RF-EMF electromagnetic environment IN the West Bank, Palestine.

With the increase in the distribution of sources of electromagnetic fields in the environment, public exposure to non-ionizing radiation emitted from these sources will increase and change with time. This work aims at the evaluation of public exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields in the West Bank and compares this exposure with previous studies with a time interval difference of 11 years. Measurements of exposure were conducted in the outdoor environment in 149 locations using tri-axial E-field frequency-selective personal exposure meter EME SPY 140 enabling measurements of electri

Pressure and Pain: A Qualitative Pilot Study Describing the Complexity of Unhoused Women's Experiences with Reproductive Care.

INTRODUCTION: While there is extant literature surrounding barriers to reproductive care in the unhoused population-especially regarding access to contraception-little attention has been given to patient perspectives and the quality of care that is received. The unhoused population, which is disproportionately persons of color and low income, has a higher prevalence of psychiatric and physical disabilities. This is a population that has historically been a victim of eugenics and coercive practice. STUDY OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study is to qualitatively understand the experiences of curr

Motivations and deterrents toward blood donation in Kampala, Uganda.

Severe malaria, hemorrhage during childbirth, sickle cell anemia, injury from road accidents, and other medical conditions that necessitate blood transfusions affect thousands of Ugandans every year. However, only 0.3-0.5% of the population donates blood, which is less than half of the proportion recommended by the World Health Organization to maintain a sufficient supply in blood banks and health facilities. In January 2018, Uganda faced crisis level blood shortages, increasing preventable deaths in the country as patients lacked access to life-saving transfusions. To understand the factors t

The challenge of ensuring affordability, sustainability, consistency, and adaptability in the common metrics agenda.

Mental health research grapples with research waste and stunted field progression caused by inconsistent outcome measurement across studies and clinical settings, which means there is no common language for considering findings. Although recognising that no gold standard measures exist and that all existing measures are flawed in one way or another, anxiety and depression research is spearheading a common metrics movement to harmonise measurement, with several initiatives over the past 5 years recommending the consistent use of specific scales to allow read-across of measurements between studi

Incidence of Scaphoid Fractures and Associated Injuries at US Trauma Centers.

Backgound  The scaphoid is the most commonly fractured carpal bone and often presents as a diagnostic challenge. Fractures can often go unnoticed on initial radiographic evaluation and clinical presentation can vary significantly among patients. Awareness of high-risk cohorts assists practitioners in making the appropriate clinical diagnosis of acute scaphoid fracture. Materials and Methods  The National Trauma Data Bank is the world's largest trauma data repository. Utilizing the 2016 public use file, we isolated scaphoid fractures by anatomic fracture location by utilizing International Clas

Sickle Cell Clinical Research and Intervention Program (SCCRIP): A lifespan cohort study for sickle cell disease progression from the pediatric stage into adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Previous natural history studies have advanced the understanding of sickle cell disease (SCD), but generally have not included sufficient lifespan data or investigation of the role of genetics in clinical outcomes, and have often occurred before the widespread use of disease-modifying therapies, such as hydroxyurea and chronic erythrocyte transfusions. To further advance knowledge of SCD, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital established the Sickle Cell Clinical Research and Intervention Program (SCCRIP), to conduct research in a clinically evaluated cohort of individuals with SCD

A 30-month worksite-based lifestyle program to promote cardiovascular health in middle-aged bank employees: Design of the TANSNIP-PESA randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. With atherosclerosis as the underlying cause for many CVD events, prevention or reduction of subclinical atherosclerotic plaque burden (SAPB) through a healthier lifestyle may have substantial public health benefits. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to describe the protocol of a randomized controlled trial investigating the effectiveness of a 30-month worksite-based lifestyle program aimed to promote cardiovascular health in participants having a high or a low degree of SAPB compared with standard care. METHODS: We

Accelerated epigenetic aging in brain is associated with pre-mortem HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders.

HIV infection leads to age-related conditions in relatively young persons. HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) are considered among the most prevalent of these conditions. To study the mechanisms underlying this disorder, researchers need an accurate method for measuring biological aging. Here, we apply a recently developed measure of biological aging, based on DNA methylation, to the study of biological aging in HIV+ brains. Retrospective analysis of tissue bank specimens and pre-mortem data was carried out. Fifty-eight HIV+ adults underwent a medical and neurocognitive evaluation

Physical performance tests for people with spinal pain--sensitivity to change.

OBJECTIVE: The sensitivity to change for six physical performance tests for assessing impairments and activity limitations in persons with spinal pain was examined. METHOD: Eighty men and 106 women with long-term spinal pain participating in a randomized controlled study went through the tests on inclusion in the study, and were then invited to follow-up tests after 5 weeks and 6 months. The tests were a 'step-on-stool test', three gait tests and two lifting tests (PILE tests). Sensitivity to change was examined by relating changes in physical performance to self-rated concepts assumed to ref

Family-led post-ICU discharge intervention for tracheostomized patients in India: Feasibility and formative impact evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Survival after critical illness is increasing, but many patients remain chronically critically ill (CCI), dependent on tracheostomy and ongoing care. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), long-term facilities are scarce, costly, and often excluded from insurance, leading to prolonged ICU stays, hospital-acquired complications, and constrained bed capacity. Family-centred discharge interventions may provide a safe, cost-conscious alternative, but evidence on feasibility, acceptability, and implementation success in LMICs is limited. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods form

Overview: diagnostic tests for viral infections transmitted by blood.

The risk of transmitting viral infections by transfusion today is quite remote. The many, sensitive, diagnostic tests in place, when applied to the blood of volunteer, unpaid (unremunerated), unpressured donors who are also carefully evaluated at the time of donation, make blood and blood component transfusions very safe. A number of sensitive laboratory tests are performed on each unit of donated blood and plasma to reduce the risk of transmission of hepatitis viruses and retroviruses from asymptomatic donors to transfusion recipients. With the tests, we hope to catch otherwise undetectable i

Epithelial and mesenchymal stem cells from the umbilical cord lining membrane.

Intense scientific research over the past two decades has yielded much knowledge about embryonic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow, as well as epithelial stem cells from the skin and cornea. However, the billions of dollars spent in this research have not overcome the fundamental difficulties intrinsic to these stem cell strains related to ethics (embryonic stem cells), as well as to technical issues such as accessibility, ease of cell selection and cultivation, and expansion/mass production, while maintaining consistency of cell stemness (all of the stem cell strains already
