Systematic literature review of bacterial larvicides Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis and Bacillus (Lysinibacillus) sphaericus for malaria control in Africa.

A systematic review of the scientific literature was conducted with the objective of finding evidence on the contribution of microbial larvicides, Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis and Bacillus sphaericus, in clinical malaria burden in Africa. A systematic literature search was carried out using databases PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ProQuest, and BASE, and Google, and Google Scholar search engines. All results were screened for duplicates and assessed for eligibility. Relevant data were extracted, and a quality assessment was performed using the CONSORT 2010 checklist, funnel plot, an…

Intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin with interferon-alpha versus intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin for treating non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer.

BACKGROUND: Despite local therapies, commonly transurethral resection (TUR) followed by adjuvant treatments, non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) has a high rate of recurrence and progression. Intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) has been shown to reduce recurrence and progression in people with NMIBC following TUR, however many people do not respond to treatment, have recurrence shortly after, or cannot tolerate standard-dose therapy. The potential for synergistic antitumour activity of interferon (IFN)-alpha (α) and BCG provides some rationale for combination therapy for people …

Risk of Bacillus cereus in Relation to Rice and Derivatives.

Rice is a very popular food throughout the world and the basis of the diet of the citizens of many countries. It is used as a raw material for the preparation of many complex dishes in which different ingredients are involved. Rice, as a consequence of their cultivation, harvesting, and handling, is often contaminated with spores of Bacillus cereus, a ubiquitous microorganism found mainly in the soil. B. cereus can multiply under temperature conditions as low as 4 °C in foods that contain rice and have been cooked or subjected to treatments that do not produce commercial sterility. B. cereus p…

The Bacillus cereus Food Infection as Multifactorial Process.

The ubiquitous soil bacterium Bacillus cereus presents major challenges to food safety. It is responsible for two types of food poisoning, the emetic form due to food intoxication and the diarrheal form emerging from food infections with enteropathogenic strains, also known as toxico-infections, which are the subject of this review. The diarrheal type of food poisoning emerges after production of enterotoxins by viable bacteria in the human intestine. Basically, the manifestation of the disease is, however, the result of a multifactorial process, including B. cereus prevalence and survival in …

Clostridium welchii and Bacillus cereus infection and intoxication.

Clostridium welchii type A is a common agent of food poisoning when allowed to proliferate to large numbers in cooked foods, usually meat an … gnostic factor. Important preventive measures are rapid cooling and cold storage to prevent growth. Bacillus cereus is an aerobic sporulating organism commonly found in cereals. Outbreaks described from Europe have a different aetiology with regard to food vehicles, incubation period and symptoms from those that have been reported recently in the U.K. from …

Harnessing an endophytic Bacillus strain closely related to Bacillus velezensis for biocontrol of twig blight in bayberry caused by Pestalotiopsis versicolor.

BACKGROUND: Twig blight disease caused by Pestalotiopsis versicolor threatens bayberry (Myrica rubra) cultivation in China, prompting extensive reliance on chemical fungicides with limited long-term efficacy. This study investigated the potential of endophytic bacteria isolated from bayberry leaves as sustainable biocontrol agents against this pathogenic fungus. RESULTS: An endophytic bacterium designated strain Bay9 was isolated from healthy bayberry leaves and identified as a Bacillus sp. closely related to Bacillus velezensis based on 16 S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Bay9 exhibited strong…

Gut-Centric Multi-System Regulation by Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus natto: A Review of Their Probiotic Functions in Nutrition, Immunity, and Metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Compared with lactic acid-producing probiotics, spore-producing probiotics such as Bacillus subtilis (BS) and Bacillus natto (BN) exhibited superior metabolic capacity and stress resistance and are more suitable for industrial applications. However, limited understanding of their nutritional and intestinal health mechanisms has constrained their food potential. OBJECTIVES: This review systematically expounded on the 'triple mechanism' of BS and BN and their effects on intestinal nutrition, immunity and metabolism benefit for the first time. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Scopus, We…

Synergizing Bacillus halotolerans, Pseudomonas sihuiensis and Bacillus atrophaeus with folic acid for enhanced drought resistance in wheat by metabolites and antioxidants.

Drought stress imposes a serious challenge to cultivate wheat, restricting its growth. Drought reduces the capability of plant to uptake essential nutrients. This causes stunted growth, development and yield. Traditional ways to increase wheat growth under drought stress have shortcomings. Using plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) has proved feasible and eco-friendly way to enhance wheat growth even under the drought stress. Combining PGPR in consortiums further boosts up their effects. In this study, we have checked the efficacy of drought-tolerant Bacillus halotolerans, Pseudomonas s…

Get to Know Your Neighbors: Characterization of Close Bacillus anthracis Isolates and Toxin Profile Diversity in the Bacillus cereus Group.

