Adenovirus and cryptosporidium co-infection in a corn snake (Elaphae guttata guttata).

A 1-yr-old albino male corn snake (Elaphae guttata guttata), which was part of a large breeding stock, was presented to the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine, Zoo and Exotic Animal Clinic with a history of anorexia for 2 wk and progressively declining body condition. The animal was euthanized due to a poor prognosis. Histopathology, electron microscopy, and polymerase chain reaction analysis on tissues revealed concurrent infection with adenovirus and Cryptosporidium. Primary infection with adenovirus could have caused immunodeficiency in the snake, thus predisposing it to

[Psoriasis in a female chimpanzee].

Psoriasis, a widespread genodermatosis in Homo sapiens, also appears in primates. We report on a female chimpanzee in Leipzig Zoo. After years of captivity the animal developed erythematosquamous, highly hyperkeratotic, lesions, some confluent, on the knees, elbows, back of the hands and feet and on the forearms and the seat, which showed histologically characteristic features of psoriasis. It may be that both previous infections and psychic stress resulting from social isolation had caused eruption of the disease. In the literature single cases of psoriasiform dermatoses have also been descri

Genomic and Micro-Evolutionary Features of Mammalian 2 orthobornavirus (Variegated Squirrel Bornavirus 1, VSBV-1).

Mammalian 2 orthobornavirus (VSBV-1) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen discovered in several exotic squirrel species and associated with fatal human encephalitis. The dynamics of VSBV-1 spread and evolution in its presumed natural hosts are unknown. Here, we present the phylogeny, micro-evolution, cross-species transmission and spread of VSBV-1 at a temporal and spatial resolution within the limits of animal husbandry. The results showed that VSBV-1 can be classified into six distinct groups and that the most recent common ancestor of the known German strains emerged at least 20 years ago. We h

Prevalence of Coxiella burneti antibodies in wild ruminants in kaveeany zoo, kosice, Eastern Slovakia.

Coxiella burnetii is an obligate intracellular agent that causes Q fever in humans and animals. The most important reservoirs of C. burnetii in nature are small wild rodents, but infection was also demonstrated in other animals, including ruminants. Samples of blood were obtained from 4 mouflons, 60 fallow deer, 9 Cameroun goats, 8 Carpathian goats, and 8 Cameroun sheep living in a zoo. Antibodies to phase I and phase II C. burnetii antigens were determined in sera by ELISA. Antibody titres were detected in the range 1:100-1:200. The serum prevalence of phase II and phase I antibodies to C. bu

Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza A virus infection associated with respiratory signs in sloth bears (Melursus ursinus).

In 2009, a pandemic influenza A virus (pH1N1) spread globally in humans and infected a broad range of captive animals with close human contact. In February 2014, a pH1N1 virus was isolated from a sloth bear with respiratory signs at a US zoo, demonstrating that recurring epidemics present an ongoing threat to animals, including threatened species. This is the first report of pH1N1 infection in sloth bears. To understand the sloth bear virus within the global context of pH1N1, phylogenetic trees were inferred including full-length sequences from available non-human, non-swine hosts, representin

Enhancing Behavioral Diversity and Activity Budgets in Zoo-Housed African Lions (Panthera leo leo) Through a Modified Feeding Method.

Research on positive animal welfare has prompted exploration and implementation of methods to stimulate the behavioral repertoires of zoo-housed species. We investigated the impact of a modified feeding method on the behavioral diversity, activity budgets, and social relations of five African lions at Zoo Antwerpen. The original method involved daily individual feedings indoors while the modified method provided group feedings three times a week outdoors. Observations spanned 6 weeks (3 weeks per method and a 1-week habituation period in between), yielding 150 h of behavioral data using contin

Intentional overdose of Large Animal Immobilon.

We describe a case of voluntary self-injection with Large Animal Immobilon, a veterinary anaesthesia product containing etorphine, a very strong opioid, and acepromazine, a phenothiazine. This resulted in cardiorespiratory arrest and the need for sustained haemodynamic support after resuscitation. Large Animal Immobilon is used under specific conditions only, mainly in zoo and wildlife medicine. Primary toxicological analysis, although guided by the presumed toxin, could only detect a metabolite of acepromazine in the urine. Further analysis was able to show some traces of etorphine. Investigation of koala retrovirus in captive koalas with pneumonia and comparative analysis of subtype distribution.

