Afferent connections to the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis.

A systematic analysis of the distribution of cells containing horseradish peroxidase (HRP) end-product following HRP injections in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) revealed a topographic distribution of input from the amygdala. The appearance of HRP cells in the medial amygdaloid nucleus was associated with HRP injections in all parts of the amygdala except its most lateral portion. Injections of HRP confined to the anterolateral portion of the BNST resulted in extensive HRP labeling of cells in the basolateral amygdala, the central nucleus, and the amygdala hippocampal area. [Structure and function of the microcirculatory bed in the preserved heart].

The morphological analysis of the state of the heart during hypertermal perfusion with different conservants reveals clear dependence of the microcirculation and the activity of the heart upon the type of the conservant. Perfusion with a salt solution and hemodilution is accompanied by pronounced disorders in microcirculation and unsatisfactory parameters of the cardiac activity. Conservation with cryoprecipitated plasma is characterized by comparatively less microcirculatory disorders, but fails to give a reliable safety of the heart. When using medium 199, changes in microcirculation were fo

Evaluation of Naloxone Co-Prescribing Rates for Older Adults Receiving Opioids via a Meds-to-Beds Program.

Over 10,000 older adults died from opioid overdose in 2019. Naloxone is an underutilized antidote that could prevent many opioid overdose-related deaths. There is a paucity of literature evaluating naloxone prescribing through meds-to-beds programs and in older adults. This single-center, retrospective, observational cohort study aimed to assess prescribing patterns of naloxone in patients 65 years and older who were prescribed opioids via a meds-to-beds program between December 2020 and November 2021. All patients 65 years and older dispensed an opioid via meds-to-beds were included. Patients

Reduction of sleep apnea and bradycardia in preterm infants on oscillating water beds: a controlled polygraphic study.

The sleep and respiratory patterns of eight apneic preterm infants were polygraphically recorded for 24 hours. This polygraphic study was designed to test and extend our previous finding that gently oscillating water beds reduce apnea in premature infants. The infants who ranged in gestational age from 27 to 32 weeks and in birth weight from 1,077 to 1,650 gm served as their own controls, off and on the water bed. The 24-hour recordings were divided into four time blocks with the infant being placed on the water bed during alternate six-hour periods. Apnea was significantly reduced while the i

[Influence of spasmolytic agents on the cumulative calcium dose-effect curve in isolation-perfused peripheral vascular beds].

The influence of verapamil, theophylline, and papaverine on the cumulative calcium dose-effect curve was studied at the isolated perfused rat tail. The results indicate different changes of the contraction and relexation phase respectively. The findings are discussed in connection with the action mechanism of the drugs and the processes of excitation-contraction coupling.

Vascular tone and reactivity to serotonin in the internal and external carotid vascular beds of the dog.

The effects of intra-arterial infusions of serotonin on internal and external carotid blood flow were determined in anesthetized dogs by electromagnetic flow measurements. Serotonin decreased flow in the internal carotid and increased it in the external carotid. Both responses were blocked by the serotonin antagonist methysergide. The alpha adrenergic antagonist zolertine, the ganglionic blocking agent chlorisondamine and the vasodilator diazoxide blocked external carotid dilator responses but did not modify constriction in the internal carotid. Blockade of external carotid responses by the th

Sex-Dependent Vascular Responses to Atorvastatin Across Multiple Arterial Beds in a Mouse Model of Marfan Syndrome.

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is characterized by progressive aortic aneurysm formation resulting from mutations in the fibrillin-1 (Fbn1) gene. Although the thoracic aorta is the primary site of pathology, accumulating evidence indicates that vascular dysfunction in MFS extends beyond the aorta to involve multiple arterial beds. Statins have been shown to attenuate aneurysm progression in experimental models of MFS; however, their effects on systemic vascular remodeling and arterial stiffness outside the aorta remain poorly characterized. In this study, we investigated the impact of chronic atorvasta

Effect of particle irregularity and particle size distribution on the morphology of packed beds of biochar particles.

The heat and mass transfer in packed bed reactors (PBRs) are strongly influenced by the random packing of particles, making a thorough understanding of the packed bed structure crucial for optimal reactor design. This study investigates the impact of particle shape irregularities and size distributions on packing and transport properties using X-ray microtomography (XMT) imaging. Key morphological parameters, including void fraction and tortuosity, are extracted and analyzed. Two pore network models (PNMs)- one using cylindrical throats and another based on dense graph approach- are compared,

Noncontact Monitoring and AI-Driven Stroke Prediction: National Center for Neurological Disorders-Based Approach Using Smart Beds.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the second leading cause of death and third leading cause of disability worldwide and is the leading cause of death and disability among adults in China, with its incidence rate continuing to rise. In China, the average age of first-time stroke patients is 66.4 years, and the intravenous thrombolysis rate using recombinant tissue plasminogen activator within 3 h of onset is only 16%. Given this fact, there is a pressing need for real-time predictive tools, particularly for elderly individuals at home, that can provide early warnings for potential strokes. METHODS: We col

Natural history of asymptomatic gallbladder stones in clinic without beds: A long-term prognosis over 10 years.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have explored the long-term prognosis of patients with asymptomatic gallbladder stones. These reports were primarily conducted in facilities equipped with beds for addressing symptomatic cases. AIM: To report the long-term prognosis of patients with asymptomatic gallbladder stones in clinics without bed facilities. METHODS: We investigated the prognoses of 237 patients diagnosed with asymptomatic gallbladder stones in clinics without beds between March 2010 and October 2022. When symptoms developed, patients were transferred to hospitals where appropriate treatmen

Reduced Time to Admit Emergency Department Patients to Inpatient Beds Using Outflow Barrier Analysis and Process Improvement.

OBJECTIVE: Because admitted emergency department (ED) patients waiting for an inpatient bed contribute to dangerous ED crowding, we conducted a patient flow investigation to discover and solve outflow delays. After solution implementation, we measured whether the time admitted ED patients waited to leave the ED was reduced. METHODS: In June 2022, a team using Lean Healthcare methodologies identified flow delays and underlying barriers in a Midwest, mid-sized hospital. We calculated barriers' magnitudes of burden by the frequency of involvement in delays. During October-December 2022, solution