Unexpected atypical isolates of Bacillus cereus s.l. occasionally challenge conventional microbiology and even the most advanced techniques for anthrax detection. For anticipating and gaining trust, 65 isolates of Bacillus cereus s.l. of diverse origin were sequenced and characterized. The BTyper3 tool was used for assignation to genomospecies B. mosaicus (34), B. cereus s.s (29) and B. toyonensis (2), as well as virulence factors and toxin profiling. None of them carried any capsule or anthrax-toxin genes. All harbored the non-hemolytic toxin nheABC and sphygomyelinase spH genes, whereas 41 (…

Evolution of resistance to the Bacillus sphaericus Bin toxin is phenotypically masked by combination with the mosquitocidal proteins of Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis.

Two insecticidal bacteria are used as larvicides to control larvae of nuisance and vector mosquitoes in many countries, Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. israelensis and B. sphaericus. Field studies show both are effective, but serious resistance, as high as 50 000-fold, has evolved where B. sphaericus is used against Culex mosquitoes. To improve efficacy and deal with even greater potential problems of resistance, we previously developed several recombinant larvicidal bacteria that combine the best mosquitocidal proteins of these bacteria. In the present study, we report laboratory selection studie…

The genome sequence of Bacillus cereus ATCC 10987 reveals metabolic adaptations and a large plasmid related to Bacillus anthracis pXO1.

We sequenced the complete genome of Bacillus cereus ATCC 10987, a non-lethal dairy isolate in the same genetic subgroup as Bacillus anthracis. Comparison of the chromosomes demonstrated that B.cereus ATCC 10987 was more similar to B.anthracis Ames than B.cereus ATCC 14579, while containing a number of unique metabolic capabilities such as urease and xylose utilization and lacking the ability to utilize nitrate and nitrite. Additionally, genetic mechanisms for variation of capsule carbohydrate and flagella surface structures were identified. Bacillus cereus ATCC 10987 contains a single large pl…

A small (2.4 Mb) Bacillus cereus chromosome corresponds to a conserved region of a larger (5.3 Mb) Bacillus cereus chromosome.

We have determined the sizes of the chromosomes of six Bacillus cereus strains (range 2.4-4.3 Mb) and constructed a physical map of the smallest B. cereus chromosome (2.4 Mb). This map was compared to those of the chromosomes of four B. cereus strains and one B. thuringiensis strain previously determined to be 5.4-6.3 Mb. Of more than 50 probes, 30 were localized to the same half of the larger B. cereus and B. thuringiensis chromosomes. All 30 were also present on the small chromosome. Twenty of the probes present on the other half of the larger chromosomes were either present on extrachromoso…

Food-bacteria interplay: pathometabolism of emetic Bacillus cereus.

Bacillus cereus is a Gram-positive endospore forming bacterium known for its wide spectrum of phenotypic traits, enabling it to occupy diverse ecological niches. Although the population structure of B. cereus is highly dynamic and rather panmictic, production of the emetic B. cereus toxin cereulide is restricted to strains with specific genotypic traits, associated with distinct environmental habitats. Cereulide is an ionophoric dodecadepsipeptide that is produced non-ribosomally by an enzyme complex with an unusual modular structure, named cereulide synthetase (Ces non-ribosomal peptide synth…

Disseminated Bacillus Calmette-Guérin Infection with Rhabdomyolysis, Acute Kidney Injury, and Interstitial Pneumonia after Bacillus Calmette-Guérin Intravesical Instillation Therapy.

A 79-year-old man experienced a fever and immobility after receiving 6 doses of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) intravesical instillation therapy for bladder tumor. Rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney injury occurred; therefore, hemodialysis was performed. His kidney function was restored. However, he exhibited an inflammatory reaction that was resistant to broad-spectrum antibiotics and eventually developed interstitial pneumonia. Corticosteroid treatment partially relieved the symptoms of interstitial pneumonia, although disuse syndrome persisted. He was diagnosed with disseminated BCG infection …

Chemodiversity of cereulide, the emetic toxin of Bacillus cereus.

Food-borne intoxications are increasingly caused by the dodecadepsipeptide cereulide, the emetic toxin produced by Bacillus cereus. As such intoxications pose a health risk to humans, a more detailed understanding on the chemodiversity of this toxin is mandatory for the reliable risk assessment of B. cereus toxins in foods. Mass spectrometric screening now shows a series of at least 18 cereulide variants, among which the previously unknown isocereulides A-G were determined for the first time by means of UPLC-TOF MS and ion-trap MS(n) sequencing, (13)C-labeling experiments, and post-hydrolytic …

The application of multiplex PCR and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism for differentiation of Bacillus anthracis from other Bacillus spp.

INTRODUCTION: Bacillus anthracis causes an infectious disease called anthrax. Herbivores are more susceptible to the disease than omnivores, carnivores and humans. Grazing animals are the highest-risk group, and among them, anthrax outbreaks have extremely high fatality rates and impose heavy costs, besides posing a grave zoonotic risk. The aim of the study was the application and evaluation of simultaneous use of multiplex PCR and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) allowing the differentiation of strains of the B. anthracis species from other species of the Bacillus genus…
