"Will you need this health at all? Will you be alive?": using the bioecological model of mass trauma to understand HIV care experiences during the war in Ukraine.

INTRODUCTION: Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has severely impacted the healthcare system, including the provision of HIV care. The ongoing war is a human-caused mass trauma, a severe ecological and psychosocial disruption that greatly exceeds the coping capacity of the community. The bioecological model of mass trauma builds on Bronfenbrenner's concept of interaction between nested systems to argue that social context determines the impact of life events on the individual and how an individual responds. This paper uses the bioecological model of mass trauma to explore the impact

Associations among Soil-Transmitted Helminths, G6PD Deficiency and Asymptomatic Malaria Parasitemia, and Anemia in Schoolchildren from a Conflict Zone of Northeast Myanmar.

In tropical areas of developing countries, the interactions among parasitic diseases such as soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) and malaria, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PDd), are complex. Here, we investigated their interactions and impact on anemia in school students residing in a conflict zone of northeast Myanmar. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between July and December 2015 in two schools located along the China-Myanmar border. Stool samples from the schoolchildren were analyzed for STH infections, whereas finger-prick blood samples were analyzed for G6PDd, h

Health Sovereignty Under Occupation: A Comparative Analysis of Health System Constraints and Their Implications for Nursing Practice in Conflict Settings.

ObjectivesTo examine documented occupation-related constraints in relation to health-system functioning through comparative document analysis and to explore potential implications for nursing practice in conflict-affected settings.MethodsA comparative qualitative case study of Gaza and the West Bank examined documentary accounts of health-system constraints during 2015-2023. An earlier manuscript version reported an analytical corpus of 347 documents; the original source inventory and records needed to verify that count are no longer available. Documents were interpreted through a hybrid deduc

The impact of conflicts on patients with chronic kidney disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Patients with kidney disease, especially patients with kidney failure, are disproportionately affected in settings of active conflict, as they rely on near constant medical care for survival. Recent increases in violent conflicts are endangering increasing numbers of patients, requiring immediate attention, a revision of current knowledge and constructive actions. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent violent conflicts have revealed the profound vulnerability of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In war-torn regions such as Ethiopia, Sudan, Gaza, and Ukraine, availability of ess

The prevalence of depression and anxiety and associated factors among school-going adolescents in poverty and conflict-affected settings in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Schools could play a vital role in mental health care, particularly in low-income countries such as Uganda. An understanding of the prevalence and associated factors of mental health symptoms among school-going adolescents is essential for designing effective school-based interventions in Uganda This is important given Uganda's regional disparities, where adolescents in post-conflict areas may face higher exposure to trauma and limited access to mental health care compared to those in non-conflict regions. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence rates of depressive and anxie

Vector-borne diseases and the Syrian conflict: A systematic review of literature from Syria and neighbouring, refugee-hosting countries.

OBJECTIVES: Syria's conflict has forced more than half its populations from their homes, decimated its health system and water and sanitation infrastructure, leading to an increase in communicable diseases, particularly vector-borne diseases (VBDs.) This systematic review explores the epidemiological burden and geographical distribution of VBDs in Syria and neighbouring, refugee-hosting countries following the onset of the Syrian uprisings. METHODS: Four databases were searched using appropriate MeSH terms. Included studies reported on data collected between March 2011 and May 2024 on VBD-aff

Risk of rabies reintroduction into the European Union as a result of the Russo-Ukrainian war: A quantitative disease risk analysis.

AIMS: The importation of rabid animals poses a continual threat to rabies freedom in the European Union (EU). Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the European Commission eased the rules on companion animal importations for Ukrainian refugees through derogations to the EU Pet Travel Scheme (EU PETS). As Ukraine remains endemic for canine rabies, this paper aimed to quantitatively assess whether the change in regulations affected the risk of rabies introduction to the EU. METHOD AND RESULTS: Transmission pathways for both EU PETS and derogations to this scheme were considered, as

Continued Endemic Wild Poliovirus Transmission in Security-Compromised Areas - Nigeria, 2016.

On August 10, 2016, 2 years after the most recent wild poliovirus (WPV) case was reported in Nigeria (in July 2014) (1), two WPV cases were reported in the northeastern state of Borno, which has been severely affected by insurgency-related insecurity since 2013. On September 9 and 26, 2016, two additional WPV cases were reported in Borno in children whose families migrated from security-compromised, inaccessible areas of the state. All four cases were WPV serotype 1 (WPV1), with genetic differences indicating prolonged undetected transmission. A large-scale emergency response plan was develope

Behavioral profiles displayed by rats in an elevated asymmetric plus-maze: effects of diazepam.

When rats are exposed to unknown environments where novelty and fear-inducing characteristics are present (conflictive environments), some specific behaviors are induced and exploration is apparently modulated by fear. In our laboratory, a new type of plus-maze was designed as a model of conflictive exploration. The maze is composed of four arms with different geometrical characteristics, differing from each other by the presence or absence of walls. The degree of asymmetry was as follows: NW, no wall arm; SW, a single high wall present; HL, a low and a high wall present, and HH, two high wall

Assessing the influence of conflict on the dynamics of sex work and the HIV and HCV epidemics in Ukraine: protocol for an observational, ethnographic, and mathematical modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Armed conflict erupted in eastern Ukraine in 2014 and still continues. This conflict has resulted in an intensification of poverty, displacement and migration, and has weakened the local health system. Ukraine has some of the highest rates of HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV) in Europe. Whether and how the current conflict, and its consequences, will lead to changes in the HIV and HCV epidemic in Ukraine is unclear. Our study aims to characterize how the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine and its consequences influence the pattern, practice, and experience of sex work and how this affects H

Antibiotic stewardship and antimicrobial resistance in conflict-affected Sudan: a situational analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global concern, the drivers and consequences of which are exacerbated by poverty and inequality, with Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) bearing the highest rates, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa. Armed conflict further exasperates problem, by damaging healthcare systems, limiting access to essential medicines, and increasing the use of antibiotics in uncertain environments. This study sought to explore healthcare professionals' views on AMR and antimicrobial stewardship challenges before and during the conflict to investigate the impact

Rebel responses to disasters in conflict zones: a case study of Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar.

Populations in conflict-affected contexts face overlapping drivers of disaster risk. This article explores the intersection of disasters and armed conflict through an analysis of the role of non-state armed groups, focusing on the Arakan Army (AA)'s response to Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar's Rakhine State in 2023. Using the process tracing method and drawing on interviews and secondary sources, the study finds that the AA's fragmented territorial control and parallel governance structures nonetheless enabled extensive humanitarian operations through collaboration with civil society and volunteer n

The forgotten foe returns: cholera's warning to a complacent world demanding urgent action.

Cholera, a deadly bacterial infection, affects 1.3-4 million people annually. Reports in early 2025 show a sharp rise in cases, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean and African regions, posing a serious global threat. This perspective argues that this reappearance is not just a periodic outbreak, but rather the result of interconnected global crises: climate change, armed conflicts, and a fragile healthcare system. This article analyzes these factors driving the spread of cholera and critically evaluates the roles of the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international bodies. While …
