BACKGROUND: Metastatic lesions to the appendix are rare. They usually present with acute appendicitis or remain asymptomatic and are diagnosed incidentally. A man in his 60's was admitted to our hospital because of right lower abdominal pain. We diagnosed acute appendicitis with an abscess, and he was treated with laparoscopic-assisted appendectomy. The histopathological diagnosis was a goblet cell carcinoid (GCC) of the appendix. Because of the possibility of lymph node metastasis, the patient underwent laparoscopic- assisted ileo-cecum resection with lymph node dissection (D2). Metastasis was detected in one of the dissected lymph nodes. This patient has been followed-up for a year after surgery and no recurrences have been detected.
