A Bayesian approach for estimating typhoid fever incidence from large-scale facility-based passive surveillance data.

Decisions about typhoid fever prevention and control are based on estimates of typhoid incidence and their uncertainty. Lack of specific clinical diagnostic criteria, poorly sensitive diagnostic tests, and scarcity of accurate and complete datasets contribute to difficulties in calculating age-specific population-level typhoid incidence. Using data from the Strategic Typhoid Alliance across Africa and Asia program, we integrated demographic censuses, healthcare utilization surveys, facility-based surveillance, and serological surveillance from Malawi, Nepal, and Bangladesh to account for under

Supervised classification of bradykinesia in Parkinson's disease from smartphone videos.

BACKGROUND: Slowness of movement, known as bradykinesia, is the core clinical sign of Parkinson's and fundamental to its diagnosis. Clinicians commonly assess bradykinesia by making a visual judgement of the patient tapping finger and thumb together repetitively. However, inter-rater agreement of expert assessments has been shown to be only moderate, at best. AIM: We propose a low-cost, contactless system using smartphone videos to automatically determine the presence of bradykinesia. METHODS: We collected 70 videos of finger-tap assessments in a clinical setting (40 Parkinson's hands, 30 co

Comparison of detection rate of 16 sampling methods for respiratory viruses: a Bayesian network meta-analysis of clinical data and systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory viruses (RVs) is a common cause of illness in people of all ages, at present, different types of sampling methods are available for respiratory viral diagnosis. However, the diversity of available sampling methods and the limited direct comparisons in randomised controlled trials (RCTs) make decision-making difficult. We did a network meta-analysis, which accounted for both direct and indirect comparisons, to determine the detection rate of different sampling methods for RVs. METHODS: Relevant articles were retrieved comprehensively by searching the online databases of

Rediscovery of the toadlet Brachycephalus bufonoides Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920 (Anura: Brachycephalidae) with osteological and acoustic descriptions.

Brachycephalus bufonoides was described as a "variety" of B. ephippium based on two specimens which 90 years later was considered full species. Besides its brief original description, nothing else is known for this species. Herein we report the rediscovery of the pumpkin-toadlet Brachycephalus bufonoides from Nova Friburgo, State of Rio de Janeiro, the second most populous area within the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. A detailed osteological description of this species was also provided, including skull, hyolaryngeal skeleton and postcranium skeleton. The laryngeal skeleton of Brachycephalus genu

Bringing a health systems modelling approach to complex evaluations: multicountry applications in HIV, TB and malaria.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding how to deliver interventions more effectively is a growing emphasis in Global Health. Simultaneously, health system strengthening is a key component to improving delivery. As a result, it is challenging to evaluate programme implementation while reflecting real-world complexity. We present our experience in using a health systems modelling approach as part of a mixed-methods evaluation and describe applications of these models. METHODS: We developed a framework for how health systems translate financial inputs into health outcomes, with in-country and international

Coalescent-based analysis distinguishes between allo- and autopolyploid origin in Shepherd's Purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris).

Polyploidization plays an important role in plant speciation. The most recent estimates report that up to 15% of angiosperm speciation events and 31% in ferns are accompanied by changes in ploidy level. Polyploids can arise either through autopolyploidy, when the sets of chromosomes originate from a single species, or through allopolyploidy, when they originate from different species. In this study, we used two different coalescent-based methods to determine the date and mode of the polyploidization event that led to the tetraploid cosmopolitan weed, Capsella bursa-pastoris. We sampled 78 C. b

Radiological significance of high-resolution computed tomography for elderly pulmonary tuberculosis patients - an analysis with culture test.

PURPOSE: Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is one of the major health problems in the elderly population, causing significant morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study is to evaluate the significance of the high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) modality for the diagnosis of PTB, in comparison to culture test. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thoracic HRCT images of the study population, comprising 124 patients clinically suspected for PTB with smear and culture reports, were analysed for sensitivity and specificity of the HRCT test. Features of active PTB were centrilobular nodules, 'tree-in-bud' p

A probabilistic expert system that provides automated mammographic-histologic correlation: initial experience.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine whether a probabilistic expert system can provide accurate automated imaging-histologic correlations to aid radiologists in assessing the concordance of mammographic findings with the results of imaging-guided breast biopsies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We created a Bayesian network in which Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) descriptors are used to convey the level of suspicion of mammographic abnormalities. Our system is a computer model that links BI-RADS descriptors with diseases of the breast using probabilities derived from the literature. M

