Ultrasound-Targeted Microbubble Destruction for Cardiac Gene Delivery.

Ultrasound targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD) is a novel technique that is used to deliver a gene or other bioactive substance to organs of living animals in a noninvasive manner. Plasmid DNA binding with cationic liposome into nanoparticles are assembled into the shell of microbubbles, which are circulated by intravenous injection. Intermittent bursts of ultrasound with low frequency and high mechanical index destroys the microbubbles and releases the nanoparticles into targeted organ to transfect local organ cells. Cell-specific promoters can be used to further enhance cell specificity.

Multi-compartment microscopic diffusion imaging.

This paper introduces a multi-compartment model for microscopic diffusion anisotropy imaging. The aim is to estimate microscopic features specific to the intra- and extra-neurite compartments in nervous tissue unconfounded by the effects of fibre crossings and orientation dispersion, which are ubiquitous in the brain. The proposed MRI method is based on the Spherical Mean Technique (SMT), which factors out the neurite orientation distribution and thus provides direct estimates of the microscopic tissue structure. This technique can be immediately used in the clinic for the assessment of variou

Dynamic HA/D-mannose dual-ligand nanomedicine reprograms macrophage-epithelial crosstalk for precision therapy of colitis.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by complex spatiotemporal heterogeneity, which poses significant challenges for effective treatment. Herein, we constructed DS-HDLTQs, a core-shell nanodelivery platform with dynamic dual-targeting capabilities. This platform utilizes hyaluronic acid (HA) and D-mannose (D-Man) to target acute inflammation and promote repair. It also features a dopamine-alginate (DA-SA, or DS) shell to achieve pH-responsive release specifically at colonic lesions. In animal experiments, DS-HDLTQs achieved 83.3% mucosal healing in just 7 days, significantly outperforming

Multifunctional CuS-CDs@MnO2 nanoparticles and liposome-assisted amplification for triple-mode detection of enrofloxacin.

The residues of enrofloxacin (ENR) in animal-derived food and water environments have emerged as a growing public health concern in recent years. Herein, a tri-mode biosensor was designed by employing CuS-CDs@MnO2 as the signal probe and glutathione (GSH)-loaded liposomes for amplification. The manganese dioxide (MnO2) shell of the nanocomposite quenched the fluorescence of CuS-CDs, reduced its photothermal performance and also endowed it with oxidase-like activity. In the presence of ENR, a large amount of GSH was released after aptamer recognition and magnetic separation. Then, the shell of

Age, fertility and reproductive behavior in cuban crocodiles, Crocodylus rhombifer, at the Smithsonian's National Zoological Park.

The Smithsonian's National Zoological Park (NZP) has a long history with Cuban crocodiles, Crocodylus rhombifer, beginning in 1900's when the first animals arrived at the NZP. Today, the Zoo has two breeding groups of C. rhombifer and has observed and analyzed reproductive behavior and fertility rates over the last three years. Fertility rates were determined initially by observing the formation of an opaque band that forms on the shell of a fertile egg, called banding. The fertility rates by banding were later compared to the observation made after opening the eggs to verify fertility. In add

Fabrication of a core-shell nanofibrous wound dressing with an antioxidant effect on skin injury.

Oxidative stress is one of the obstacles preventing wound regeneration, especially for chronic wounds. Herein, designing a wound dressing with an anti-oxidant function holds great appeal for enhancing wound regeneration. In this study, a biocompatible and degradable nanofiber with a core-shell structure was fabricated via coaxial electrospinning, in which polycaprolactone (PCL) was applied as the core structure, while the shell was composed of a mixture of silk fibroin (SF) and tocopherol acetate (TA). The electrospun PST nanofibers were proven to have a network structure with significantly en

3D printing of drug-loaded multi-shell rods for local delivery of bevacizumab and dexamethasone: A synergetic therapy for retinal vascular diseases.

The clinical therapy for retinal vascular diseases requires repeated intravitreal injections of drugs owing to their short half-life, which imposes health and economic burdens on patients. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an advanced drug delivery system that can prolong the drug activity and minimize secondary complications. In this study, we developed a core/shell drug-loaded rod (drug rod) to deliver two types of drugs (bevacizumab (BEV) and dexamethasone (DEX)) from a single implant. The coaxial printing technique allowed BEV and DEX to be released with different kinetics at the same

Electroacupuncture suppresses discrete cue-evoked heroin-seeking and fos protein expression in the nucleus accumbens core in rats.

Relapse to drug seeking was studied using a rodent model of reinstatement induced by exposure to drug-related cues. Here, we used intravenous drug self-administration procedures in rats to further investigate the beneficial effects of electroacupuncture (EA) on heroin-seeking behavior in a reinstatement model of relapse. We trained Sprague-Dawley rats to nose-poke for i.v. heroin either daily for 4 h or 25 infusions for 14 consecutive days. Then the rats were abstinent from heroin for two weeks. 2 Hz EA stimulation was conducted once daily for 14 days during heroin abstinence. We tested these

Porosity of eggshells from wild and captive, pen-reared alligators (Alligator mississippiensis).

Artificially incubated fertile eggs from wild alligators have a significantly better hatch rate than those of captive, pen-reared alligators, possibly due to differences in the morphology of the eggshells. We compared the morphology of eggshells of wild alligators to those of captive alligators living in semi-natural environmental pens. Lengths and widths of eggs were measured and volume was determined, assuming an ellipsoid shape. Eggs were also evaluated for the quality of the eggshell (the presence or absence of rough deposits). Pieces of shell were cut from unincubated eggs and from eggs i

Welfare and performance in layers following temporary exclusion from the litter area on introduction to the layer facility.

