Likelihood of Meeting Physical Activity Guidelines of Veterans Who Are Obese by Disability Status.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the likelihood of meeting the physical activity guidelines in veterans who are obese by disability status. DESIGN: We used data from the 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a cross-sectional telephone survey. The mean response rate was 44.9%. SETTING: Respondents came from all 50 states, District of Columbia, and 3 US territories. PATIENTS: Respondents included veterans self-reporting being obese (N = 13 798). MEASURES: We created a mutually exclusive disability variable: no disability, multiple disability, and limitations only…

Hawai'i's multiethnic adolescent and young adult survivors of childhood cancer: are their health behavior risks similar to state and national samples?

Due to toxicities associated with their malignancies and treatments, adolescent and young adult survivors of childhood cancer (AYASCC) are a … r similarly aged individuals (Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System data for 13-17 year olds, and Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data for 18-24 year olds). While Hawai'i AYASCC had significantly lower rates of tobacco/alcohol use, a higher proportion did not eat five fruits/vegetables a day (96%) compared to state (83%) and national (78%) samples (P < .001). Although many met …

Childhood Sexual Trauma and Subjective Cognitive Decline: An Assessment of Racial/Ethnic and Sexual Orientation Disparities.

Prior studies examining the association between childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and subjective cognitive decline (SCD) are limited. The aim of this study was to examine the racial/ethnic and sexual orientation disparities in the association between CSA and SCD. Using data from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey, crude and multivariable logistic regression models were used to determine the association between CSA and SCD adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, diabetes, hypertension, and depression. There were statistically significant differences in CSA status by a…

Prevalence of Poor Mental Health Days and Adverse Childhood Experience Reporting in U.S. Adults Before and After COVID-19.

This is the first study of US adults to examine change in the prevalence of psychological burden (i.e., self-reported poor mental health days in the past 30 days, and ACEs recollections) before compared to after COVID-19 started. We analyzed the prevalence of self-reported poor mental health days, and ACEs recollections from 17 states using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Adjusted models identified an increase in prevalence from before compared to after COVID-19 onset in those married or partnered reporting 48% more poor mental health days in the past 30 days; persons of color …

Serious psychological distress among adults with and without disabilities.

OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to examine the extent to which serious psychological distress (SPD) is associated with behavioral and social correlates among US adults with self-reported disabilities. METHODS: Self-reported data on disability, SPD, and behavioral and social correlates were collected from 202,383 participants (aged > or = 18 years) of the 2007 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Adults with self-reported disabilities were identified using two standardized questions--one relating to activity limitation, the other to special equipment. RESULTS: The age-adjusted prevalence…

The Health of Those Who Feed Us: An Assessment of Health Inequities Along the United States Food Chain.

While the health of all depends on the food chain, few studies have focused systematically on the health of food chain workers themselves (production, manufacturing, wholesale, retail, and commercial and institutional services). In this study we used 2018 and 2019 data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) to examine health-related metrics of food chain workers, combined and by industry sector, compared to non-food chain workers, among 32 U.S. states. Logistic regression indicated U.S. food chain workers had higher prevalences of barriers to health care access, smoking, n…

Use of colorectal cancer tests--United States, 2002, 2004, and 2006.

Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States among cancers that affect both men and women. Th … l cancer tests and to evaluate changes in test use, CDC compared data from the 2002, 2004, and 2006 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) surveys. This report describes the results of that comparison, which indicated that the proportion of respondents aged > or =50 years reporting use of FOBT and/or sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy increased overall from 2002 to 2006; however, cer …

A Comparison of Health-Related Quality of Life Among Transgender Adults in the United States.

