Predicting the onset of inappropriate compensatory behaviors in undergraduate college women.

The present study examined various factors from the interactive and sociocultural models of bulimia nervosa as predictors of the onset of compensatory behaviors. Participants (n=237) completed a series of questionnaires assessing dietary restraint, body dissatisfaction, negative affect, binge eating, perfectionism, and self-esteem at two time points one year apart. Women who did not engage in compensatory behaviors at time one but did engage in compensatory behaviors at time two (n=21) were compared to women who engaged in compensatory behaviors at both time points (n=28) and women who did not…

Spatial hand representation in anorexia nervosa: a controlled pilot study.

Body representation distortion (BRD) is a core criterion of Anorexia Nervosa (AN), and is usually assessed subjectively, focusing on body shape. We aimed to develop a new assessment to evaluate body representation independently from socially-mediated body image, on a body part with low emotional salience (hands). In a monocentric open label pilot study, we measured hand representations based on explicit (verbal) and implicit (tactile) instructions. Participants, with eyes closed, had to point targeted locations (knuckles and nails of each finger) based on verbal instructions and tactile stimul

A network analysis of body satisfaction of people with gender dysphoria.

In gender dysphoria (GD), much of the experienced distress results from body dissatisfaction. The current study analyzed the configuration of body satisfaction in trans men and women using network analysis. In total, 485 individuals diagnosed with GD from four European countries, applying for medical treatment, filled out the Body Image Scale for Transsexuals. A six-factor model reflecting different body areas was confirmed via confirmatory factor analysis. A further configuration of body satisfaction was modelled using correlation network analysis techniques in R. Genital dissatisfaction show…

Atypical Self-Focus Effect on Interoceptive Accuracy in Anorexia Nervosa.

Background: Interoceptive abilities are known to be affected in anorexia nervosa (AN). Previous studies could show that private self-focus can enhance interoceptive accuracy (IAcc) in healthy participants. As body dissatisfaction is high in AN, confrontation with bodily features such as the own face might have a directly opposed effect in AN. Whether patients with AN can benefit from self-focus in their IAcc and whether this pattern changes over the time-course of cognitive behavioral therapy was investigated in this study. Methods: Fifteen patients with AN from the Psychosomatic Clinic in Win…

Contributions of depression and body mass index to body image.

Depression and body mass index (BMI) are known to be associated with body image, however, their independent or joint effects on body image i … ception as well as higher body image dissatisfaction. Efforts in treatment should be made to reduce body dissatisfaction in those suffering from depression and/or a high BMI, as BID can have long-lasting health consequences, such as development of anorexia and bulimia nervosa and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Perceived Coach and Teammate Weight/Shape-Related Beliefs and Disordered Eating in NCAA Swimmers.

OBJECTIVE: The distinct associations of coaches' and teammates' beliefs about ideal body weight/shape with athletes' disordered eating remain unclear. This study examined how athletes' perceptions of their coaches' and teammates' weight- and shape-related beliefs were associated with eating disorder symptoms and body dissatisfaction among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) swimmers. We hypothesized that both perceived coaches' and teammates' beliefs would be significantly associated with eating disorder symptoms and body dissatisfaction. METHOD: Participants were 190 in-season NC…

Development, Validation, and Measurement Invariance of the Body Image Bidimensional Assessment (BIBA) in Italian and Spanish Children and Early Adolescent Samples.

Body dissatisfaction (BD) is an important public health issue as it negatively influences the physical and psychosocial wellbeing of children/early adolescents. Available measures of BD for this population are scarce, have a significant bias, or only evaluate weight-related dissatisfaction. This study, through the exploratory factor analysis (EFA), aims to develop and validate the Italian (Study 1) and Spanish (Study 2) versions of a new tool, the Body Image Bidimensional Assessment (BIBA), which is not subject to sex-age-race biases and is able to identify BD related to weight and height amon…

Disordered eating behaviours, body image and social networking in a type 1 diabetes population.

