Strong positive allometry of bite force in leaf-cutter ants increases the range of cuttable plant tissues.

OBJECTIVE: Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a reactive hypermelanosis of various skin types, which occurs as a sequela of cutaneous inflammation or injury. Despite generally a self-limited and temporary condition, PIH is still a frustrating problem that can have significant psychosocial effects on patients, especially those with darker skin types. Laser therapy is one of the effective treatments for PIH, and various wavelength lasers and light devices have been utilized in PIH therapy. Nonetheless, data on the long-term efficacy of the 755-nm alexandrite picosecond laser are limite

Predation of Aedes aegypti Eggs By Foraging Ants Solenopsis invicta, Myrmicaria brunnea, Diacamma rugosum, and Monomorium minimum.

The diseases transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, such as dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika, are ever-increasing. Rapid and unplanned urbanization adversely impacts various endemic species such as ants and facilitates the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes. We have observed the predatory potential of ants over Aedes eggs in urban breeding habitats, and their impact on Aedes mosquito breeding was determined by a field experiment that mimicked the natural breeding habitats. It was found that 99.4% of eggs were removed from the experimental containers by foraging ants in 4 days. The present study…

Insecticidal and Cholinesterase Activity of Dichloromethane Extracts of Tithonia diversifolia on Atta cephalotes Worker Ants (Formicidae: Myrmicinae).

Leaf-cutter ants are agricultural and urban pests that defy chemical control methods. Laboratory and field studies have revealed repellent and insecticidal activity by the extracts of Tithonia diversifolia (Asteraceae), known as Mexican sunflower, as a promising alternative for the control of the leaf-cutter ant Atta cephalotes. This study evaluated the effects of different extracts (non-polar and polar) of T. diversifolia dry leaves on worker ants from laboratory colonies of A. cephalotes through ingestion and contact. In addition, the biological activity of the extracts as inhibitors of acet…

Idiosyncratic route-based memories in desert ants, Melophorus bagoti: how do they interact with path-integration vectors?

Individually foraging desert ants of central Australia, Melophorus bagoti, exhibit amazingly precise mechanisms of visual landmark guidance when navigating through cluttered environments. If trained to shuttle back and forth between the nest and a feeder, they establish habitual outbound and inbound routes, which guide them idiosyncratically across the natural maze of extended arrays of grass tussocks covering their foraging areas. The route-based memories that usually differ between outbound and inbound runs are acquired already during the first runs to the nest and feeder. If the ants are di…

Comparing simulation and physical kilobots performance in two ant-inspired foraging behaviours.

Robotics looks to nature for inspiration to perform effectively in unstructured environments and can be used to test biological hypotheses. Social animals often share information about food source locations like tandem running in ants, where a leader guides a naive recruit to a known profitable food site. This is extremely advantageous as it allows the sharing of important information among colony members, but it also has costs, such as waiting time inside the nest when no leaders are around, and a reduced walking speed for the tandem couple compared to individuals. Whether and when these cost…

Bacterial microbiomes and antifungal effect of Danish wood ant (Formica polyctena) populations.

UNLABELLED: Ants, including wood ants (Formica polyctena), can control arthropod pests, and recent research has highlighted their potential against plant pathogens. The latter effect is likely aided by antimicrobial ant-associated microbes. Here, we investigated the bacterial microbiome of wood ants (F. polyctena), and their nests across five sites in Denmark. We assessed the ants' deposition of antimicrobial microbes with inhibitory effects against the economically important plant-pathogenic fungi, Monilinia fructigena, Botrytis cinerea, and Fusarium graminearum, and hypothesized that deposit…

Evaluating the effectiveness of caffeine-based baits against two pest ant species.

The black cocoa ant, Dolichoderus thoracicus (Smith, 1860) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) is a pest species capable of reaching high population densities in diverse habitats. In Taiwan, infestations are associated with intrusions into residential homes, damage to electrical equipment, and decreased agricultural productivity. Although baiting programs using borax-based or boric acid-based ant baits have been implemented, these efforts often yield unsatisfactory results. This study evaluated the potential of caffeine, a naturally occurring bioactive compound, as an active ingredient in ant baits for

Kounis syndrome: acute myocardial injury triggered by ant bite-induced anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis triggered by insect bites is well-documented, but its association with acute myocardial injury (AMI) is rare. We report a case of Kounis syndrome, where an ant bite induced anaphylaxis and myocardial injury. A 47-year-old diabetic male presented with anaphylaxis following an ant bite, exhibiting hypotension, respiratory distress, and wheezing. Electrocardiography revealed transient widespread ST depression and ST elevation in lead aVR, a pattern reflecting global ischemia, which is uncommon in Kounis syndrome. Treatment with intramuscular adrenaline stabilized his condition. Peak t

Fire ant-venom anaphylaxis prevalence in the general population and patients with systemic mastocytosis.

BACKGROUND: Stinging Hymenoptera can induce fatal anaphylaxis, especially in patients with systemic mastocytosis. Fire ants, Solenopsis invicta and S. richteri, from South America have recently colonized three continents. Prevalence of fire ant-venom anaphylaxis in the general population and in systemic mastocytosis is unknown. The aim was to determine fire ant-venom anaphylaxis prevalence among Tricare beneficiaries and those with systemic mastocytosis. METHODS: We queried the beneficiary immunotherapy prescription database for patients who received immunotherapy with Hymenoptera venom or fi…

Ante-mortem diagnosis of unilateral pulmonary vein stenosis in a cat: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) detection in cats may be challenging. Pulmonary venous stenosis (PVS) is rare in cats and can lead to PH. The only reported PVS case received a post-mortem diagnosis. Imaging during the cat's lifetime established the diagnosis in this case. CASE PRESENTATION: A 2 year-old Norwegian Forest cat was diagnosed with pulmonary oedema and PH secondary to cor triatriatum sinister (CTS) and showed improved breathing following two subcutaneous furosemide treatments, 1 and 2 mg/kg, during an overnight stay at the referral veterinary hospital. Pathogen-specific social immunity is associated with erosion of individual immune function in an ant.

