Anaerobic bacteria are rare but important cause of otogenic brain abscess. Improved patient management techniques and early clinical and laboratory diagnosis of otogenic infections are necessary to reduce the risk of intracranial complications. Here we present a case of recurrent pyogenic brain abscess caused by Bacteroides fragilis secondary to otitis media.

Bacteroides pyogenes is a Gram-negative obligate anaerobe, saccharolytic, non-motile, non-pigment-producing and non-spore-forming rod. Reports of human infections caused by B. pyogenes are scarce, with approximately 30 cases documented in scientific literature. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics of 8 different patients and to study the in vitro antibiotic susceptibility of the strains, as well as to evaluate the in vivo activity of the prescribed treatments. We conducted a descriptive retrospective study by searching all B. pyogenes isolates from January 2010 to

The depletion of Bacteroides in the gut is closely correlated with the progression of alcoholic liver disease (ALD). This study aimed to identify Bacteroides strains with protective effects against ALD and evaluate the synergistic effects of Bacteroides and pectin in this disease. Mice were fed Lieber-DeCarli alcohol diet to establish an experimental ALD model and pre-treated with 4 Bacteroides strains. The severity of the liver injury, hepatic steatosis, and inflammation was evaluated through histological and biochemical assays. We found that Bacteroides fragilis ATCC25285 had the best protec

Since the beginning of the 20th century, bacteriophages (phages), i.e., viruses that infect bacteria, have been used as antimicrobial agents for treating various infections. Phage preparations targeting a number of bacterial pathogens are still in use in the post-Soviet states and are experiencing a revival in the Western world. However, phages have never been used to treat diseases caused by Bacteroides fragilis, the leading agent cultured in anaerobic abscesses and postoperative peritonitis. Enterotoxin-producing strains of B. fragilis have been associated with the development of inflammator

Bacteroides fragilis is the most frequent opportunistic pathogen isolated from anaerobic infections. However, there is a paucity of information regarding the genetic and molecular aspects of gene expression of its virulence factors during extra-intestinal infections. A potential virulence factor that has received little attention is the ability of B. fragilis to produce hemolysins. In this study, an implanted perforated table tennis "ping-pong" ball was used as an intra-abdominal artificial abscess model in the rat. This procedure provided sufficient infected exudate for gene expression studie

BACKGROUND: Previous reports of recurrent intra-abdominal abcess formation after the laparoscopic treatment of perforated acute appendicitis led us to investigate the possible effects of gas insufflation on the spread of infection. We previously showed that Escherichia coli counts were significantly higher in a laparoscopy group that underwent carbon dioxide (CO2) insufflation than in control and laparotomy groups. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of intra-abdominal CO2 and nitrous oxide (N2O) insufflation on anaerobic bacterial growth in a rat model.

The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the newer beta-lactam antibiotic, imipenem, were compared with those of cefoxitin, cefotetan, penicillin, amoxycillin, ticarcillin and metronidazole against 114 clinical isolates of the Bacteroides fragilis group of anaerobic organisms. The ability of clavulanic acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor, to potentiate the in vitro activity of amoxycillin and ticarcillin was also studied. Using an agar dilution technique we found imipenem to be the most active beta-lactam antibiotic tested having an MIC50 of 0.25 microgram/ml and inhibiting all isolates at

Gut-resident bacteria must withstand membrane-disrupting stresses, such as bile acids, to persist in the intestinal environment. The Bacteroidota are a dominant phylum of the human gut microbiota. However, the genes responsible for the synthesis of membrane lipids in this phylum remain relatively uncharacterized. Bacteroides fragilis is a prevalent member of this phylum and encodes two predicted cardiolipin synthase family proteins, ClsA and ClsB. We previously identified both cls genes as bile-acid fitness factors in B. fragilis P207, but the contributions of clsA and clsB to cell physiology

The goals of this study were to develop a model to study host-pathogen interactions in primary human colon organoids and to test the hypothesis that Bacteroides fragilis toxin (BFT-2) secreted in outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) modulates mucosal immunity and CFTR Cl⁻ secretion. Since Bacteroides species reside in mucus, OMVs are likely to represent a mechanism of communication between Bacteroides and the host. Two strains of Bacteroides were studied: enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF), which produces BFT-2, and the non-toxigenic Bacteroides fragilis strain NCTC 9343 (NTBF), which does

Although bile acid-mediated microbiome-host interactions are known to shape gut microbial composition and function, the mechanisms by which bile acid stress influences microbial metabolic interactions remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the interaction between two key gut microbes, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron and Collinsella aerofaciens , under deoxycholic acid (DCA) stress. In anaerobic coculture, C. aerofaciens mitigated the inhibitory effects of DCA on B. thetaiotaomicron , primarily through DCA uptake from the medium, as confirmed by DCA quantification. Proteomic analysis show

