Prenatal Testosterone and Preschool Disruptive Behavior Disorders.

Disruptive Behaviors Disorders (DBD), including Oppositional-Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), are fairly common and highly impairing childhood behavior disorders that can be diagnosed as early as preschool. Prenatal exposure to testosterone may be particularly relevant to these early-emerging DBDs that exhibit a sex-biased prevalence rate favoring males. The current study examined associations between preschool DBD symptom domains and prenatal exposure to testosterone measured indirectly via right 2D:4D finger-length ratios. The study sample consisted

Neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions in 600 Swedish children with the avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder phenotype.

BACKGROUND: Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a feeding and eating disorder characterized by extremely restricted dietary variety and/or quantity resulting in serious consequences for physical health and psychosocial functioning. ARFID often co-occurs with neurodevelopmental conditions (NDCs) and psychiatric conditions, but previous data are mostly limited to small clinical samples examining a narrow range of conditions. Here, we examined NDCs and psychiatric conditions in a large, population-based group of children with ARFID. METHODS: In 30,795 children born 1992-2008 in

[Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder comorbidity in a school sample of children].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the frequency of conduct disorder (CD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHOD: This study was performed with children between 7 and 11 years old who fit the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria (n=35) to ADHD, normal neurologic examination and abnormal evolutionary neurological examination (ENE) by Lefèvre. Parents answered a questionnaire with DSM-IV criteria to ADHD and comorbidities. RESULT: ADHD combined subtype was the most prevalent (51.4%). Fourteen (40%) had CD,

Iron Deficiency in Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Internalizing and Externalizing Disorders, and Movement Disorders.

This article reviews the role of iron in brain development and function, with a focus on the association between iron deficiency (ID) and neuropsychiatric conditions. First, we describe how ID is defined and diagnosed. Second, the role of iron in brain development and function is summarized. Third, we review current findings implicating ID in a number of neuropsychiatric conditions in children and adolescents, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and other disruptive behavior disorders, depressive and anxiety disorders, autism spectrum disorder, movement disorders, and other situ

The Test of Everyday Attention for Children (TEA-Ch): patterns of performance in children with ADHD and clinical controls.

The present study explores the utility of the Test of Everyday Attention for Children (TEA-Ch) as a measure of the attentional impairments displayed by children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Sixty-three children with ADHD and 23 non-ADHD Clinical Control children were compared on subtests of the TEA-Ch reflecting three attentional domains: sustained, selective, and attentional control. Results show that children with ADHD performed significantly worse than clinical controls on subtests of sustained attention and attentional control. The groups did not differ, however, o

The Use of Indirect Aggression among Boys and Girls with and without Conduct Problems: Trajectories from Childhood to Adolescence.

Though conceptually distinct from other behavior problems, indirect aggression (IA) is correlated with physical aggression and is linked to oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder from childhood to adolescence. Thus, IA could be part of the clinical picture of children with identified conduct problems (CP). However, trajectories of IA have not been studied in children with CP. In the present study, we evaluated and compared the mean trajectory of IA from 7 to 14 years of age in children with (n = 328; 47.6% girls) and without (n = 320; 51.3% girls) early clinically significant CP us

Waiting impulsivity: a distinctive feature of ADHD neuropsychology?

Impulsivity is a core feature of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It has been conceptualized in a number of different ways. In the current article, we examine how the new concept of "waiting impulsivity", which refers to premature responding before a scheduled target appears, adds to our understanding of impulsivity in ADHD. Sixty children (8-12 years old; 30 ADHD; 30 typically developing controls) completed the 4-choice serial reaction time task, a measure of waiting impulsivity, alongside tasks measuring inhibitory control and temporal discounting and questionnaires measuring

A naturalistic exploratory study of the impact of demographic, phenotypic and comorbid features in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the impact of gender, age at onset, phenotype and comorbidity in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in children. In this naturalistic study we consider these characteristics of OCD in the framework of the 4 OCD phenotypes (contamination/cleaning, order/symmetry, obsessions/checking and hoarding) proposed by Leckman et al. SAMPLING AND METHODS: A consecutive series of 257 patients aged 13.6 +/- 2.8 years, diagnosed using a DSM-IV-based clinical interview (Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Age Children - Present and Li

Narcissistic traits as predictors of emotional problems in children with oppositional defiant disorder: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Children's self-views encompass two independent dimensions: self-esteem and narcissism, which recently have received growing attention from researchers and clinicians. The current study sought to test whether these dimensions might predict the developmental course of children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder diagnosis. METHOD: The sample (N = 64, M age = 10.1 years, 57 boys) included children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder diagnosis. We examined longitudinal relationships between self-views (both self-esteem and narcissism) and parent-reported internalizing and externalizing

Distilling Common History and Practice Elements to Inform Dissemination: Hanf-Model BPT Programs as an Example.

