Acute Kidney Injury among Neonates with Perinatal Asphyxia in a Tertiary Care Centre.

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal asphyxia is a very common cause of morbidity and mortality in both term and preterm neonates and ranks the second most important cause of neonatal death. The incidence and importance of acute kidney injury in the neonatal period are becoming increasingly apparent. Early diagnosis and timely management of acute kidney injury is very important in these newborns to avoid other long-term adverse events. This study aimed to find out the prevalence of acute kidney injury among neonates with perinatal asphyxia in a tertiary care centre. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional

Maximizing the detection rate of hypoglycemia among preterm neonates admitted in Neonatal intensive care unit in Ethiopia, 2021.

The burden of hypoglycemia is high in resource limited countries, such as Ethiopia. However, there are no sufficient studies conducted in Ethiopia in general and in the study setting in particular in the previous era. Hence, this study aims to assess the proportion of hypoglycemia and associated factors among preterm neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit at Debre Tabor Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Ethiopia, in 2021. A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from October 1 to December 30, 2021, at Debre Tabor Comprehensive Specialized Hospital in the neonatal i

[Infants of low birth weight after deliveries, morbidity and mortality (author's transl)].

Morbidity and mortality of 908 immature births (newborn infants under 2501 g; still births with crown-heel lengths 35 cm plus) which occured at the University Clinic, Mannheim, Department of obstetrics and Gynecology between the years 1966 and 1971 were studied and compared with a random selection of 782 newborn infants with birth weights of at least 2500 g. From a total of 832 live born immatures, one quarter had an initial Apgar score of 1--7. 67% of these were under 1000 g, 22,07% had birth weights between 1501 and 2000 g and 12,72% between 2001 and 2500 g. Immediately post-partum 89,7% of

A Piglet Perinatal Asphyxia Model to Study Cardiac Injury and Hemodynamics after Cardiac Arrest, Resuscitation, and the Return of Spontaneous Circulation.

Neonatal piglets have been extensively used as translational models for perinatal asphyxia. In 2007, we adapted a well-established piglet asphyxia model by introducing cardiac arrest. This enabled us to study the impact of severe asphyxia on key outcomes, including the time taken for the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), as well as the effect of chest compressions according to alternative protocols for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Due to the anatomical and physiological similarities between piglets and human neonates, piglets serve as good models in studies of cardiopulmonary resusci

Two Useful Umbilical Biomarkers for Therapeutic Hypothermia Decision in Patients with Hypoxic İschemic Encephalopathy with Perinatal Asphyxia: Netrin-1 and Neuron Specific Enolase.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) has a high risk of mortality in addition to serious neurological damage. In this study, we investigated the values of umbilical cord netrin-1 (NT-1) and neuron specific enolase (NSE) levels in the early diagnosis of HIE stage II/III induced by neonatal asphyxia. In the study group, infants with gestational age ≥ 36 weeks who were diagnosed with HIE II/III were included. NT-1 and NSE levels were measured from the umbilical cord immediately after birth. Results were compared between HIE II/III and the healthy control group. Cutoff values for serum NT-1 and N

Reciprocal assessment of urinary beta-2-microglobulin and BUN levels in renal dysfunction of neonates with birth asphyxia.

OBJECTIVE: Asphyxia at birth is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in all neonates due to various organ dysfunctions, for example, kidneys. Recent advances in this area have suggested new urinary proteins for the assessment of renal damage, including beta-2 microglobulin (β2-MG). The aim of this study was to investigate the changes of urinary β2-MG in asphyxiated neonates and to evaluate the value of combined detection of multiple biomarkers in the early diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) in asphyxiated neonates. STUDY DESIGN: This case-control study was performed on 84 te

Hospital-related, maternal, and fetal risk factors for neonatal asphyxia and moderate or severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy: a retrospective cohort study.

AIM: A previous large US study had documented an increased risk of asphyxia in small volume and rural hospitals. Our objective was to evaluate this in all hospitals in Alberta, a Canadian province. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of all singleton births ≥ 35-week gestation, in Alberta, from 2002-16 recorded in a perinatal database. Asphyxia was defined as intrapartum stillbirth or neonatal death from asphyxia or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit admission and at least two of the following: a. Apgar score of ≤ 5 at 10 minutes; b. mechanical ventilation or chest compressions for resuscitation wi

Hearing impairment after asphyxia and neonatal encephalopathy: a Norwegian population-based study.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between perinatal asphyxia, neonatal encephalopathy, and childhood hearing impairment. This is a population-based study including all Norwegian infants born ≥ 36 weeks gestation between 1999 and 2014 and alive at 2 years (n = 866,232). Data was linked from five national health registries with follow-up through 2019. Perinatal asphyxia was defined as need for neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission and an Apgar 5-min score of 4-6 (moderate) or 0-3 (severe). We coined infants with seizures and an Apgar 5-min score < 7 as neonatal enc

Characteristics and outcomes of neonates with intrapartum asphyxia managed with therapeutic hypothermia in a public tertiary hospital in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: In randomized clinical trials, therapeutic hypothermia (TH) has been shown to reduce death and/or moderate-to-severe disability in neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in high-income countries, while this has not consistently been the case in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Many studies reporting on outcomes of neonates with HIE managed with TH are those conducted under controlled study conditions, and few reporting in settings where this intervention is offered as part of standard of care, especially from LMICs. In this study we report on short-term outcome

Urinary beta-2 microglobulin as an early predictive biomarker of acute kidney injury in neonates with perinatal asphyxia.

To evaluate the role of urinary beta-2 microglobulin (B2mG) as an early predictive biomarker of acute kidney injury (AKI) in neonates with perinatal asphyxia. In this prospective cohort study, 80 term infants with perinatal asphyxia were included. The neonates were divided into AKI and no-AKI groups. Urinary B2mG levels were measured at 24 h of life. The diagnostic efficacy of the biomarker was determined using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Compared to infants without AKI, infants with AKI had higher levels of urinary B2mG (mean 6.8 versus 2.6 mg/L, p < 0.001). Area under the