The purpose of this study was twofold: to examine predictors of disordered eating behaviours and body image dissatisfaction, including social networking, among type 1 diabetes population, and to qualitatively explore the relationship between type 1 diabetes management and body image. A convenience sample of 121 type 1 diabetes patients (F = 106; Mage = 36 ± 6.5) was collected via online questionnaires, of which 98 patients responded to two open-ended questions. Young age and negative body image explained 58.8 per cent of disordered eating variance, while body weight and social networking negat

COVID-19-Related distress, body image, and eating behaviors: a cross-sectional explanatory model.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with increased body dissatisfaction and disordered eating behaviors in adolescents. To better understand these associations, this study tested an explanatory model in which appearance-focused social media use, internalization of social media pressure, and mindfulness abilities mediated the relationship between COVID-related distress and body dissatisfaction, which in turn was associated with dietary restraint and binge eating episodes. METHODS: Adolescents (N = 493, Mage= 16.7; 47.5% girls) recruited within high schools completed online me…

The Relationship Between Body Image and Sexual Functioning Among Gay and Bisexual Men.

Gay and bisexual men report high body dissatisfaction compared to heterosexual counterparts, but no studies to date have examined how this may impact their sexual functioning. The present study investigated body image domains as predictors of sexual functioning problems (inhibited desire, erectile dysfunction, and premature ejaculation) among an online community sample of 185 gay and bisexual men, ages 18-40. Participants reported moderate to high body image satisfaction and sexual functioning consistent with previous literature with nonclinical male samples. Overall, the total variance accoun…

How self-compassion moderates the associations of body image with eating disorder psychopathology, eating-related psychosocial impairment, and psychological distress: A longitudinal study in Chinese adolescents.

Although robust evidence supports the protective role of self-compassion in the links between body image, eating disorders (EDs), and mental well-being, previous research has predominantly used cross-sectional designs, focused on Western adult samples, and failed to distinguish between components of self-compassion, namely compassionate and uncompassionate self-responding. To address these gaps, we used a longitudinal design to examine how compassionate and uncompassionate self-responding moderated associations between body image (i.e., body dissatisfaction and body appreciation) and three out…

Teasing history and eating disorder features: an age- and body mass index-matched comparison of bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder.

The study examined whether a history of being teased about physical appearance is associated with differential patterns of current symptomatology in patients with bulimia nervosa (BN) as compared to patients with binge-eating disorder (BED). Thirty-two adult female patients with BN were compared with an age- and body mass index (BMI)-matched group of 32 adult female patients with BED. A battery of established instruments were used to assess physical appearance-related teasing history, current eating disorder features, body dissatisfaction, and psychological functioning (depression and self-est…

Distinct stress, eating, and body image phenotypes among university students: a latent class analysis in Saudi Arabia.

INTRODUCTION: Disordered eating and body image disturbances are increasingly recognized as pressing public health concerns among young adults. While variable-centered approaches dominate the literature, they may obscure heterogeneity by assuming uniform associations between stress, body image, and eating behaviors. In Saudi Arabia, where rapid sociocultural change, Western beauty ideals, and rising obesity intersect with unique cultural values and academic pressures, university students may exhibit distinct psychosocial phenotypes. Therefore, the study applied latent class analysis (LCA) to id

Adolescent Females' Dyadic Conversations About Body, Weight, and Appearance.

Body talk among adolescent females has been associated with negative outcomes, including depressed mood, disordered eating, and body dissatisfaction. Yet, little work has investigated the manifestation of body talk in actual conversations between adolescent females or explored pathways through which body talk is spread (e.g., co-rumination). The present study examined body talk among adolescent female dyads (N = 23 dyads) ages 13 to 17 (Mage = 15.12) using an observational design. Reciprocally nominated dyads were recruited from a high school in the southeastern United States. Conversations be…
