Using Surveillance of Animal Bite Patients to Decipher Potential Risks of Rabies Exposure From Domestic Animals and Wildlife in Brazil.

Direct contact with domestic animals and wildlife is linked to zoonotic spillover risk. Patients presenting with animal-bite injuries provide a potentially valuable source of surveillance data on rabies viruses that are transmitted primarily by animal bites. Here, we used passive surveillance data of bite patients to identify areas with high potential risk of rabies transmission to humans across Brazil, a highly diverse and populous country, where rabies circulates in a range of species. We analyzed one decade of bite patient data from the national health information system (SINAN) comprising

Which mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) are candidates for DNA extraction in forensic practice?

Mosquitoes can be of importance in forensic context as a source of the perpretator's DNA. The aim of this study was to find how can we optimize the selection of appropriate mosquito individuals. The study was based on the data of 177833 trapped female mosquitoes and 105236 individuals which were collected directly from human skin. The mean human-specific biting willingness value of Aedes species was the highest (mean: 0.8). Significant differences were found between the human-specific biting willingness value variances of Aedes and Culex (p=0.0117) and barely significant differences between An

Integrating routinely collected mosquito vector and human behavioral data for malaria prevention: A case example in central region Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Integrating human behavioral data with data on malaria vector biting rates can help to quantify human exposure to malaria vectors and identify gaps in protection; however, to date, the availability of necessary human location and behavior data have been more limited as compared to that of corresponding entomological data. To expand the data available for use in vector-human data integrations, this case example explored the process and interpretations of integrating human behavior estimates from the Malaria Behavior Survey (MBS), a large-scale cross-sectional survey measuring behavi

Poisonous Spiders: Bites, Symptoms, and Treatment; an Educational Review.

More than 40,000 species of spiders have been identified in the world. Spider bites is a common problem among people, however few of them are harmful but delay in treatment can cause death. Since the spider bites are risk full to human, they should be taken seriously, especially in endemic areas. Our objective in this review was to study about poisonous spiders and find out treatments of them. Therefore, we collected related articles from PubMed database and Google Scholar. Three important syndromes caused by spider bites are loxoscelism, latrodectism and funnel web spider syndrome. Many treat

Spatial tick bite exposure and associated risk factors in Scandinavia.

Tick-borne diseases are emerging and re-emerging threats causing public health concerns in Europe and North America. Prevention and control requires understanding of human exposure and behaviour. The aim was to measure exposure to tick bites across Scandinavia, its spatial distribution and the associated risk factors. Methods We sent a web-based survey to a randomly chosen population and analysed answers by Principal Component Analysis and Chi-Square. Individual responses were aggregated at the municipality level to assess the spatial distribution of bites. Results Nearly 60% of adults reporte

A Model for Experimental Exposure of Humans to Larval Ixodes scapularis Ticks.

Tickborne diseases are a significant public health problem in the United States and worldwide. Ticks are obligate blood-feeding arthropods; an ixodid tick must remain attached to the skin of the host and complete its multi-day feeding process to acquire its blood meal. Exposing animals to ticks is a common practice for studying host responses to tick bites and tickborne diseases. We developed the procedure, conducted the first human research study, and published the findings on exposing human volunteers to uninfected larval Ixodes scapularis ticks. This article describes the methodology used t

An expert-curated global database of online newspaper articles on spiders and spider bites.

Mass media plays an important role in the construction and circulation of risk perception associated with animals. Widely feared groups such as spiders frequently end up in the spotlight of traditional and social media. We compiled an expert-curated global database on the online newspaper coverage of human-spider encounters over the past ten years (2010-2020). This database includes information about the location of each human-spider encounter reported in the news article and a quantitative characterisation of the content-location, presence of photographs of spiders and bites, number and type

A prospective study on the incidence of dog bites and management in a rural Cambodian, rabies-endemic setting.

Rabies circulates intensely in Cambodia, mainly affecting rural populations. We conducted a prospective study to estimate the baseline incidence of potentially infective dog bites in rural villages of Siem Reap province, Cambodia. The study was conducted in a convenience sample of 844 families totaling 1779 persons in four villages. The study collected data in a total of 802.3 person-years. Trained village health workers (VHW) exhaustively documented consecutive dog bites at the end of each month. Between May 15th and November 15th, 2011, a total of 40 attacks (43 bites; 1.07 bites per attack)

Bedbugs.

Cimex lectularius (the "bedbug") is an insect that feeds nocturnally, taking a requisite blood meal from a sleeping human or other parasitized host. Immunological reactions to bedbug saliva vary, but typically, bites yield erythematous and pruritic papules. The face and distal extremities, areas uncovered by sleeping clothes or blankets, are preferentially involved. Until the late 1990s, bedbug infestations in the United States were declining. Resurgence is attributed to increased travel and resistance to insecticides. Although hepatitis or human immunodeficiency virus is not effectively trans

Epidemiology of Eastern Massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus) Snakebites in the Great Lakes States, 1800-2015.

INTRODUCTION: The eastern massasauga rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus) has the northernmost distribution of any venomous snake in the United States and presents a potential, but little-studied, risk to humans. METHODS: We quantified the reported incidence of massasauga bites to humans in the Great Lakes states by searching historic and contemporary media reports between 1800 and 2015. RESULTS: We identified 848 reported massasauga bites across the region, most of which were concentrated along the border of Indiana and Michigan. The number of bites per decade increased into the late 1800s as

Allergic reactions associated with tsetse fly bites.

BACKGROUND: Allergic reactions in response to arthropod bites are a growing concern worldwide. Alpha-Gal syndrome (AGS) is a red meat allergy associated with IgE antibodies against galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-Gal), typically linked to tick bites but other arthropods may also play a role. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential association between tsetse fly (Glossina spp.) bites and AGS by analyzing clinical cases, citizen science data, and the possible production of alpha-Gal by tsetse flies. METHODS: Data from five case series involving tsetse fly bites include