This study focused on the involvement of koala retrovirus (KoRV) in pneumonia in koalas. Three deceased pneumonic koalas from a Japanese zoo were examined in this study. Hematological and histopathological findings were assessed, and KoRV proviral DNA loads in the blood and tissues were compared with those of eight other KoRV-infected koalas from different zoos. Demographic data and routine blood profiles were collected, and blood and tissue samples were analyzed to rule out concurrent infections in pneumonic koalas. KoRV subtyping and measurement of the KoRV proviral DNA load were performed b

Relatives of rubella virus in diverse mammals.

Since 1814, when rubella was first described, the origins of the disease and its causative agent, rubella virus (Matonaviridae: Rubivirus), have remained unclear1. Here we describe ruhugu virus and rustrela virus in Africa and Europe, respectively, which are, to our knowledge, the first known relatives of rubella virus. Ruhugu virus, which is the closest relative of rubella virus, was found in apparently healthy cyclops leaf-nosed bats (Hipposideros cyclops) in Uganda. Rustrela virus, which is an outgroup to the clade that comprises rubella and ruhugu viruses, was found in acutely encephalitic

Dermatophytosis in red pandas (Ailurus fulgens fulgens): a review of 14 cases.

Fourteen cases of dermatophytosis were identified from medical records of red pandas (Ailurus fulgens fulgens) housed at the Knoxville Zoo between 1980 and 1996. The median age of affected animals on initial presentation was 8.5 wk (3 wk-11 mo). Clinical signs included crusting, purulent exudate, alopecia, thickening of affected skin, ulceration, and necrosis. Seven animals had mild lesions with signs restricted to crusting and/or alopecia, and six animals had more severe infections, with ulceration, skin necrosis, and purulent exudate. Five of the severely affected pandas had tail involvement

Assessing the health risks of reintroduction: The example of the Amur leopard, Panthera pardus orientalis.

Translocation of wildlife as a means of reintroducing or reinforcing threatened populations is an important conservation tool but carries health risks for the translocated animals and their progeny, as well as wildlife, domestic animals and humans in the release area. Disease risk analyses (DRA) are used to identify, prioritize and design mitigation strategies to address these threats. Here, we use a DRA undertaken for Amur leopards (Panthera pardus orientalis) to illustrate how specific methodology can optimize mitigation strategy design. A literature review identified a total of 98 infectiou

First report of SARS-CoV-2 co-infection with chronic dermatophytosis in a lion (Panthera leo) ex situ at Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Coronaviruses affecting humans traditionally caused mild respiratory infections. However, new zoonotic strains such as MERS-CoV (2012) and SARS-CoV-2 (2019) have led to severe acute respiratory syndromes. Since 2020, SARS-CoV-2 has been detected in several animal species, including pets (dogs, cats, ferrets), zoo animals (lions, tigers, snow leopards), and wild fauna (deer). Felids appear especially susceptible, with confirmed infections and deaths in large cats under human care. This raises concerns about reverse zoonosis and the need for strict biosecurity in zoological instituti

Obesity Prevalence and Associated Factors in Captive Asian Elephants (Elephas maximus) in China: A Body Condition Assessment Study.

Obesity is a prevalent health issue among captive wildlife, but the obesity status of captive Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in China has not been systematically investigated. This study assessed obesity in 204 captive Asian elephants across 43 facilities by recording seven potentially relevant variables: sex, age, daily feed supply, proportion of high-calorie feed, outdoor enclosure area, outdoor time, and foot disorders. Body condition was evaluated using visual scoring, revealing a high prevalence of overweight and obesity, particularly in zoo-kept elephants. Over 70% of captive Asian el

Identification and phylogenetic analysis of novel Piroplasmida detected in the two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus).

This study investigated the pathological and parasitological causes of death in two two-toed sloths (Choloepus didactylus) housed at a zoo in Hokkaido, Japan. Genomic DNA was extracted from the clotted blood of these animals and subsequently examined by nested PCR assays targeting the 18S rRNA and β-tubulin genes. The nucleotide sequences of these genes were determined and a phylogenetic analysis of the 18S rRNA gene was performed. One sample was detected positive in nested PCR. Sequencing analysis revealed that the detected parasite was closely related to the order Piroplasmida and was subseq

Bluetongue Virus Serotype 3 Follow-Up of the 2024 Outbreak in Two Belgian Zoos.

In summer 2024, Western Europe experienced extensive outbreaks of bluetongue virus Serotype 3 (BTV-3), a Culicoides-borne orbivirus. Clinical disease was first detected in August 2024 in one of two Belgian zoos, predominantly affecting European bison (Bison bonasus) and American bison (Bison bison). These species showed high morbidity, two fatalities, and severe multisystemic lesions at necropsy. This outbreak coincided with reemergence of BTV-8 and increasing reports of emerging BTV-12 and epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) circulation in Europe. Following the outbreak, samples from 1