Contagious diseases are a major threat to societies in which individuals live in close contact. Social insects have evolved collective defense behaviors, such as social care or isolation of infected workers, that prevent outbreaks of pathogens. It has thus been suggested that individual immunity is reduced in species with such 'social immunity'. However, this hypothesis has not been tested functionally. Here, we characterize the immune response of the ant Lasius niger using a combination of genomic analysis, experimental infections, gene expression quantification, behavioural observations and

Chemical Modifications to Enhance the Drug Properties of a VIP Receptor Antagonist (ANT) Peptide.

Antagonist peptides (ANTs) of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide receptors (VIP-Rs) are shown to enhance T cell activation and proliferation in vitro, as well as improving T cell-dependent anti-tumor response in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) murine models. However, peptide therapeutics often suffer from poor metabolic stability and exhibit a short half-life/fast elimination in vivo. In this study, we describe efforts to enhance the drug properties of ANTs via chemical modifications. The lead antagonist (ANT308) is derivatized with the following modifications: N-terminus acetylation, peptide stap…

Simulated biomechanical performance of morphologically disparate ant mandibles under bite loading.

Insects evolved various modifications to their mouthparts, allowing for a broad exploration of feeding modes. In ants, workers perform non-reproductive tasks like excavation, food processing, and juvenile care, relying heavily on their mandibles. Given the importance of biting for ant workers and the significant mandible morphological diversity across species, it is essential to understand how mandible shape influences its mechanical responses to bite loading. We employed Finite Element Analysis to simulate biting scenarios on mandible volumetric models from 25 ant species classified in differ…

Ant behavioral maturation is mediated by a stochastic transition between two fundamental states.

The remarkable ecological success of social insects is often attributed to their advanced division of labor, which is closely associated with temporal polyethism in which workers transition between different tasks as they age. Young nurses are typically found deep within the nest where they tend to the queen and the brood, whereas older foragers are found near the entrance and outside the nest.1-3 However, the individual-level maturation dynamics remain poorly understood because following individuals over relevant timescales is difficult; hence, previous experimental studies used same-age coho

Global View on Ant Venom Allergy: from Allergenic Components to Clinical Management.

Hymenoptera venom allergy is characterised by systemic anaphylactic reactions that occur in response to stings from members of the Hymenoptera order. Stinging by social Hymenoptera such as ants, honeybees, and vespids is one of the 3 major causes of anaphylaxis; along with food and drug exposure, it accounts for up to 43% of anaphylaxis cases and 20% of anaphylaxis-related fatalities. Despite their recognition as being of considerable public health significance, stinging ant venoms are relatively unexplored in comparison to other animal venoms and may be overlooked as a cause of venom allergy.…

Zombie-Ant Fungi Emerged from Non-manipulating, Beetle-Infecting Ancestors.

The manipulation of animal behavior by parasitic organisms is one of the most complex adaptations to have arisen via natural selection. Among the most impressive examples of behavioral manipulation are the zombie-ant fungi [1]. In this association, ants are controlled to leave the colony and perform a stereotyped death grip behavior, where they bite onto vegetation over foraging trails, before being killed for the post mortem fungal growth. Manipulation functions to provide a platform outside the nest, from which fungal parasites actively shoot out spores, targeting foraging ants because withi…

The Circadian Clock of the Ant Camponotus floridanus Is Localized in Dorsal and Lateral Neurons of the Brain.

The circadian clock of social insects has become a focal point of interest for research, as social insects show complex forms of timed behavior and organization within their colonies. These behaviors include brood care, nest maintenance, foraging, swarming, defense, and many other tasks, of which several require social synchronization and accurate timing. Ants of the genus Camponotus have been shown to display a variety of daily timed behaviors such as the emergence of males from the nest, foraging, and relocation of brood. Nevertheless, circadian rhythms of isolated individuals have been stud…

Which ante mortem clinical features predict progressive supranuclear palsy pathology?

BACKGROUND: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neuropathologically defined disease presenting with a broad spectrum of clinical phenotypes. OBJECTIVE: To identify clinical features and investigations that predict or exclude PSP pathology during life, aiming at an optimization of the clinical diagnostic criteria for PSP. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of the literature published since 1996 to identify clinical features and investigations that may predict or exclude PSP pathology. We then extracted standardized data from clinical charts of patients with pathologically diagnos

Ante-, peri- and postnatal factors associated with intraventricular hemorrhage in very premature infants.

BACKGROUND: Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is one of the most serious complications in preterm infants and is associated with neurological sequelae and mortality. Over the past few decades, the rate of IVH has decreased due to improved neonatal intensive care. However, up to 15-25% of very and extremely premature infants (<32 and <28weeks of pregnancy (WOP) respectively) still suffer from IVH. STUDY PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to perform an updated, multicenter analysis to identify ante-, peri, and postnatal factors other than gestational age/birth weight associated with IVH of any …
