Acute oral safety study of rosemary extracts in rats.

Increasing interest in rosemary plants is due to their antioxidant and health-enhancing properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential acute toxicity of two supercritical fluid extracts of rosemary. An acute safety study of rosemary extracts was conducted in Wistar rats at a single oral gavage dosage of 2,000 mg/kg of body weight. Rosemary extracts were well tolerated; no adverse effects or mortality were observed during the 2-week observation period. No abnormal signs, behavioral changes, body weight changes, or change in food and water consumption occurred. Two weeks after a…

Effect of intense military training on body composition.

Individuals in a structural physical training program can show beneficial changes in body composition, such as body fat reduction and muscle mass increase. This study measured body composition changes by using 3 different techniques-skinfold thickness (SF) measurements, air displacement plethysmography (BOD-POD), and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-during 9 months of intense training in healthy young men engaged in military training. Twenty-seven young men were recruited from a special faction of the Italian Navy. The program previewed three phases: ground combat, sea combat, and amphib

Weight gain during midlife: Does race/ethnicity influence risk?

Fears regarding weight gain and body changes commonly plague midlife women. The aim of this paper is to discuss the impact of weight gain and body changes on midlife women across various cultural backgrounds. Midlife weight gain in women is associated with age as opposed to menopausal status. Weight gain during midlife occurs across all cultural/ethnic groups; however, African Americans and Hispanic women exhibit higher rates of weight gain than their Caucasian counterparts. Although use of menopause hormone replacement therapy does not produce a clinical difference in weight gain, exercise de

Changes in C-reactive protein, neopterin and lactoferrin differ after conservative and surgical weight loss in individuals with morbid obesity.

C-reactive protein, neopterin and lactoferrin are biomarkers of atherosclerotic disease. We aimed to assess changes in these biomarkers after conservative and surgical weight loss interventions in individuals with morbid obesity, to evaluate associations between biomarker changes and changes in body mass index and HbA1c, and to study associations between changes in the biomarkers. C-reactive protein, neopterin and lactoferrin were measured before and after conservative weight loss intervention and bariatric surgery. Data were analysed with mixed models. 137 individuals (mean age 43 years) were

Body Composition Changes Following a Very-Low-Calorie Pre-Operative Diet in Patients Undergoing Bariatric Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Fatty liver in obese patients increases the technical difficulty of bariatric surgery. Pre-operative weight loss with a very-low-calorie diet (VLCD) is commonly used to facilitate surgery. Few studies have quantified the systemic effect of rapid pre-operative weight loss on body composition. The objective of this study is to evaluate body composition changes in bariatric surgery patients undergoing a VLCD. METHODS: Body composition assessments were performed between August 2017 and January 2019 using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry immediately before and after a 2-week VLCD at St

Bioelectric impedance detects fluid retention in patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass.

Excessive fluid accumulation is associated with increased morbidity and prolonged convalescence after cardiopulmonary bypass. However, water fluctuations are difficult to assess solely on the basis of changes in body weight and fluid balance. Bioelectric impedance analysis is a simple, rapid, noninvasive bedside technique that measures the resistance of the body to a weak alternating current (50 kHz). The change in resistance is inversely proportional to the change in total body water. To investigate the relationship between body weight, fluid balance, and resistance, 18 patients who had cardi

Early changes in body composition with tirzepatide in adults with obesity: a real-world BIA study.

BACKGROUND: Tirzepatide induces substantial weight loss, but real-world data on early body composition changes remain limited. METHODS: We evaluated short-term changes in body composition in 51 adults with obesity treated with tirzepatide for 12 weeks, using bioelectrical impedance analysis. RESULTS: Body weight decreased by 8.75 kg (-8.18%, P < 0.001), primarily driven by fat mass reduction (-6.87 kg, P < 0.001), with a smaller decrease in soft lean mass (-1.73 kg, P < 0.001). Despite this, the relative proportion of lean mass increased (+3.00 percentage points, P < 0.001), indicating prefe

Use of bioelectrical impedance analysis to determine body composition changes in HIV-associated wasting.

AIDS wasting syndrome results in loss of lean body mass and body cell mass. This 12-week, open-label study used bioelectrical impedance analysis to measure body composition changes in 24 patients with AIDS wasting syndrome receiving recombinant human growth hormone (r-hGH). The primary endpoint was percentage monthly change in body weight before/after r-hGH. Secondary endpoints included change from baseline in body composition (bioelectrical impedance analysis), isometric strength and CD4+ count. Twenty patients completed the study: r-hGH resulted in mean weight gains (+2.7%, P = 0.146), and s

Weight changes and eating attitudes of Japanese adolescents under acculturative stresses: a prospective study.

An increased rate of pathological eating attitudes has been reported among the people under acculturative stresses. We therefore carried out a prospective study of eating patterns in a cohort of 144 Japanese adolescents who spent 1 year with a host family in various countries of the world. The subjects showed a statistically significant gain in standardized body weight. Although the students did not report greater prevalence of abnormal eating attitudes under acculturative stresses than before, a substantial minority of them manifested maladaptive eating patterns. Among the psychosocial variab

Prediction the changes of anthropometric indices following a weight-loss diet in overweight and obese women by mathematical models.

Estimating the change rates in body size following the weight loss programs is very important in the compliance of those programs. Although, there is enough evidence on the significant association of body weight change with the other anthropometric indices and/ or body composition, there is so limited studies that have depicted this relationship as mathematical formulas. Therefore, the present research designed to use a mathematical model to predict changes of anthropometric indices following a weight-loss diet in the overweight and obese women. In this longitudinal study, 212 overweight/obese

Bisphosphonates prevent age-related weight loss in Japanese postmenopausal women.

Decline of body weight with aging is a major risk factor for frailty, osteoporosis and fracture, suggesting that treatment for osteoporosis may affect body composition. Recently, we have shown that 5-year treatment with raloxifene prevented age-related weight loss, suggesting some other drugs for osteoporosis may also prevent a decrease in body weight with aging. The present study aimed to identify the relationship between bisphosphonate treatment and body composition markers. We measured bone mineral density (BMD), body composition, and bone remodeling markers in 551 Japanese postmenopausal w
