BACKGROUND: Ticks and tick-borne diseases are major constraints to cattle productivity in sub-Saharan Africa. This study assessed the epidemiology and host-level determinants of tick infestation in communal cattle systems in South Africa.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined 787 cattle across 17 villages. Animal-level data included sex, breed (Nguni, Drakensberg, Bonsmara, Brahman, Hereford, Simmentaler, and crossbreeds), age, and body condition score. Patients treated with radioiodine for thyrotoxicosis and hyperthyroidism are a source of radiation exposure and represent a potential radiation hazard for the people in their environment. Doses to the relatives can be estimated from dose rates of the patient or measured with a proper dosimeter. Sensitive thermoluminescent dosimeters have been used to measure the doses absorbed by the family members of patients treated with iodine-131 ((131)I) for thyrotoxicosis. Large breeding populations of California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) are located on San Miguel and San Nicolas Islands in the Southern California Bight. In 2001, there was a substantial increase in pup mortality in late summer and fall. From June 2002 to January 2003, 208 freshly dead pups were examined on San Miguel Island, the most western of the Channel Islands off the coast of southern California. Lung burden analysis was performed on 126 autopsy cases of persons who died in New York City from 1966 through 1968. Of the 126 cases, 107 were probably non-occupationally exposed, judging by occupational history and asbestos body content of lung. Fifty-three of the 107 cases contained short chrysotile fibers/fibrils, < 5 microns in length, present in 3-fold greater amounts than were found in laboratory background controls. The metabolism of methyl mercury (MeHg) has been studied in rabbits administered 203Hg-labeled methyl mercuric chloride, 0.125 mumol/kg body weight, twice a week for 9 weeks, by intravenous injection. Twelve weeks after cessation of treatment, about 54% of the administered dose had been excreted in faeces and 5% in urine. After one week, the highest concentration of 203Hg was found in fur (8.6 nmol Hg/g). In the days after the nuclear reactor accident at Chernobyl (USSR) in April 1986, the Dutch Poison Control Center had to answer questions concerning possible health effects caused by (over)exposure to ionizing radiation. These questions were similar to questions asked regarding exposure to toxic agents after chemical accidents. It is obvious that the experience and practical approach of a Poison Control Center in handling toxicological problems can be used in problems concerning ionizing radiation.

We have designed a nose-only inhalation exposure chamber in which fresh aerosol is flowed past each exposure port and exhaled air is immediately exhausted. This allows all animals in the chamber to be exposed to the same aerosol concentration. In tests comparing initial lung burdens (ILB) of animals exposed in a standard chamber with those of animals exposed in the flow-past chamber, coefficients of variation in ILBs were significantly smaller for the latter.

In order to assess the risk of exposure to ionizing radiation in man, and to evaluate the results of therapeutic measures, the mortality of rhesus monkeys irradiated with X-rays and fission neutrons and the effect of autologous bone marrow transplantation have been investigated.
