Tuberculosis screening in an at-risk immigrant Hispanic population in Baltimore city: an academic health center/local health department partnership.

Tuberculosis (TB) is endemic and epidemic throughout the world. More people will die of TB this year then in any previous year in modern history. However, in the United States successful TB control programs have resulted in low morbidity and low mortality here. Globalization and immigration threatens this control potentially bringing the infection to a here-to-fore complacent United States. This article describes a unique partnership between a community health program of a School of Nursing and a local health department chest clinic to find, screen and treat a population of Hispanic immigrants

Factors and Perceptions Associated with Post-Pandemic Food Sourcing and Dietary Patterns among Urban Corner Store Customers in Baltimore, Maryland.

OBJECTIVE: Diet-related disease is rising, disproportionately affecting minority communities in which small food retail stores swamp supermarkets. Barriers to healthy food access were exacerbated by the pandemic. We examined the following: (1) individual- and household-level factors in a sample of Baltimore community members who regularly shop at corner stores and (2) how these factors are associated with indicators of dietary quality. DESIGN: Cross-sectional data were collected using an online survey to capture sociodemographics, anthropometrics, and food sourcing, spending, and consumption …

Geospatial Food Environment Exposure and Obesity Among Low Income Baltimore City Children: Associations Differ by Data Source and Processing Method.

Due to the high prevalence of childhood obesity, it is imperative to assess the relationship children's access to food retailers and obesity. However, the influence of methodological decisions on these associations has been understudied. We examined relationships between different measures of geospatial food environment (using 4 data sources, and 2 data processing methods), and BMI in a sample of low-income children in Baltimore, Maryland. The choice of data sources and data processing methods produced large differences in estimates of children's exposures to certain store types, such as super…

Sub-clinical anxiety and the onset of alcohol use disorders: longitudinal associations from the Baltimore ECA follow-up, 1981-2004.

The current study examines the longitudinal relationship between anxiety disorders in general, specific phobia in particular, and subsequent-onset alcohol use disorders in an adult population-based sample. In addition, the authors explore whether the hypothesized associations vary by gender. Approximately 23 years of data from the Baltimore Epidemiological Catchment Area Follow-up (N = 587) allow for the estimation of the development of incident alcohol use disorders in later life among those with anxiety disorders at the time of the baseline interview in 1981. Although baseline specific phobi…

Characteristics of patients with syphilis attending Baltimore STD clinics. Multiple high-risk subgroups and interactions with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Medical records of 341 patients with syphilis seen at a health department sexually transmitted disease clinic were reviewed to assess membership in high-risk subgroups and interactions with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. When compared with the entire clinic population, patients with syphilis tended to be older and were more likely to acknowledge intravenous drug use, more often had a history of syphilis, and, among men, were more often homosexually active. Half of the men with syphilis and one third of the women fell into one or more of these high-risk subgroups. Patients with s

Oral health conditions and domain-specific cognitive decline in older adults: evidence from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging 2005-2024.

BACKGROUND: While associations between poor oral health and cognitive impairment are documented, research on how different oral health conditions relate to specific cognitive measures remains limited. METHODS: Using data from 756 Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging 2005-2024 participants (mean age = 72.0 years, 52.5% women, 24.2% Black), we investigated the association between the first oral health assessment and subsequent cognitive decline across domains in older adults aged 60+ who were free of cognitive impairment at baseline over an average of 7.7 follow-up. Cognitive function was asse…

Perceptions of a community-based HIV/STI testing program among Black gay, bisexual, and other MSM in Baltimore: a qualitative analysis.

Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) are disproportionately affected by HIV and STIs. Safe Spaces 4 Sexual Health (SS4SH), a community-informed, status-neutral HIV/STI testing intervention combines online outreach via geo-social networking apps and social media with mobile van testing. During 2018-2019, we recruited 25 participants for interviews about their perceptions of SS4SH compared to clinic-based testing. Participants were aged 21-65 years (mean 35); 22 (88%) identified as Black/African American; 20 (80%) identified as gay; and 10 (40%) were living with HIV. In

Sexual transmission of hepatitis C virus among patients attending sexually transmitted diseases clinics in Baltimore--an analysis of 309 sex partnerships.

The prevalence of antibodies to hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV), the behavioral and laboratory-derived risk factors for anti-HCV, and the quantity and homology of HCV RNA were assessed among 1039 non-injection drug-using sexually transmitted disease (STD) patients representing 309 sex partnerships. Thirty-seven (7%) of 555 males and 19 (4%) of 484 females had anti-HCV. In logistic regression analyses, factors associated with anti-HCV included age (P < .001), greater numbers of lifetime sex partners (P = .023), human immunodeficiency virus infection (P < .001), Trichomonas infection (P < .001), ci

The epidemiology of psychiatrist-ascertained depression and DSM-III depressive disorders. Results from the Eastern Baltimore Mental Health Survey Clinical Reappraisal.

Psychiatrists used a semi-structured Standardized Psychiatric Examination method to examine 810 adults drawn from a probability sample of eastern Baltimore residents in 1981. Of the population, 5.9% was found to be significantly depressed. DSM-III major depression (MD) had a prevalence of 1.1% and 'non-major depression' (nMD), our collective term for the other depressive disorder categories in DSM-III, had a prevalence of 3.4%. The two types of depression differed by sex ratio, age-specific prevalence, symptom severity, symptom profiles, and family history of suicide. Analyses using a multiple…
