Evidence for autonomic nervous system imbalance in women with irritable bowel syndrome.

Autonomic nervous system function was assessed in women with and without irritable bowel syndrome using frequency domain measures of heart rate variability. Women were interviewed and placed into the irritable bowel syndrome (N = 25) group based on history of diagnosis and self-report of current gastrointestinal symptoms. Women in the control group denied a history of chronic gastrointestinal symptoms (N = 15). Women were followed for one menstrual cycle with a symptom diary, and during mid-luteal phase they wore a Holter 24-hr electrocardiograph monitor. Women with irritable bowel syndrome de…

Cardiac autonomic nervous system activity in obese and never-obese young men.

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity in age-matched, weight-stable, free-living, ad libitum-fed, obese (OB) and never-obese (NO) young men (body mass index means [SD], 38.5 [3.9] and 22.0 [1.7], respectively) was evaluated by sequential blockade of cardiac autonomic innervation with weight-adjusted doses of parasympathetic (atropine) and sympathetic (esmolol) blockers so as to produce maximal effects on heart rate. Change in heart period (interbeat interval) from baseline, induced by atropine, defined parasympathetic control (PC), and the subsequent change, after esmolol administration, def…

Autonomic nervous system and cardiac involvement in familial amyloidosis, Finnish type (FAF).

Familial amyloidosis, Finnish type (FAF), is a gelsolin-related inherited systemic amyloidosis. We report autonomic nervous system and cardiac findings in a study of 30 FAF patients (18 females, 12 males aged 27-74 years; mean 53.9 years). Cardiovascular reflex tests showed a significant decrease in heart rate variation in FAF patients compared with healthy controls. Orthostatic hypotension was found in 9 of 28 FAF patients, but only in 3 of 69 controls. Signs of amyloid cardiopathy were rare at clinical examination and in radio-, echocardio- and electrocardiographic examinations. Histological…

Autonomic nervous system: an integrative regulator in circadian rhythm of blood pressure.

Circadian rhythms, fundamental biological oscillations aligning physiological functions with the Earth's 24-h cycle, profoundly influence blood pressure (BP) regulation. In this review, we first consolidates current understanding the systemic and cellular organizations of circadian clocks. Next, we delve into the intricate relationship between BP and circadian rhythms, examining how environmental cues like light, sleep, and diet disrupt these rhythms, leading to BP disorders. Crucially, we emphasize the ANS's central role as a dynamic integrator, mediating the influence of central and peripher

Autonomic nervous system and gastrointestinal manifestations with an emphasis on gastric dysfunction.

Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are frequent in disorders that involve the autonomic nervous system (ANS) or the enteric neuromuscular apparatus. Although dysfunction may occur anywhere along the alimentary tract, gastric manifestations are often the most clinically visible 'end-organ' expression of autonomic disease because they drive nausea, vomiting, early satiety, postprandial distress, malnutrition risk, and impaired drug absorption. In this invited review, we summarize the organization of the GI neuromuscular apparatus, emphasizing how intrinsic (enteric) circuitry and extrinsic sympathet…

Silence and its effects on the autonomic nervous system: A systematic review.

This systematic review explores the influence of silence on the autonomic nervous system. The Polyvagal Theory has been used as a reference model to describe the autonomic nervous system by explaining its role in emotional regulation, social engagement, and adaptive physiological responses. PubMed, Scopus, PsycInfo, EMBASE, and Google Scholar were systematically searched up until July 2023 for relevant studies. The literature search yielded 511 results, and 37 studies were eventually included in this review. Silence affects the autonomic nervous system differently based on whether it is inner …

Investigating the development of the autonomic nervous system in infancy through pupillometry.

We aim to investigate early developmental trajectories of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) as indexed by the pupillary light reflex (PLR) in infants with (i.e. preterm birth, feeding difficulties, or siblings of children with autism spectrum disorder) and without (controls) increased likelihood for atypical ANS development. We used eye-tracking to capture the PLR in 216 infants in a longitudinal follow-up study spanning 5 to 24 months of age, and linear mixed models to investigate effects of age and group on three PLR parameters: baseline pupil diameter, latency to constriction and relative …

Autonomic nervous system involvement in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy: a literature review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although dysautonomia is a well-recognized complication of acute demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, it is rarely reported and evaluated in chronic demyelinating neuropathies. The purpose of this review is to search and synthesize the current literature on the prevalence and type of autonomic dysfunction (AD) in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP). METHODS: PubMed and Web of Science were searched for studies reporting AD in CIDP. RESULTS: Twelve studies, including 346 patients with CIDP, were found eligible for the review. Seven studies use

Autonomic nervous system modulation during self-induced non-ordinary states of consciousness.

Self-induced cognitive trance (SICT) is a voluntary non-ordinary state of consciousness characterized by a lucid yet narrowed awareness of the external surroundings. It involves a hyper-focused immersive experience of flow, expanded inner imagery, modified somatosensory processing, and an altered perception of self and time. SICT is gaining attention due to its potential clinical applications. Similar states of non-ordinary state of consciousness, such as meditation, hypnosis, and psychedelic experiences, have been reported to induce changes in the autonomic nervous system. However, the functi…

We report the case of an elderly woman who developed recurring episodes of unexplained cardiocirculatory arrest. The index event appeared du … of ischemia or significant troponin levels, suggest the action of cardioprotective reflexes of the autonomic nervous system. Coronary artery disease is a common source. Attention to cardioprotective reflexes should be taken in the case of unexplained cardiac arrest without overt reasons. We recommend performing coronary angiography to exclude significant coronary stenosi …

Contemporary Understanding of the Central Autonomic Nervous System in Fetal-Neonatal Transition.

THE CRITICAL ROLE OF THE CENTRAL AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM IN FETAL-NEONATAL TRANSITION: Sarah B. Mulkey, Adre dú Plessis Seminars in Pediatric Neurology Volume 28, December 2018, Pages 29-37 The objective of this article is to understand the complex role of the central autonomic nervous system in normal and complicated fetal-neonatal transition and how autonomic nervous system dysfunction can lead to brain injury. The central autonomic nervous system supports coordinated fetal transitional cardiovascular, respiratory, and endocrine responses to provide safe transition of the fetus at delivery.…
