Protein kinase C and diacylglycerol content in basilar arteries during experimental cerebral vasospasm in the dog.

Sixteen dogs were entered into a study of the double subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) model of cerebral vasospasm. Six animals were sacrificed 72 hours after the first experimental SAH, and the remaining 10 animals were killed 72 hours after the second experimental SAH; ten additional animals served as controls. Basilar arteries were rapidly excised from the dogs and frozen. Multiple segments of the frozen arteries were analyzed independently for total protein and 1,2-diacylglycerol (DAG) content, which averaged 3.17 (+/- 0.27 standard error of the mean; SEM) pmol DAG/microgram protein for all 25

Histopathological findings in the inner ear caused by measles.

An otopathological analysis of three cases of viral labyrinthitis was performed. Six temporal bones cut in serial sections were available for this study. According to the degree of degenerative changes in various parts of the inner ear two types of morphologically distinct labyrinthitis after measles are presented: the first one with the port of entrance through the internal auditory meatus and characterized by, first and most significantly, changes in the spiral ganglion cells; and the second, as described previously by Lindsay, with the port of entrance of the virus in the inner ear through

The effect of a precursor on growth of forward masking.

This study examined the effect of an on-frequency precursor on growth-of-masking (GOM) functions measured using an off-frequency masker. The signal was a 6-ms, 4-kHz tone. A GOM function was measured using a 40-ms, 2.8-kHz tone (the off-frequency masker). GOM functions were then measured with an on-frequency, fixed level precursor presented before the off-frequency masker. The precursor was 50 or 60 dB SPL, and 160 ms in duration. For the 60-dB SPL precursor, a 40-ms duration was also used. Two-line functions were fit to the GOM data to estimate the basilar membrane input-output function. The …

The effect of noise bandwidth on the contralateral suppression of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the bandwidth or loudness of a contralateral stimulus is the most important factor in evo … t occurred because the WB noise has greater effective energy representation across frequency on the basilar membrane as it may receive more gain from the action of the cochlear amplifier. Results of the present study indicate that noise bandwidth is the most important factor in the contralateral suppression of TEOAEs.

[A child case of subarachnoid hemorrhage triggered by head injury: a case report].

We report a case of basal subarachnoid hemorrhage in a child. The etiology of this lesion was difficult to diagnose. The patient was a 9-year-old boy. He sustained minor head injury followed by loss of consciousness and cardiopulmonary arrest. He was brought to our emergency room by ambulance. On arrival, he presented with cardiopulmonary arrest and deep comatose state. Basal subarachnoid hemorrhage was revealed on CAT scan. 3D-CTA documented two bulging portions: one was at the junction between the left vertebral artery and the left posterior inferior cerebellar artery. The other one was show

[Transoral transclival approach to vertebral-posterior inferior cerebellar artery aneurysm. Case report].

A 61-year-old male was hospitalized for subarachnoid hemorrhage. Cerebral angiography revealed a small left vertebral-posterior inferior cerebellar artery aneurysm, 5 mm to the right of the midline and in the lower third level of the clivus--the so-called "no man's land." It was felt that surgery through the lateral suboccipital approach would likely result in neurological deficits, since the aneurysm would be obscured by the tortuous parent artery or the basilar artery. Therefore, the transoral transclival approach was undertaken and the aneurysm was successfully obliterated. Postoperatively,

The speed of auditory low-side suppression.

The nonlinear cochlear phenomenon of two-tone suppression is known to be very fast, but precisely how fast is unknown. We studied the timing of low-side suppression in the auditory nerve of the cat using multitone complexes as auditory stimuli. An evalution of the group delays of the responses to these complexes allowed us to measure the timing of the responses with sub-millisecond accuracy for a large number of fibers with characteristic frequencies (CFs) between 2 and 40 kHz. In particular, we measured the delays with which the same below-CF tone complexes affected the response either as an

Suppression tuning in noise-exposed rabbits.

Psychophysical, basilar-membrane (BM), and single nerve-fiber tuning curves, as well as suppression of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), all give rise to frequency tuning patterns with stereotypical features. Similarities and differences between the behaviors of these tuning functions, both in normal conditions and following various cochlear insults, have been documented. While neural tuning curves (NTCs) and BM tuning curves behave similarly both before and after cochlear insults known to disrupt frequency selectivity, DPOAE suppression tuning curves (STCs) do not necessarily

High-resolution MRI of the human cochlea.

The majority of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies in neurotology concern the evaluation of retrocochlear pathologies or temporal bone lesions. Recently, quite a number of investigators have attempted to use imaging diagnosis to obtain a diagnosis and manifest the pathological findings of Meniere's disease. However, there is no evidence that endolymphatic hydrops in patients with Meniere's disease can be identified by imaging techniques. In this study we could depict Reissner's membrane clearer than before with the use of image processing. At the present time, we cannot apply the 2.11T M

Clinical significance of probe-tone frequency ratio on distortion product otoacoustic emissions.