Medication-Related Errors Among Nurses by Unit Adaptation Levels: Bayesian Network-Based Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Medical errors occur more frequently in health care than in other industries due to challenges in patient safety education for nurses and students. To address this, it is important to identify the factors and structures underlying clinical errors and apply these insights to educational programs. Medication-related errors are highly preventable with appropriate interventions, highlighting the importance of data-driven safety education. Previous research suggests that unit adaptation, rather than clinical experience alone, plays a critical role in error occurrence. Focusing on "adapt

Classifying strategy use in multiattribute subjective choice: Application to conjoint experiments in political science.

Conjoint experiments are extensively used across multiple disciplines to make inferences about preferences over multiattribute alternatives. Much previous research has analyzed the importance of attributes at the aggregate level. Here, we focus on understanding individual-level behavior and, specifically, on strategy use. We present a Bayesian cognitive model of strategy use that performs attribute weight inference (how important an attribute is), attribute level inference (which value of the attribute is favored), and latent-mixture inference to classify strategy use among well-established st

Sub-resolution imaging and Bayesian analysis of exocytosis events reveals nanoscale patterning by cortical microtubule arrays.

The microtubule cytoskeleton organizes exocytosis to enable cellular morphogenesis, but how non-centrosomal arrays control exocytic site positioning remains poorly understood. Using elongating Arabidopsis thaliana cells as a model, we developed quantitative methods to move beyond coarse correlation and reveal the precise spatial relationship between cortical microtubules and secretion. We identify KEULE, an essential SEC/MUNC protein, as a dynamic exocytosis marker that forms clusters with stereotyped assembly and disassembly kinetics at discrete secretion sites. Combining confocal microscopy

Customizable Bayesian adaptive testing with Python - The adaptivetesting package.

This paper introduces an open-source Python package for simplified, customizable computerized adaptive testing (CAT) using Bayesian methods for ability estimation. It addresses the lack of sophisticated packages for CAT in the Python programming language. Moreover, it bridges the gap between the construction and simulation of adaptive tests and their practical application by providing a dedicated API for integration with experiment software. Thereby, it eliminates the need for major code rewrites when transitioning from simulated to real-world adaptive testing. By leveraging Python's object-or

The effectiveness of different treatment methods in the treatment and prevention of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw: A systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The treatment strategies and efficacy of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) are controversial, and there is a lack of unified clinical treatment standards. We used a Bayesian network meta-analysis method to evaluate the clinical efficacy of different intervention methods. METHODS: We searched for clinical controlled trials published from January 2010 to May 2025 in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase. We assessed the quality of the included studies using the NOS quality assessment and the Cochrane risk of bias tool. We conducted a network meta

Model reduction and analysis: A case study of a malaria control model.

Globally rising cases of malaria have prompted concentrated efforts to control malaria transmission, utilising various mathematical models to support the Roll Back Malaria agenda. Many existing models with their specific modifications exhibit rigidity, limiting their application to inform malaria control interventions. This study addresses this limitation by employing a reduction technique on a comprehensive malaria control model to derive a simplified system that preserves the essential dynamics of the original system. We validate the accuracy of the reduced model by comparing the two models

Intra-storm variations in the contributions of geological formations to suspended sediment: a comparison between Bayesian and FingerPro sediment fingerprinting methods.

Quantifying the contributions of erosion-prone geological formations represents a robust approach for identifying sediment sources via sediment fingerprinting techniques. Nevertheless, intra-event variations in these contributions remain poorly understood, particularly in watersheds of northern Iran. In this study, we adopt an innovative approach that integrates geochemical tracers and weathering indices to assess the dynamic influence of geological formations on sediment production during individual rainfall events. To achieve this, 23 suspended sediment samples were collected at the watershe

Born to act: Deferred action and desire as active inference.

The active inference framework (AIF) considers the brain as a generative model guiding behavior under the imperative of minimizing the model's variational free energy. Computationally, this is accomplished by hierarchical Bayesian inference. The theory views organisms as doxastic agents, which has drawn the criticism of being insufficient to explain conative agents motivated by desire. Specifically, it has been noted that the concept of desire is not isomorphic with belief and, therefore, fits poorly with AIF. In this paper, we build on previous work that suggests a path to integrating conatio
