This study evaluated the improvement of bisphenol A (BPA) elimination through hydrogen sulfite (HS) coupling with persulfate (PS) activated by low amounts of Fe2+. Under the optimum condition (10 μM Fe2+, 0.6 mM HS, 0.8 mM PS, pH = 4.0), 100% BPA (5 μM) was removed within 15 min. Sulfate radical (SO4•-) and singlet oxygen (1O2) were confirmed as the primary active species for BPA degradation in the Fe2+/HS/PS system, and the steady-state concentration of SO4•- and 1O2 was 2.43 × 10-9 M and 1.67 × 10-9 M, respectively. Besides, FeHSO3+ and FeOHSO3H+ were the main iron species in the Fe2+/HS/PS

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor widely distributed in the environment due to its common use in the plastics industry. It is known that it has a strong negative effect on human and animal organisms, but a lot of aspects of this impact are still unexplored. This includes the impact of BPA on the enteric nervous system (ENS) in the large intestine. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate the influence of various doses of BPA on the neurons located in the descending colon of the domestic pig, which due to similarities in the organization of intestinal innervation to the huma

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an omnipresent environmental pollutant. Despite being restrictions in-force for its utilization, it is widely being used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Direct, low-dose, and long-term exposure to BPA is expected when they are used in the packaging of food products and are used as containers for food consumption. Occupationally, workers are typically exposed to BPA at higher levels and for longer periods during the manufacturing process. BPA is a known endocrine disruptor chemical (EDC), that causes male infertility, which has a negative impac

A new method for determining endocrine disrupter compounds (EDCs) in sewage sludge is described in this paper. EDCs studied were bisphenol A (BPA) and alkylphenols (APs). In order to obtain a fast and simple method, selective pressurised liquid extraction (SPLE) and focused ultrasound solid-liquid extraction (FUSLE) were tested. Best results for SPLE were obtained using Florisil as clean-up sorbent and dichloromethane as extraction solvent, while temperature was the only significant variable. Analyte extraction by SPLE was completed in only one extraction cycle of 1 min at 130 °C. FUSLE was ca

Bisphenols A and S (BPA, BPS) and methylparaben (MetPB) are considered endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The development of approaches for more realistic estimation of exposure to these EDCs is crucial for understanding the extent of the actual burden in the population. Dietary exposure to BPA, BPS, and MetPB in Spanish children (3-12 years old) was estimated using 3 different approaches. The 24-h dietary recall (R24h) and food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) were used, together with reverse dosimetry applied to human biomonitoring (HBM) data to calculate daily intake (DI). Based on R24h an

BACKGROUND: Bisphenols (BPs) have been shown to exhibit developmental toxicities. Epidemiological evidence on prenatal BPs exposure and infant growth primarily confined scopes to specific BPs and birth outcomes, with few studies focusing on infant growth and reporting inconsistent findings. The joint effect of prenatal exposure to BPs mixture on infant growth was rarely studied.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined associations of prenatal exposure to individual bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues (bisphenol F [BPF], bisphenol S [BPS], bisphenol AF [BPAF], and tetrachlorobisphenol A [TCBPA]) and th

An ongoing interest in environmental exposures and female fertility has led to an increasing number of studies focusing on endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Both natural and synthetic compounds have the ability to impact reproductive health by altering the structure and/or function of genes and proteins that facilitate normal ovarian and endometrial functions. This mini-review aims to summarize the effects of some of the most common EDCs on female fertility, including the effects of pesticides and plasticizer alternatives (phthalates, bisphenol A), based on available data in human studies

Zero valent iron-loaded biochar (Fe0-BC) has shown promise for the removal of various organic pollutants, but is restricted by reduced specific surface area, low utilization efficiency and limited production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, iron carbide-loaded activated biochar (Fe3C-AB) with a high surface area was synthesized through the pyrolysis of H3PO4 activated biochar with Fe(NO3)3, tested for removing bisphenol A (BPA) and elucidated the adsorption and degradation mechanisms. As a result, H3PO4 activated biochar was beneficial for the transformation of Fe0 to Fe3C. Fe3

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review describes the most recent data about the effects of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) on infant and early childhood growth and reproductive tract development as well as controversies in the field.
RECENT FINDINGS: EDCs are present in pregnant women, young children and adolescents. Whether the level of exposure contributes to disease is an ongoing debate. Epidemiological studies suggest associations between prenatal EDC exposure and disease outcome, but animal studies using controlled EDC exposure have varying results with underlying mechanisms largely unknow

Bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogs are widely recognized for their use in industry and plastic manufacturing. Consequently, humans and animals are continually exposed to various substances in their daily lives. This review evaluates the hepatic toxicity of BPA and its analogs in mice and rats, with particular emphasis on molecular mechanisms, histopathological alterations, and interspecies differences. Studies indicate that BPA induces increased hepatotoxicity by disrupting key cellular processes, including oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and lipid metabolism. The reduction in antiox

Anti-androgens entering the aquatic environment, e.g., by effluents from wastewater treatment plants or agricultural settings are contributing to endocrine disruption in wildlife and humans. Due to the simultaneous presence of agonistic compounds, common in vitro bioassays can underestimate the risk posed by androgen antagonists. On the other hand, cytotoxic effects might lead to false positive assessments of anti-androgenic effects in conventional bioassays. In the present study, a combination of normal phase high-performance thin-layer chromatography (NP-HPTLC) with a yeast-based reporter ge

In recent decades, emerging evidence has identified endocrine and neurologic health concerns related to exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including bisphenol A (BPA), certain per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFASs), and phthalates. This has resulted in consumer pressure to remove these chemicals from the market, especially in food-contact materials and personal care products, driving their replacement with structurally or functionally similar substitutes. However, these "new-generation" chemicals may be just as or more harmful than their predecessors and some have not recei

In 2023, European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a re-evaluation of the safety of bisphenol A (BPA), establishing the new tolerable daily intake (TDI) as 0.2 ng/kg·bw/day with a 20,000-fold reduction compared to 2015, which regained public concern about the impact of bisphenols (BPs) on human health. In order to explore the health risk to thyroid function of BPs, in this study, we assessed the internal exposure levels of BPs and the relationships between urinary BPs and thyroid function in general adults. We carried out a cross-sectional study in Chengdu, China, recruiting 1486 adults

The research objective was established by taking into account common sources of soil contamination with bisphenol A (B) and zinc (Zn2+), as well as the scarcity of data on the effect of metabolic pathways involved in the degradation of organic compounds on the complexation of zinc in soil. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the spectrum of soil homeostasis disorders arising under the pressure of both the separate and combined toxicity of bisphenol A and Zn2+. With a broad pool of indicators, such as indices of the effect of xenobiotics (IFX), humic acid (IFH), plants (IFP), colo

The migration and transformation of Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), DechloranePlus (DP), and cadmium in soil-rice system was investigated, and the influence on the quality of two varieties of rice was studied. The degradation half-lives of TBBPA, BBPAs, syn-DP, and anti-DP were 23.18 ~ 26.36 days, 30.14 ~ 36.10 days, 72.96-81.55 days, and 169.06-198.04 days in the soil. TBBPA was gradually degraded to tri-BBPA, di-BBPA, mono-BBPA, and bisphenol A by the debromination. TBBPA and its bromide metabolites could be bioaccumulated in different tissues of rice; mono-BBPA and bisphenol A was easy to ac

Environmental contaminants BPS and BPAF, emerging substitutes for BPA, are raising concerns as endocrine disruptors. This study assessed their effects on zebrafish spermatogenesis using ex vivo testicular explants exposed to 0.5, 5, or 50 µg/L of each compound for 7 days. Both chemicals impaired spermatogenesis by reducing meiotic (Spcp) and post-meiotic (Spt) cyst formation, with BPS showing stronger effects. Additionally, they altered the expression of marker genes related to spermatogenesis, steroidogenesis, and epigenetic regulation. Notably, cyp19a1a was upregulated by both, indicating es

The effects of bisphenol A (BPA), a highly diffused endocrine-disrupting chemical found mainly in plastics, on neural circuits and behaviors are well-known. However, the effects of its substitutes have not been fully investigated. Thus, in the present study, we compare the effects of perinatal exposure to bisphenol A or S (BPS) on reproductive behaviors and related hypothalamic kisspeptin system in mice. C57BL/6J dams were orally treated with 4 μg/kg body weight/day of BPA, BPS, or vehicle from mating until the weaning of the offspring. In the adult offspring, we performed the two-bedding T-Ma

Micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs), omnipresent in the environment, can act as carriers of metabolism-disrupting chemicals (MDCs) and can enter the human body through the food web, thereby increasing coexposure risk. Although the combined hepatotoxicity has been reported, the underlying mechanism has not yet been well understood. Given the limited evidence from the human aspect, this review is mainly based on the evidence from mammalian and in vitro studies. We reviewed articles published in PubMed, Web of science and Scopus related to this topic (singular hepatotoxicity, interaction, and combine