When introduced to the laying facility, pullets are sometimes temporarily excluded from the litter area in order to help them locate food and water, and to prevent floor-laid eggs. This procedure is not permitted in Sweden, because it involves denying access to both litter and space, which may have a negative effect on bird welfare. The present study investigated how the welfare and performance of layers were affected by this temporary exclusion on introduction of hens to the laying facility. The study included 600 floor-reared Dekalb White layers obtained at 16 wk age and housed in 6 groups o

Is lactase the receptor and uncoating enzyme for infantile enteritis (rota) viruses?

Rotaviruses are now regarded as important causes of diarrhoea in man, cattle, pigs, mice, and possibly other animals. Characteristically, disease occurs in newborn and young animals, and infection seems limited to the differentiated gut epithelial cells. The major surface polypeptide of the calf scours rotavirus is glycosylated, and highly purified beta-galactosidase (lactase) interacts with the virus in vitro causing removal of the outer shell of the capsid (uncoating). It is suggested that lactase present in the brush border of the intestinal epithelial cell performs a similar function in vi

Behavioural Responses of Unio tumidus Freshwater Mussels to Pesticide Contamination.

A pesticide is a chemical substance used for the disposal of pests, such as insects, weeds, invertebrates, or rodents. Pesticides interfere with the normal metabolism of the target species; however, some of them may inadvertently affect organisms other than those targeted. Increased quantities of pesticides in water disturb various ecological processes and may increase the mortality rate of various native species of flora and fauna. One of the groups of organisms that are at the greatest risk from the adverse effects of pesticides is the bivalves. This study was designed to assess the behaviou

Between shells and seas: Effects of ocean acidification on calcification and osmoregulation in yellow clam (Amarilladesma mactroides).

The decline in ocean pH due to rising CO2 levels is a critical factor impacting marine ecosystems. Ocean acidification (OA) is expected to negatively affect various organisms, particularly those with mineralized structures. While the effects of OA on the calcification of shells and exoskeletons are documented, the impact on homeostatic processes, such as osmoregulation, is less understood. Osmoregulation is vital for maintaining water and salt balance within marine organisms, crucial for their survival and physiological functions. Acidification may alter ion exchange mechanisms, affecting the

Tracing key genes associated with the Pinctada margaritifera albino phenotype from juvenile to cultured pearl harvest stages using multiple whole transcriptome sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Albino mutations are commonly observed in the animal kingdom, including in bivalves. In the black-lipped pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera, albino specimens are characterized by total or partial absence of colouration resulting in typical white shell phenotype expression. The relationship of shell colour with resulting cultured pearl colour is of great economic interest in P. margaritifera, on which a pearl industry is based. Hence, the albino phenotype provides a useful way to examine the molecular mechanisms underlying pigmentation. RESULTS: Whole transcriptome RNA-sequencing

Organic trace minerals improve eggshell quality by improving the eggshell ultrastructure of laying hens during the late laying period.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of low inclusion levels of organic trace minerals (iron, copper, manganese, and zinc) on performance, eggshell quality, serum hormone levels, and enzyme activities of laying hens during the late laying period. A total of 405 healthy hens (HY-Line White, 50-week-old) were randomly divided into 3 treatments, with 9 replications per treatment and 15 birds per replication. The dietary treatments included a basal diet supplemented with inorganic trace minerals at commercial levels (CON), a basal diet supplemented with inorganic trace minera

Efficacy of scallop shell powders and slaked lime for inactivating avian influenza virus under harsh conditions.

The efficacy and stability of scallop shell powder (SSP) were investigated, in terms of its capacity to inactivate avian influenza virus (AIV), and compared with slaked lime (SL). An environmental simulation was conducted by emulating sunlight and wet-dry conditions. The powders were collected at consecutive 2-week intervals under sunlight and upon every resuspension. These materials were tested by mixing them with AIV and incubating the mixture for 3 min or 20 h, followed by AIV titration. At the same time, a pH buffering test was conducted by neutralization with Tris-HCl. The results reveale

Treatment of odor by a seashell biofilter at a wastewater treatment plant.

UNLABELLED: Biofilters are becoming an increasingly popular treatment device for odors and other volatiles found at wastewater treatment plants. A seashell media based biofilter was installed in April 2011 at Lake Wildwood Wastewater Treatment Plant located in Penn Valley, California. It was sampled seasonally to examine its ability to treat odorous compounds found in the air above the anaerobic equalization basin at the front end of the plant and to examine the properties of the biofilter and its recirculating water system. The odor profile method sensory panels found mainly sulfide odors (ro

Radix natalensis: the effect of Fasciola hepatica infection on the reproductive activity of the snail.

Experimental infections of Egyptian Radix natalensis (shell height at miracidial exposure: 4 mm) with a French isolate of Fasciola hepatica were carried out under laboratory conditions at 22 °C to specify the characteristics and follow the dynamics of their egg-laying. Controls constituted unexposed R. natalensis of the same size. No significant difference between controls and the uninfected snails of the exposed group was noted, whatever the parameter considered. In controls and exposed snails, the dates of the first egg masses were close to each other (56.4-65.3 days). In contrast, the life