Parametric variations in the ratio of primary-tone frequencies were explored to optimize the amplitude of the 2f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emission for clinical purposes. Ten ears from 5 normally hearing human subjects were examined with primary tones geometrically centred around the standard audiometric frequencies of 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 kHz. The distortion product at the frequency 2f1-f2 (f1 < f2) was measured at six probe tone frequency ratios (f2:f1) varying between 1.15 and 1.40 using equal level primaries of 75 dB SPL. The results showed that a single f2:f1 ratio betwe

The structural and functional consequences of acoustic injury in the cochlea and peripheral auditory system: a five year update.

This presentation considers important developments and new trends related to acoustic injury in the peripheral auditory system reported during the past 5 years. The discussion begins with the effect overstimulation has on the "active" cochlear process, and the associated loss in receptive field (tuning curve) selectivity. Exposure to intense sound also changes the structure and function of the tectorial membrane, sensory hair bundles, tip links, and intracellular organelles. All of these injuries may change the way in which energy is delivered to the transduction channels of the hair cell. Imp

Simplified aqueductal stenting for isolated fourth ventricle using a small-caliber flexible endoscope in a patient with neurococcidiomycosis: technical case report.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic aqueductoplasty and stenting are a preferred treatment for isolated fourth ventricle syndrome related to membranous aqueductal obstruction. We describe a technique using a small-caliber flexible endoscope that may address some limitations of current strategies. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old woman with hydrocephalus caused by neurococcidiomycosis and a functional right frontal ventriculoperitoneal shunt presented with vomiting and an isolated fourth ventricle. Magnetic resonance imaging showed an enlarged fourth ventricle and exuberant basilar arachnoiditis obstruc

Immunological mechanisms in pleural disease.

The pleural membrane consisting of pleural mesothelial cells and its underlying connective tissue layers play a critical role in immunological responses in both local and systemic diseases. The pleura, because of its intimate proximity to the lung, is positioned to respond to inflammatory changes in the lung parenchyma. Importantly, several systemic diseases have a predilection for expression on the pleural surface. Immunological responses in the pleura include the development of pleural permeability and pleural effusion formation as well as the development of pleural fibrosis and scarring. Un

Evaluation of Intracochlear Trauma Caused by Insertion of Cochlear Implant Electrode Arrays through Different Quadrants of the Round Window.

HYPOTHESIS: This study aimed to evaluate whether there is a difference in the degree of intracochlear trauma when the cochlear implant electrode arrays is inserted through different quadrants of the round window membrane. BACKGROUND: The benefits of residual hearing preservation in cochlear implant recipients have promoted the development of atraumatic surgeries. Minimal trauma during electrode insertion is crucial for residual hearing preservation. METHODS: In total, 25 fresh human temporal bones were subjected to mastoidectomy and posterior tympanotomy. The cochlear implant electrode array

Estimates of compression at low and high frequencies using masking additivity in normal and impaired ears.

Auditory compression was estimated at 250 and 4000 Hz by using the additivity of forward masking technique, which measures the effects on signal threshold of combining two temporally nonoverlapping forward maskers. The increase in threshold in the combined-masker condition compared to the individual-masker conditions can be used to estimate compression. The signal was a 250 or 4000 Hz tone burst and the maskers (M1 and M2) were bands of noise. Signal thresholds were measured in the presence of M1 and M2 alone and combined for a range of masker levels. The results were used to derive response f

Two modes of auditory hair cell loss following acoustic overstimulation in the avian inner ear.

To determine the type of cell death occurring and how the removal of damaged cells proceeds following overstimulation, we examined chick basilar papillae using an in situ DNA nick end labeling method and transmission electron microscopy. Two distinct modes of hair cell loss were identified. First, hair cells which had not progressed into typical cell death processes, apoptosis or necrosis, were deleted by extrusion from the epithelium just after sound exposure. Second, hair cells manifested degeneration through the process of apoptosis, then further deterioration within the epithelium after th

Analyses of Mössbauer mechanical measurements indicate that the cochlea is mechanically active.

Using the results of Mössbauer measurements, mechanical activity in the cochlea was tested for by comparing the measured basilar membrane (BM) transverse velocity amplitude with that calculated for a lossless mechanically passive system, derived from the measured BM velocity phase. If the cochlea is considered to be a lossless mechanically passive system, then the transverse velocity amplitude can be calculated from the group velocity and the relative variation of stiffness along the BM. The group velocity can be derived from the Mössbauer phase measurements, and the relative variation of stif…

Intraoperative electrocochleographic monitoring of inner ear surgery for endolymphatic hydrops. A review of cases.

The purpose of this review of cases was to determine whether or not the SP/AP amplitude ratio changes during unidirectional inner ear valved shunt surgery for the decompression of the hydropic labyrinth in Meniere's disease. A series of 62 patients underwent shunt surgery over a 20 month period. In 43 cases (43 ears), ECoG responses were successfully recorded throughout the duration of surgery. A pair of two-tailed paired t-tests were computed for SP/AP amplitude ratios acquired during intraoperative ECoG monitoring at the baseline and closing stage of surgery. The first t-test compared the me
