Ankle injuries, including sprains, strains and other joint derangements and instability, are common, especially for athletes involved in indoor court or jumping sports. PURPOSE: The aim was to study whether the degree of ankle dorsiflexion differs between subjects with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and uninjured controls. The Tillaux fracture of the ankle is an external rotation ankle injury resulting in an avulsion fracture of the anterolateral tibial plafond. Irreducible fracture dislocations of the ankle are rare and represent true orthopedic emergencies. We present a case of a fracture dislocation that was irreducible owing to a fixed dislocation of the proximal fibular fragment posterior to the lateral ridge of the tibia. This particular type of injury, known as a Bosworth fracture dislocation, was not appreciated on the initial radiographs taken in the emergency room but was identified at urgent surgical management. The trauma mechanism, radiographs, treatment, and relevant published data are discussed in the present report.

Primary treatment of acute ankle ligament injury is almost always conservative. The more severe injury is, the more careful initial treatment, rehabilitation and follow-up is required. If the rupture of ligaments is suspected, the ankle must be supported with an air splint or ankle support. Functional therapy is initiated immediately upon the occurrence of the injury. Independent training by the patient is the cornerstone of functional therapy. Persistence of symptoms or recurrent injuries are often due to inadequate rehabilitation.

Sixty-eight patients with a distal physeal injury to the tibia and/or the fibula were reviewed, with an average followup of 27 years and 4 months from the initial lesion. Fifty-one patients with fibular ligamentous injury of the ankle are presented. The treatment consisted of complete non-weight-bearing of the affected foot by use of elbow crutches for three weeks. All patients were seen at follow-up eighteen months after the accident.
