Brief clinical report: skeletal dysplasia with short, angulated femora (kyphomelic dysplasia).

We report on an infant with broad and severely angulated short femora as the most salient manifestation of a generalized skeletal dysplasia. Other findings include congenital bowing of other long bones, narrow thorax, platyspondyly, micrognathia, and skin dimples. A marked improvement of the bowing and of the irregular flare of the metaphyses was noted over a period of 6 mo. Congenital bowing of long bones can be an isolated finding or associated with other anomalies, so the purpose of reporting all cases is important for further nosologic and pathogenetic elucidation. Because of the severity

Tibia valga caused by asymmetrical overgrowth following a nondisplaced fracture of the proximal tibial metaphysis.

Tibia valga has been described as a consequence of nondisplaced fractures of the proximal metaphysis of the tibia in children. There has been considerable speculation about the cause of this deformity. The present case is that of a child who developed a valgus deformity of her tibia after the fracture had healed in a normal position. The presence of growth arrest lines in the proximal metaphysis of the tibia demonstrates that the valgus deformity in this patient was caused by overgrowth of the medial portion of the proximal tibial epiphyseal plate.

[Sterno-costo-clavicular hyperostosis. Apropos of a case. Review of the literature].

The authors report a case of sterno-costo-clavicular hyperostosis. Since Kohler's first description in 1975, 15 observations have already been reported. The disease consists in a painful swelling of the clavicles, sternum and upper anterior ribs. On roentgenograms these bones are enlarged and show increased density. Bone scan shows markedly increased uptake. Phlebography shows subclavian vein occlusions. Histological examination demonstrates hyperostosis without osteoclasis as in Paget disease.

Vascular dysgenesis associated with skeletal dysplasia of the lower limb.

Three patients who had shortening or absence of the fibula were evaluated angiographically. An abnormal arterial pattern was found in all of the dysplastic limbs. This abnormality was characterized by persistence of an embryonic vascular pattern, absence of one of the normal arteries, and failure of formation of the plantar arch. In each patient there was a large posterior artery in the leg, termed the tibialis posterior superficialis.

Neonatal Diabetes, Congenital Hypothyroidism, and Congenital Glaucoma Coexistence: A Case of GLIS3 Mutation.

Neonatal diabetes and congenital hypothyroidism (CH) syndrome is a rare condition caused by homozygous or compound heterozygous mutations in the GLIS3 gene. Small for gestational age, congenital glaucoma, polycystic kidney disease, cholestatic hepatic fibrosis, pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, developmental delay, dysmorphic facial features, sensorineural deafness, osteopenia, and skeletal anomalies are other accompanying phenotypic features in the 22 cases described so far. We present a male patient with neonatal diabetes, CH, congenital glaucoma, developmental delay, and facial dysmorphism

Mandibular Involvement Associated With Segmental Odontomaxillary Dysplasia: A Case Series.

Segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia (SOD) is an uncommon and likely underrecognized developmental condition. In rare cases, SOD can also result in anomalies of the ipsilateral mandibular alveolar process and teeth. This report presents two cases of SOD with mandibular involvement to highlight this potential variation in SOD presentation. These cases help shed new light on our understanding of the disease mechanism and pathoetiology, while also informing clinicians to be diligent in imaging the ipsilateral mandible for dental anomalies in their patients with SOD. Based on the involvement of bot

Skeletal Dysplasia Families: A Stepwise Approach to Diagnosis.

Skeletal dysplasias are a heterogeneous collection of genetic disorders characterized by bone and cartilage abnormalities, and they encompass over 400 disorders. These disorders are rare individually, but collectively they are common (approximate incidence of one in 5000 births). Radiologists occasionally encounter skeletal dysplasias in daily practice. In the 1980s, Professor Juergen Spranger proposed a concept suitable for the diagnosis of skeletal dysplasias termed bone dysplasia families. He stated that (a) different bone dysplasias that share a similar skeletal pattern can be grouped into

A Novel Osteochondrodysplasia With Empty Sella Associates With a TBX2 Variant.

Skeletal dysplasias comprise a heterogenous group of developmental disorders of skeletal and cartilaginous tissues. Several different forms have been described and the full spectrum of their clinical manifestations and underlying genetic causes are still incompletely understood. We report a three-generation Finnish family with an unusual, autosomal dominant form of osteochondrodysplasia and an empty sella. Affected individuals (age range 24-44 years) exhibit unusual codfish-shaped vertebrae, severe early-onset and debilitating osteoarthritis and an empty sella without endocrine abnormalities.

Life-threatening giant mediastinal cystic teratoma in a 4-month-old male baby.

Cystic teratomas of the mediastinum are rare and present with severe respiratory distress during childhood. Aspiration of the cyst is indicated to reduce the cyst volume, alleviate the patient's symptoms, and secure an operative field. This report describes a 4-month-old male baby with a large anterior mediastinal teratoma presenting with severe respiratory distress. The cystic teratoma was large enough to cause pectus carinatum. Respiratory distress secondary to airway obstruction was markedly reduced by percutaneous aspiration of the cyst. Surgical excision is indicated for a malignant or be

Bilateral Madelung's deformity without signs of dyschondrosteosis within five generations in a European family--case report and review of the literature.

The paper presents a European family showing bilateral Madelung's deformity within five consecutive generations. Females as well as males are affected alternately indicating autosomal dominant inheritance. Despite of a body height within the lower normal range in two patients the diagnosis of dyschondrosteosis could not be clearly established as further hints for dwarfism are missing. The etiology of Madelung's deformity may be difficult to establish. There seems to be the possibility of an inheritance independent from the complete syndroma of dyschondrosteosis. Therefore the genetic counselli
