leveraging animal models, several different pathways of communication have been identified along the "gut-brain-axis" including those driven by the immune system, the vagus nerve, or

Evaluation of medical and veterinary students' attitudes toward a one health interprofessional curricular exercise.

This study evaluates whether medical and veterinary students' attitudes toward "One Health" and interprofessional education changed after participating in a joint small group learning exercise focused on risk factors associated with zoonotic disease. A survey was distributed to third-year medical students (n = 98) and second-year veterinary students (n = 140), each with a 95% response rate. Overall, 92% of veterinary students and 73% of medical students agreed or strongly agreed that "One Health" was relevant to their desired specialty. Students from both schools largely agreed that interprofe

The toxic shock syndrome exotoxin structural gene is not detectably transmitted by a prophage.

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a complex of generalized symptoms caused by a local staphylococcal infection, and a circulating toxin is thought to be involved. Indeed, nearly 100% of TSS isolates produce an exoprotein, TSSE, that is thought to have an aetiological role on the basis of positive animal tests (refs 1,2 and F. Quimby, personal communication) and human serological data. Although the precise role of TSSE in TSS remains unclear (E. Kass, personal communication), no other staphylococcal factor has been implicated. Our preliminary studies of the genetics of TSSE production failed to dem

Perinatal Biology Symposium: Perinatal Programming - Challenges and Solutions for Optimizing Long-Term Health.

Perinatal biology encompasses the coordinated sequence of parental, placental, fetal, and neonatal processes that collectively determine reproductive success and form the basis for lifelong health of the offspring. Recent advances in molecular biology, reproductive technologies, and systems biology have transformed our understanding of how events occurring before conception and throughout gestation influence pregnancy outcomes across mammalian species. The invited reviews that comprise this Perinatal Biology collection highlight emerging concepts in assisted reproductive technologies, maternal

Synaptic Reshaping and Neuronal Outcomes in the Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is one of the most common types of focal epilepsy, characterized by recurrent spontaneous seizures originating in the temporal lobe(s), with mesial TLE (mTLE) as the worst form of TLE, often associated with hippocampal sclerosis. Abnormal epileptiform discharges are the result, among others, of altered cell-to-cell communication in both chemical and electrical transmissions. Current knowledge about the neurobiology of TLE in human patients emerges from pathological studies of biopsy specimens isolated from the epileptogenic zone or, in a few more recent investigati

Undiagnosed Cases of Human Pneumonia Following Exposure to Chlamydia psittaci from an Infected Rosella Parrot.

This report describes two cases of occupational exposure to Chlamydia psittaci following dissection of an infected Rosella (Platycercus elegans). The C. psittaci infections (with one of them resulting in diagnosed pneumonia and hospitalisation) were undiagnosed during routine medical investigations but later established due to epidemiological and clinical evidence, and molecular testing of the archived Rosella' specimens. This case report stresses the importance of correct application and interpretation of diagnostic tests and the need to raise awareness about this zoonotic pathogen among medi

Pulmonary arterial hypertension: challenges in translational research and a vision for change.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a vascular remodeling disease with a relentless course toward heart failure and early death. Existing PAH therapies, all of which were developed originally to treat systemic vascular diseases, cannot reverse the disease or markedly improve survival and are expensive. Although there has been a recent increase in the number of potential new therapies emerging from animal studies, less than 3% of the active PAH clinical trials are examining such therapies. There are many potential explanations for the translational gap in this complex multifactorial diseas

Alterations of neocortical development and maturation in autism: insight from valproic acid exposure and animal models of autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a behaviourally defined brain disorder affecting approximately 1 in 88 children. Many pathological studies have shown that ASD is frequently associated with grey and white matter changes that can be described by their deviations from the normal trajectory of cortical maturation. For example, during the early (i.e. <2 years) postnatal period there is marked and selective tissue overgrowth in the higher-order temporal and frontal networks involved in emotional, social, and communication functions. In this focused review we first summarize some basic principles o

Blood Sampling Techniques for Wild Native Chilean Rodents.

Blood sampling is a critical component of wildlife research, particularly in studies of wildlife diseases. However, limited information exists on venipuncture sites for Chilean wild rodent species, such as the olive-colored akodont (Abrothrix olivaceus), Darwin's pericote (Phyllotis darwini), and degu (Octodon degus). Here, we describe field-tested venipuncture sites that allowed the collection of measurable blood volumes suitable for molecular detection of Trypanosoma cruzi in these species, based on fieldwork conducted in Chile's semiarid Mediterranean ecosystem. We provide anatomical illust

Role of microbes in the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric disorders.

Microbes inhabit different anatomical sites of the human body including oral cavity, gut, and skin. A growing literature highlights how microbiome variation is associated with human health and disease. There is strong evidence of bidirectional communication between gut and brain mediated by neurotransmitters and microbial metabolites. Here, we review the potential involvement of microbes residing in the gut and in other body sites in the pathogenesis of eight neuropsychiatric disorders, discussing findings from animal and human studies. The data reported provide a comprehensive overview of the

Animal type outweighs growth stage in shaping the active antibiotic resistome in livestock manure.

Animal manure is a major reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), yet the factors governing their composition and activity remain insufficiently understood. In this study, metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and quantitative PCR (qPCR) were integrated to characterize microbial communities and resistome profiles in manure from five animal types across multiple growth stages. Results demonstrated that animal type was the dominant factor shaping both microbial community structure and ARG composition at DNA and RNA levels, whereas growth stage did not significantly influence overall communi
