Bacillus anthracis is a spore-forming microbe that persists in soil and causes anthrax disease. The most natural route of infection is ingestion by grazing animals. Gastrointestinal (GI) anthrax also occurs in their monogastric predators, including humans. Exposure of carcasses to oxygen triggers sporulation and contamination of the surrounding soil completing the unusual life cycle of this microbe. The pathogenesis of GI anthrax is poorly characterized. Here, we use B. anthracis carrying the virulence plasmids pXO1 and pXO2, to model gastrointestinal disease in Guinea pigs and mice. We find t…

Anthrax is a zoonotic disease caused by Bacillus anthracis, which has multiple routes of infection in humans, manifesting in different initial presentations of disease. Because B anthracis has the potential to be used as a biological weapon and can rapidly progress to systemic anthrax with high mortality in those who are exposed and untreated, clinical guidance that can be quickly implemented must be in place before any intentional release of the agent. This document provides clinical guidance for the prophylaxis and treatment of neonates, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults up to…

BACKGROUND: Anthrax is an acute infection caused by the Gram-positive organism, Bacillus anthracis, which rarely affects humans under normal conditions. Depending on the mode of contamination, there are three distinct clinical forms: pulmonary, gastrointestinal and cutaneous. This type of infection is still common in the developing countries, a fact that should be borne in mind by examining doctors, and in particular by dermatologists. It is important to recognise the clinical aspects of this disease rarely encountered in clinical practice since any delay in treatment may have fatal consequenc…

The objective of this study was to determine whether a DNA prime-protein boost immunization against the Bacillus anthracis protective antigen (PA) and lethal factor (LF) antigens could induce a protective immune response against significant aerosol challenge in the rabbit model. Rabbits were vaccinated with different regimens of DNA vaccines (Table 1) and aerosol challenged with B. anthracis spores, Ames strain, with an average dose of 50 LD(50s) with a range from 18 to 169 LD(50s.) Of the five vaccinated rabbits that survived, two were immunized intramuscularly (i.m.) with DNA followed with a

Anthrax toxin is a key virulence factor for Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax. Here we discuss what is known about the anthrax toxin receptor (ATR), the cellular receptor for anthrax toxin, and how this information is being used to develop treatments for anthrax as well as to understand aspects of cancer. ATR was identified recently as a type I transmembrane protein with unknown function that contains an extracellular integrin-like inserted (I) domain. The ATR I domain contains the toxin binding site, and a soluble form of this domain was shown to serve as an effective antitox…

We report a patient suffering from cowpox infection, in whom the clinical features mimicked those of anthrax. The infection may have been acquired as a result of contact with a rodent.