Early childhood events, up to the age of two, are critical for the development of the microbiome and balanced immunity later in life. We investigated whether susceptibility to infections and microbiome resilience after antibiotic treatment are associated with key taxa in the early childhood microbiota. Therefore, we performed longitudinal microbiota analysis from stool samples of children within the German LoewenKIDS intensified subcohort. According to the exposure to antibiotic treatment, sample groups were defined as never-treated controls, 45-225 days pre-treatment (pre45-225), 0-30 days pr

In chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients under antiviral treatment, liver injury, as evidenced by elevated alanine transaminase (ALT), is associated with unfavorable outcomes and needs effective treatment. The interaction between gut microbiota and liver injury in CHB patients remains unclear. Using a case-control design, 28 cases with elevated ALT and 28 matched controls with normal ALT were randomly selected from CHB patients with viral control. Clinical characteristics were comparable between groups. Metagenomic sequencing revealed that Bacteroides fragilis was decreased in cases and exhibited

Cronobacter has attracted considerable attention due to its association with meningitis and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in newborns. Generally, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) facilitates bacterial translocation along with inflammatory responses as an endotoxin; however, the pathogenicity of Cronobacter LPS and the strategies to alleviate the toxicity were largely unknown. In this study, inflammatory responses were stimulated by intraperitoneal injection of Cronobacter malonaticus LPS into Sprague-Dawley young rats. Simultaneously, Bacteroides fragilis NCTC9343 were continuously fed through gavag

Consumption of a Western-type diet has been linked to gut-microbiota-mediated colon inflammation that constitutes a risk factor for colorectal cancer. A high salt diet (HSD) exacerbates IL-17A-induced inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease and other autoimmune diseases. Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF) is a gut commensal bacterium and reported to be a potent initiator of colitis via secretion of the Bacteroides fragilis toxin (BFT). BFT induces ectodomain cleavage of E-cadherin in colonic epithelial cells, consequently leading to cell rounding, epithelial barrier disruption, and

Spondylodiscitis with or without epidural abscess is a rare, although serious, complication after sacrocolpopexy. We present a case of an 81-year-old patient who developed anaerobic Bacteroides fragilis sacral spondylodiscitis with epidural abscess 18 weeks after laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy. Because of the patient’s old age, comorbidities, and further complications during hospitalization, she was treated conservatively with an early switch to oral antimicrobial therapy with good oral bioavailability. Because of retention of titanium bone anchors in the first sacral vertebra, oral antimicrobial

BACKGROUND: Bacteroides fragilis group organisms are the most frequently isolated anaerobes in human infections. Increasing resistance to various antimicrobial agents is a significant problem in choosing appropriate antimicrobial agents to treat anaerobic infections. Periodic monitoring of the regional resistance trends of B. fragilis group isolates is needed.
METHODS: A total of 466 nonduplicate clinical isolates of B. fragilis group organisms (276 B. fragilis, 106 Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, and 84 other B. fragilis group organisms) were collected during the 8-yr period from 1997 to 2004

The activity of MK-0826, a new carbapenem, against 309 Bacteroides fragilis group strains was investigated and compared with that of 11 other beta-lactam and 5 non-beta-lactam agents. MK-0826 showed excellent activity (MICs ranged from < or =0.06 to 4 microg/ml). The new carbapenem may be useful in the treatment of mixed anaerobic infections involving B. fragilis group strains.

Two standardized susceptibility test methods, a broth microdilution (BMD) and agar dilution (AD) method were performed on a total of 441 clinical isolates of anaerobes with ceftizoxime, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, cefoxitin, piperacillin, and metronidazole. Against the 339 strains of the Bacteroides fragilis group BMD minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were lower than those from AD testing for all the beta-lactams. Overall for the B. fragilis group and the beta-lactams, the mode MIC values were two- to 64-fold lower, and the MIC50 values two- to eightfold lower. Resistance rates were 1

The emergence of cells that produce IgG and IgA subclass antibodies to Bacteroides gingivalis (Porphyromonas gingivalis) fimbriae and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antigens was examined in mononuclear cells isolated from inflamed gingiva of different stages (slight, moderate or advanced) of adult periodontitis (AP). Antigen-specific IgM, IgG (including IgG1, IgG2, IgG3 and IgG4) and IgA (including IgA1 and IgA2) producing cells were enumerated by the ELISPOT assay and were compared with total Ig-producing cells of each isotype or subclass. In advanced AP, the B. gingivalis fimbriae-specific IgG- an

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is a complex, multifactorial disease heavily influenced by the gut-liver axis. While enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF) and its principal virulence factor, B. fragilis toxin (BFT)-a zinc-dependent metalloprotease-are well-known for disrupting intestinal barriers, their potential systemic impact on distant organs remains an emerging area of interest. Although various gut-derived factors contribute to hepatic inflammation, the precise molecular triggers that exacerbate the transition from simple steatosis to progressive fibrosis re
