Congenital aphakia: a clinicopathologic report of three cases.

BACKGROUND: Congenital aphakia is a rare condition that has been classified as primary when no lens induction of the surface ectoderm occurs and secondary when lens development takes place but later is resorbed or expelled in utero. METHODS: The authors report the clinical and pathologic findings in three infants with congenital aphakia whose eyes were enucleated either at surgery at 11 months or at autopsy after 1 and 3 days of life. RESULTS: Two cases classified as primary congenital aphakia had severe microphthalmos, anterior segment aplasia, or anomalous development and posterior choroid…

[The results of correcting aphakia by an artificial lens implant].

The author shows the efficacy of correction in aphakia by intraocular lenses in the absence of ocular biometry and using of viscoelastic substance on a group of 258 cases hospitalised and operated in the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Medicine from Cluj-Napoca. The study includes also the immediate and late complications of intraocular lenses and causes for removal of intraocular lens.

Results of intraocular lens implantation in paediatric aphakia.

Intraocular lenses were implanted in 16 eyes of 13 patients with congenital cataract, and visual progress was plotted using a preferential-l … -up, this procedure offers an effective and safe method for the correction of unilateral paediatric aphakia, and, in selected cases only, for bilateral aphakia.

[Intraocular correction of the aphakia in fragmentation wounds of the eye].

The authors analyze the problem of intraocular correction in patients with penetrating missile wounds of the eyeball. A total of 292 patients were examined; besides clinical, electrophysiologic and ultrasonic methods were used, as well as endothelial microscopy. In cases with nonremoved intraocular foreign bodies x-ray examination and computer tomography were employed. The patients were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 (n = 195) included patients with posttraumatic cataracts and a history of removed foreign body, Group 2 (n = 97) consisted of those with posttraumatic cataracts and a foreign body

Vitrectomy in aphakia: a simplified technique for fundus visualisation.

By using a small air bubble that fills about two thirds of the anterior chamber the erect image of the fundus of the aphakic human eye can be visualised clearly during vitrectomy, enabling the surgeon to operate without the need for vitrectomy lenses. The refractive power of the human aphakic eye is calculated here and the image site and size are presented.

Epikeratoplasty. The surgical correction of aphakia, myopia, and keratoconus.

Thirty-five patients have had 39 consecutive epikeratoplasty procedures (12 adult aphakic, 9 pediatric aphakic, 12 myopic, and 6 keratoconic eyes) by the same surgeon, using commercially prepared lenticules. The lenticule remained totally clear in 85% of eyes. Two lenticules were removed due to infection and scarring; four lenticules had minimal scarring and did not require removal. Spectacle-corrected acuity was worse than one line from the preoperative spectacle-corrected acuity in 58% of the adult aphakic eyes; however, 75% were 20/50 or better postoperatively. Fifty percent were within 2 d

The use of extended wear contact lenses in aphakia.

Guidelines for the selection and fitting of extended wear contact lenses in aphakia are presented. Important points in the management and the visual results of patients with these lenses are discussed.

[Correction of aphakia with permalens lenses (author's transl)].

Permalens contact lenses for extended wear offer further possibilities for correcting aphakic eyes. In some cases they may constitute an alternative to intraocular lenses. Preliminary results of a long-term study are presented.

Epikeratophakia -- the surgical correction of aphakia. Update 1981.

Epikeratophakia grafts used to rehabilitate vision in adult monocular aphakic patients intolerate of contact lens correction or not candidates for IOLs were studied prospectively. Thirty-two patients who entered this study between its inception in February 1980 through February 1981 were followed for at least eight months. Patients with normal visual potential before surgery had average visual acuities with spectacle overcorrection of 20/50 at four months, 20/40 at eight months, and 20/30 at one year. Few long-term complications were seen. Empirical modification of the lathing process has decr

The use of epikeratophakia grafts in pediatric monocular aphakia.

Epikeratophakia is a form of refractive surgery in which the recipient's epithelium is removed and a pre-shaped donor lenticule is sutured to the patient's cornea. Seventeen patients ranging in age from two months to 6.6 years received 19 epikeratophakia grafts for the correction of aphakic vision. The correction provided by the graft in combination with vigorous amblyopia therapy has yielded some improvement in vision in the 12 patients with successful grafts. This procedure may be particularly suitable for pediatric aphakic patients because it is extraocular and reversible and may be employe

An extended wear hard contact lens in aphakia.

In reviewing the literature, there are several reports of limited success with both hard and soft contact lenses for continuous or extended wear. Aphakia is the most common indication for continuous wear, especially in monocular aphakes who are unable to insert and remove their lenses for various reasons. Because of its unusual oxygen permeability, silicone is the logical choice of material for an extended wear lens. However, because of the problems in manufacture, as well as its hydrophobic characteristics, poor centering, and problems with proper edging, no silicone lens has had wide clinica…

[Results of aphakia correction with permanent silicone lenses].

Silicone contact lenses were fitted postoperatively to 114 aphakic eyes (55 children, 59 adults) and followed up for a maximum of 2 years. Provided they were fitted carefully the lenses were well tolerated for surprisingly long periods of time. Complications observed were superficial ulcer in 2 cases and circumscribed corneal infiltration in 3 cases and circumscribed corneal infiltration in 3 cases and circumscribed corneal infiltration in 3 cases. Corneal vascularization was not found. Postoperative vision was good, corneal astigmatism being reduced by 0.87 D on average. The main problems wer
