Ancylostoma caninum is one of the most important hookworms in dogs. A study revealed that the prevalence of ancylostomiasis in Indonesia is relatively high. However, cases of persistent ancylostomiasis in dogs were reported, indicating the possibility of anthelmintic resistance. We report a case of a female patient with alveolar echinococcosis (AE) who presented with progressive pulmonary and hepatic lesions and had a fatal outcome. AE affecting the liver, the lungs and the brain had been diagnosed 20 years ago and treated successfully with albendazole and stereotactic gamma knife therapy. The antiparasitic activity of racemic albendazole-sulphoxide (Ricobendazole = racRBZ) and its (+) and (-) enantiomers was tested in an ex vivo murine model for Trichinella spiralis infection. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of a single dose mebendazole 500 mg from the original manufacturer and a formulation locally produced by State Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Corporation of Sri Lanka and albendazole 400 mg in mass treatment of soil-transmitted nematode infections.

Canine angiostrongylosis was diagnosed in a whippet with typical signs of respiratory and circulatory distress. Subclinical Angiostrongylus vasorum infections were also demonstrated in two other whippets belonging to the same owner. The efficacy and minimum therapeutic dose of closantel, an injectable salicylanilide anthelmintic, was evaluated on adult Ancylostoma caninum. Doses of 7.5 and 10 mg/kg had a marked anthelmintic effect on adult stages, removing 99 and 98%, respectively. A second experiment tested the efficacy of closantel against hypobiotic larval stages of A. caninum. Selective synthesis of 1- and 2-acyl-, alkoxycarbonyl-, and carbamoylindazoles are described. Spectroscopic data which were the basis for structural assignments are presented. These compounds, particularly methyl 2H-indazole-2-carboxylate and N-heptyl-N-methyl-2H-indazole-2-carboxamide, lack the spectrum of anthelmintic activity of the benzimidazole and benzotriazole anthelmintics to which they are structurally related.
