BACKGROUND: The optimal timing and technique of breast reconstruction in patients who may require postmastectomy radiation therapy are controversial. To help surgeons make the best decisions, the authors reviewed the recent literature on this topic.
METHODS: The authors searched the MEDLINE database for studies of radiation therapy and breast reconstruction with most patients treated after 1985 and mean follow-up of more than 1 year. Forty-nine articles were reviewed.
RESULTS: Even with the latest prosthetic materials and modern radiation delivery techniques, the complication rate for implan

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Radiation-induced dysphagia can cause life-threatening complications including aspiration pneumonia. Consequently, studies have attempted to limit the radiation dose to the swallowing muscles to prevent radiation-induced dysphagia. However, data identifying the specific swallowing muscles associated with post-radiation dysphagia are lacking. Therefore, this case-control study aimed to identify the swallowing muscles whose radiotherapy-related damage is likely to cause radiation-induced dysphagia.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 53 patients with head and neck

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced heart disease (RIHD) is one of the most serious complications of radiation therapy (RT) for thoracic tumors, and new interventions are needed for its prevention and treatment. Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) from stem cells have attracted much attention due to their ability to repair injury. However, the role of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (UCMSC)-derived sEVs in protecting cardiac organoids from radiation-induced injury and the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown.
METHODS: A radiation-induced cardiac organoid injury model was established by us

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy or accidental exposure to ionizing radiation causes severe damage of healthy intestinal tissues. Intestinal barrier function is highly sensitive to ionizing radiation, and loss of epithelial integrity results in mucosal inflammation, bacterial translocation, and endotoxemia. Few studies have of epithelial integrity as a therapeutic target to treat radiation toxicity. Here, we examined the effects of pravastatin (PS) and the molecular mechanisms underlying epithelial integrity on radiation-induced enteropathy.
METHODS: The radio-mitigative effects of PS were evaluated

BACKGROUND: In recent years, camptocormia and dropped head syndrome (DHS) have gained attention as particular forms of movement disorders. Camptocormia presents with involuntary forward flexion of the thoracolumbar spine that typically increases during walking or standing and may severely impede walking ability. DHS is characterized by weakness of the neck extensors and a consecutive inability to extend the neck; in severe cases the head is fixed in a "chin to chest position." Many diseases may underlie these conditions, and there have been some reports about radiation-induced camptocormia and

BACKGROUND: Patients with Inflammatory Bowel disease (IBD) are frequently exposed to diagnostic medical radiation for the diagnosis and evaluation of their disease. Despite increasing awareness of the potentially serious downstream effects, few studies have quantified radiation exposure in IBD patients.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 280 consecutive patients attending IBD clinics at our hospital. All incidences of diagnostic medical radiation from initial diagnosis until 30 June 2010 inclusive were recorded. The radiation dose for each procedure was obtained from standardized

BACKGROUND: Ionizing radiation is a cause of cancer. This paper examines the effects of radiation dose and age at exposure on the incidence of brain cancer using data from the Life Span Study (LSS) of atomic bomb survivors.
METHODS: The Radiation Effects Research Foundation website provides demographic details of the LSS population, estimated radiation doses at time of bomb in 1945, person years of follow-up and incident cancers from 1958 to 1998. We modelled brain cancer incidence using background-stratified Poisson regression, and compared the excess relative risk (ERR) per Gray (Gy) of bra

BACKGROUND: Amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) is gaining popularity for clinical and research purposes, particularly since the US Food and Drug Administration approval of anti-amyloid therapies. While the benefits of PET imaging in clinical care outweigh the risks associated with radiation exposure, the risks from elective radiation exposure in research should be carefully considered. Currently, no published or widely used guidelines consider prior radiation exposure as part of the eligibility determination for prospective participants in a clinical trial that includes ionizing radiat

BACKGROUND: The major goal of this study was to determine whether radiation significantly alters bone marrow-derived cell distribution and mass of sensitive organs after challenge with lipopolysaccharide (LPS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: C57BL/6 mice were exposed whole-body to 0 or 3 gray (Gy) gamma-radiation (60Co) and injected intraperitoneally with 0.1 ml saline or 1 mg/kg LPS (E. coli serotype 0111:B4) 10 days later. Subsets from each group were euthanized at 60 min and 1, 7 and 14 days post-injection for analyses.
RESULTS: Body mass was low 1 day after LPS, especially in irradiated animals.

PURPOSE: The respiratory disease COVID-19 reached global pandemic status in 2020. Excessive inflammation is believed to result in the most severe symptoms and death from this disease. Because treatment options for patients with severe COVID-19 related pulmonary symptoms remain limited, whole-lung low-dose radiation therapy is being evaluated as an anti-inflammatory modality. However, there is concern about the long-term risks associated with low-dose pulmonary irradiation. To help quantify the benefit-risk balance of low-dose radiation therapy for COVID-19, we estimated radiation-induced lifet

BACKGROUND: Patients with incurable but not-yet-biopsied cancers sometimes require urgent palliative radiation. However, wait-times for biopsy procedures and pathologic results can delay treatment, with significant consequences to patient quality of life and/or the chance of irreversible cancer complications. There is no prospective data to guide empirical decision-making in these urgent, palliative contexts.
METHODS: In this prospective single-arm pragmatic clinical trial, we will enrol 48 patients with incurable cancer where a biopsy is delaying urgent palliative radiation. Patients will re
