Psychometric Validation of the Korean Version of the Professional Bereavement Scale Among Tertiary Hospital Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Nurses experience professional bereavement-distinct grief reactions following patient deaths that differ fundamentally from familial bereavement; however, existing measurement tools lack specificity for assessing these unique professional experiences. PURPOSE: This study aimed to validate the Korean version of the Professional Bereavement Scale, which comprises two subscales: Short-term bereavement reactions (SBR) and accumulated global changes (AGC). METHODS: Data from 340 nurses working for at least one month in tertiary hospitals in Korea were used in this study. The content,

Biopsychosocial functional impairment symptoms related to bereavement in six Latin American countries: A network analysis.

The present study aimed to analyze the symptoms of grief-related functional impairment using network analysis in 1,909 individuals who had experienced the death of a loved one across six Spanish-speaking Latin American countries. The Grief Impairment Scale (GIS) was used to assess symptoms of grief-related functional impairment. The bootnet package was employed to estimate a general network, the Strength index was used to estimate centrality. The results indicated that difficulties in establishing meaningful relationships were the most central symptom in the total sample. However, a more speci

'Stories of Loss'-Designing and Evaluating a Patient-Led Perinatal Bereavement Programme for Medical Students.

BACKGROUND: Providing bereavement support to parents who have experienced a perinatal loss requires knowledge, empathy and sensitivity. Undergraduate opportunities to learn directly from parents with personal experience remain limited. This study assessed medical students' responses to parent-led stories on perinatal loss, evaluating their self-reported changes in knowledge, skills and self-awareness. APPROACH: Final-year medical students in University College Dublin participated in a new educational initiative featuring parent-educators from three perinatal loss advocacy groups. Each session

Bereavement care guidelines used in health care facilities immediately following perinatal loss: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the scoping review was to explore the evidence and describe what is known about perinatal bereavement care guidelines provided within health care facilities prior to discharge. Additionally, the review sought to identify what is known about parents' mental health outcomes, and map these outcomes to the characteristics of the bereavement care guidelines. INTRODUCTION: Perinatal loss poses a serious risk of emotional trauma and mental health sequelae. Conflicting evidence for international bereavement care guidelines and inconsistent implementation, a lack of experim

Introduction of miscarriage bereavement leave in New Zealand in 2021: A comparison with international experiences.

In early 2021, the New Zealand Parliament introduced miscarriage bereavement leave prompting global debate about creating a right to paid time off work for people bereaved through pregnancy loss. Construing such time off as bereavement leave, rather than sick leave or maternity leave, acknowledges the profound significance of the event, but there is limited evidence on whether leave improves mental or physical health outcomes. In this paper we compare four countries with some form of specific bereavement leave for pregnancy losses: New Zealand, United Kingdom, India, and the Phillippines. We a

Social Determinants Associated With Exposure to Childhood Parental Bereavement and Subsequent Risk for Psychiatric Disorders.

IMPORTANCE: Prevalence of childhood parental death varies by race and ethnicity and socioeconomic status, yet whether similar variation persists in the association with lifetime psychiatric disorder is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether race and ethnicity and parental educational attainment are associated with the risk of death of a parent; to determine whether the risk for lifetime psychiatric disorder associated with death of a parent was moderated by race and ethnicity and highest parental educational attainment; and to examine a potential intersection of race and ethnicity with parenta

Do clinical psychologists extend the bereavement exclusion for major depression to other stressful life events?

BACKGROUND: In assessing potential cases of major depressive disorder (MDD), to what extent do clinicians interpret symptoms within the explanatory context of major life stressors? Past research suggests that when clinicians know a plausible life event cause for a person's disordered symptoms, they generally judge that person to be less abnormal than if the cause was unknown. However, the current, fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders specifies that only bereavement-related life events exclude a client from a diagnosis of MDD, and the upcoming fifth editio

Effects of attachment bereavement and pre-event conditions on subsequent depressive symptoms in older adults.

A sample of 1,411 older adults (age 55+) who had been interviewed both prior to and after bereavement were studied, allowing for pre-event controls. Those who had lost a parent, spouse, or child had the strongest depressive reactions, as predicted by an attachment-bonding hypothesis; however, material losses were also related to depression. Although bereavement/loss events were clearly related to subsequent depression even after pre-event depression, resources, and events were controlled, certain pre-event characteristics were predictive of the bereavement/loss events, including prior undesira

Prolonged grief and insomnia symptoms in cancer-bereaved parents: a latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Parents who experience the death of a child may develop a range of mental health problems including insomnia and prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Insomnia symptoms predict worsening of prolonged grief symptoms and persons with more chronic insomnia trajectories may be at risk of developing PGD. However, it remains to be established when prolonged grief and insomnia symptomatology co-occur and which potential risk factors heighten the risk of comorbid insomnia and prolonged grief. METHODS: To address these questions, we conducted a cross-sectional, registry-based survey study involvi

Bereaved informal caregivers' experiences with a Canadian home hospice program: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Most individuals wish to die at home, yet in Canada this is not always possible. Informal caregivers play a vital role to support individuals who wish to receive home-based end-of-life care and die at their own homes. Community-based home hospice programs aim to support both individuals at the end of life and their informal caregivers, however, informal caregivers' experiences within such programs, particularly in northern communities, remain underexplored. This study aimed to describe the experiences of bereaved informal caregivers who received support from a community-based home

Instruments for measuring grief in bereaved adults: a protocol for a COSMIN-based systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Grief associated with bereavement is a multidimensional psychological, physiological and behavioural response to the loss of loved ones. Bereaved individuals may experience physical distress, separation anxiety, intense yearning and cognitive confusion, with an increased risk of adverse physical and mental health outcomes, including death. Currently, various tools are used to measure grief in bereaved adults; however, these tools show significant differences in their cultural context and quality of development. Psychometric properties, including reliability, validity and responsi

A comprehensive investigation of comorbidities of prolonged grief disorder in a bereaved inpatient psychiatric sample.

Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) was recently added to ICD-11 and DSM-5-TR. Depression and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are frequent comorbidities, but findings regarding comorbid somatoform disorder and personality disorders remain mixed and studies with severely impaired patients are scarce. It was therefore the objective of the present study to examine comorbidities of PGD in a bereaved inpatient psychiatric sample. We assessed N = 101 bereaved inpatients in a psychiatric hospital with clinical interviews and self-report questionnaires. We calculated differences between patients with