There is a shift in evidence-based practice toward an understanding of the treatment elements that characterize empirically supported interventions in general and the core components of specific approaches in particular. The evidence base for behavioral parent training (BPT) and the standard of care for early-onset disruptive behavior disorders (oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder), which frequently co-occur with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, are well established, yet an ahistorical, program-specific lens tells little regarding how leaders, University of Oregon Medic

Childhood behavior problems and adolescent sexual risk behavior: familial confounding in the child and adolescent twin study in Sweden (CATSS).

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have found associations between childhood behavior problems and adolescent sexual risk behavior. Using a quasi-experimental approach, we examined the extent to which this association may be due to between-family differences (i.e., unmeasured familial confounds) not adequately explored in prior research. METHODS: We used data from a longitudinal, population-based cohort of young twins in Sweden (first assessment: age 9 or 12 years; second assessment: age 15; n = 2,388). We explored the nature of the association between symptom scores for attention deficit hyperactiv

Community-Delivered Collaborative and Proactive Solutions and Parent Management Training for Oppositional Youth: A Randomized Trial.

The aim of this study was to examine the relative effectiveness of Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) and Parent Management Training (PMT) for youth with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) in a community setting. Based on a semistructured diagnostic interview, 160 youth with ODD (ages 7-14; 72% male; ethnicity representative of the wider Australian population) were randomized to CPS (n = 81) or PMT (n = 79) for up to 16 weekly sessions. The primary hypothesis was that participants in the CPS group, treated in a community setting, would exhibit significant improvement in ODD, equivale

[Interrater reliability for diagnosis in adults of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiant disorder using K-SADS-E].

The diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) in adults lacks adequate assessment instruments. The aim of this investigation is to evaluate the interrater reliability of the sections of K-SADS-E adapted for the diagnosis of these disorders among adults. The adaptations were limited to asking questions directly to the patient, investigation of a later onset of symptoms, and asking for adult specific symptoms. Six trained raters scored 16 recorded interviews. Kappa coefficients were 1.00 for ADHD diagnosis in the past, 0.91 for subtype i

Temperament and Common Disruptive Behavior Problems in Preschool.

The study evaluated trait associations with common Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), during an understudied developmental period: Preschool. Participants were 109 children ages 3 to 6 and their families. DBD symptoms were available via parent and teacher/caregiver report on the Disruptive Behavior Rating Scale. Traits were measured using observational coding paradigms, and parent and examiner report on the Child Behavior Questionnaire and the California Q-Sort. The DBD groups exhibited significantly hig

Variability in emotional/behavioral problems in boys with oppositional defiant disorder or conduct disorder: the role of arousal.

It is often reported that children with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) or conduct disorder (CD) are under-aroused. However, the evidence is mixed, with some children with ODD/CD displaying high arousal. This has led to the hypothesis that different profiles of arousal dysfunction may exist within children with ODD/CD. This knowledge could explain variability within children with ODD/CD, both in terms of specific types of aggression as well as comorbid symptoms (e.g., other emotional/behavioral problems). We measured heart rate variability (HRV), heart rate (HR) and skin conductance level

Impulsivity and Early Initiation of Sexual Behaviors in Adolescents with Externalizing Disorders.

Impulsivity, a multidimensional construct characterized by rash decision-making and difficulty delaying gratification, is a trait of externalizing disorders (e.g., attention-deficit/hyperactivity, disruptive, oppositional defiant, and conduct disorders) and has been associated with risk-taking behaviors. However, its association with risky sexual behaviors in this population remains limited. This observational study examined the association between impulsivity and early sexual behaviors in 96 adolescents (male n = 63) with externalizing disorders. Impulsivity at baseline was assessed using the

Assessment-derived treatment of children's disruptive behavior disorders.

The objective of assessment-derived treatment is to formulate therapeutic interventions that are based upon an identification of the variables that control the occurrence of clinical disorders. This article presents a discussion of several concerns related to the process of assessment-derived treatment of children's disruptive behavior disorders (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder). The use of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III-R), diagnostic interviewing, behavior checklists, and direct observational method