Few studies exist that examine within-group differences of the transgender population. This paper aims to assess differences in sociodemographic characteristics and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among transgender men (TM), transgender women (TW), and transgender gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals in the United States. Data were pooled from the 2014-2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Chi-square tests and weighted multivariable logistic regression models investigated differences in HRQoL by gender identity and separately identified predictors of HRQoL in these groups.…

Excess burden of hospitalizations in adults with diabetes - a national US cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: The true burden of diabetes is likely underestimated by not considering the full range of complications associated with diabetes. Our aim was to compare cause-specific hospitalizations in adults with vs. without diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Our denominator included all adults with and without self-reported diabetes from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey, weighted to reflect the U.S. POPULATION: Our numerator, age-standardized risks of ICD-10-CM-defined inpatient hospitalizations and emergency department (ED) visits, were identified from the 2019 …

Cannabis use and associated sleep-disordered breathing among US adults.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: As sleep-disordered breathing has become more prevalent, so has cannabis use due to legalization across many regions of the United States of America (USA). This study sought to determine if there is an association between cannabis use and signs of sleep-disordered breathing. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of a sample of 14,485 US adults from the 2017 to 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Data from state-administered telephone surveys were used. We utilized survey-weighted multivariable logistic regression to investigate the association betwee…

Factors associated with physical inactivity in adult breast cancer survivors-A population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer-specific mortality. Although factors associated with physical inactivity in breast cancer survivors have been studied, a detailed examination at the population level is still lacking. METHODS: We addressed this gap in 1236 women with a diagnosis of breast cancer from the 2016 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Cancer Survivorship module. Physical inactivity was defined as self-reported absence of leisure time physical activity. Factors examined in the multivariable logistic regression model included socio…

PrEP 1.0 and Beyond: Optimizing a Biobehavioral Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate coformulated with emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) was shown to be effective in preventing HIV acquisition when used for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), but questions have arisen regarding optimal PrEP implementation strategies. METHODS: A narrative review of literature since 2010 regarding PrEP effectiveness, implementation, and new prevention modalities was undertaken to summarize lessons learned, and to review potential benefits and challenges. RESULTS: Although daily TDF/FTC is safe, well tolerated, and highly effective in preventing HIV transmission, it

Human papillomavirus and cervical cancer behavioral surveillance in the US.

In the US, federal and state behavioral surveillance systems routinely monitor self-reported sexual behavior and Papanicolaou (Pap) test use to identify high-risk populations, trends, and disparities and to guide and evaluate interventions for cervical cancer prevention and control. Clinical uptake of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and testing necessitates the expansion of behavioral surveillance systems. Cervical disease is the main focus of HPV-related behavioral surveillance because of greater cancer incidence and mortality relative to other susceptible organs, and the availability

Valley Fever (Coccidioidomycosis) Awareness - California, 2016-2017.

Valley fever (coccidioidomycosis) is endemic in the southwestern United States and caused by inhalation of Coccidioides spp. fungal spores from soil or dust; 97% of U.S. Valley fever cases are reported from Arizona and California (1). In California, Valley fever incidence increased 213% from 2014 to 2018 (2). In 2016, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) added three questions to the adult California Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey to better understand whether Californians had heard of Valley fever, knew the environmental risk where they live, and knew who…

Lung Cancer Screening Among Head and Neck Cancer Survivors.

Survivors of head and neck cancer are at elevated risk for secondary primary lung cancer, independent of smoking history, yet LDCT screening in this population is both likely underutilized and inconsistently captured in national survey data, in part because the smoking-history elements needed to determine eligibility are often missing. We used nationally representative 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data to examine lung cancer screening prevalence among head and neck cancer survivors and screening patterns by eligibility under 2013 and 2021 US Preventive Services Task Force cr…

Relationship among adverse childhood experiences, history of active military service, and adult outcomes: homelessness, mental health, and physical health.

OBJECTIVES: We determined whether a report of adverse childhood experiences predicts adult outcomes related to homelessness, mental health, and physical health and whether participation in active military service influences the relationship between childhood and adult adversity. METHODS: Using data from the 2010 Washington State Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, we tested by means of logistic regression the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and 3 adult outcomes--homelessness, mental health, and physical health--as well as differences among those with a history of ac…
