The effect of fecal microbiota transplantation on psychiatric symptoms among patients with inflammatory bowel disease: an experimental study.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past decade, evidence that supports the relationship between intestinal microbiota and the brain has been obtained. Ageing, stress, nutrition and medicines can alter the composition of bacteria in the intestinal microbiota. This condition, called dysbiosis, can be repaired through prebiotics, probiotics or fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). FMT is effective in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Information on FMT's use with psychiatric disorders is limited. This study aims to investigate changes in the severity of depression, anxiety and obsession o

Client and Provider Discomfort With an Adverse Childhood Experiences Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Many service providers report concerns that questions about adverse events may upset clients. Studies indicate that most survey respondents answer sensitive questions without experiencing distress, although little is known about the prevalence or correlates of clients' discomfort when they are asked similar questions by direct care providers, such as home visitors. METHODS: This study used data collected between 2013 and 2018 from 1,678 clients and 161 providers in a network of home visiting programs in Wisconsin. Clients and home visitors completed an adverse childhood experien

"Not just right" experiences account for unique variance in eating pathology.

"Not just right" experiences (NJREs) are uncomfortable sensations of incompleteness linked to obsessive-compulsive disorder; however, NJREs may be transdiagnostic and play a role in eating pathology. The current study examined relations between NJREs and eating pathology in undergraduate students. Participants (n = 248) completed self-report and behavioral assessments. Controlling for obsessive-compulsive symptoms, negative affect, and perfectionism, NJRE frequency was associated with greater drive for thinness, body dissatisfaction, and bulimic symptoms. Discomfort in response to a visual in

Distinct Cognitive Trajectories in the First Year After Hip Fracture.

OBJECTIVES: Change in cognitive functioning is often observed after hip fracture. Different patterns, with both improvement and decline, are expected, depending on premorbid cognitive functioning and events that occur during hospitalization. These patterns are unknown and important for older hip fracture patients with different levels of premorbid cognitive functioning. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, MEASUREMENTS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a multi-center randomized controlled trial. 302 consecutive patients aged 65-102 years old, admitted for hip fracture surgery, were enrolled. Resilient Coping Moderates the Effect of Trauma Exposure on Depression.

Posttraumatic depression rates are increasing in the United States, and there is a great need to identify malleable factors that could moderate posttraumatic depression levels. The purpose of this study was to examine whether resilient coping moderates the effects of trauma exposure on depression, while controlling for neuroticism-an established predictor of depressive symptoms. This study used data from 3,734 pairs of twins from the community-based University of Washington Twin Registry. Each twin pair was randomized with twin A in one subsample and twin B in the second subsample. The four-it

Brief screening for mild cognitive impairment: validation of the Brazilian version of the Montreal cognitive assessment.

BACKGROUND: The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a brief cognitive schedule that has been developed for the screening of patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). MCI is recognized as a high-risk state for Alzheimer's disease. The aim of the present study is to examine the reliability and validity of the Brazilian version of the MoCA test (MoCA-BR) in a sample of older individuals with at least 4 years of education. METHODS: The MoCA-BR was administered to 112 older adults who were classified into three diagnostic groups according to their cognitive state (Alzheimer's disease, n =

Nonresponse to clozapine and premorbid functioning in treatment of refractory schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: It is recognized that early treatment can improve outcomes and generally improve recovery potential for those with schizophrenia. Data suggest that poor premorbid functioning has been found to be related to more severe symptoms and poor antipsychotic response; however, little is known about premorbid functioning in patients who have no response to clozapine treatment. METHODS: This study compares the premorbid functioning among patients who responded to clozapine treatment (20% decrease in total Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale [BPRS] score; n = 35) and those who did not respond (…

Use of the Short-Form-36 Health Survey to detect a subgroup of fibromyalgia patients with psychological dysfunction.

The aim of the present study was to examine the in-depth application of the Short-Form-(SF)-36 Health Survey to score the general well-being in fibromyalgia syndrome (FS) patients. Quality of life was evaluated in 12 patients with FS. With respect to mental well-being (social functioning, role limitation due to emotional health problems, and mental health), two distinguished groups were found concerning psychological functioning. One group (n = 8) demonstrated psychological dysfunction, whereas the other (n = 4) showed normal psychological scores. Physical well-being scores (physical functioni

[Antipsychotics in bipolar disorders].

This article is a review of the various treatments that are currently available, in particular in France, for the treatment of bipolar disorders. This article specifically addresses the use of novel antipsychotic agents as alternative therapy to a lithium therapy and/or the use of conventional antipsychotics. The prevalence of bipolar disorder over a lifetime is around 1% of the general population. Bipolar disorder consists of alternating depressive and manic episodes. It mainly affects younger subjects, and is often associated with alcohol and drug addictions. There are two main subtypes of b

Behavioral sequelae of closed head injury. A quantitative study.

We determined the profile of behavioral disturbance in relation to closed head injury of graded severity. Patients with severe injuries, as defined by duration of coma and the presence of neurological deficit, were differentiated from a group of mildly injured patients by behavioral ratings that reflected cognitive disorganization, emotional withdrawal, and motor retardation. Neurologic measurements of injury related to the severity of behavioral disturbance included hemiparesis, aphasia, and abnormalities on computerized axial tomography. Agitation during the acute phase of injury was also pr

A brief motivational intervention for substance misuse in recent-onset psychosis.

Substance misuse is common in early psychosis, and impacts negatively on outcomes. Little is known about effective interventions for this population. We report a pilot study of brief intervention for substance misuse in early psychosis (Start Over and Survive: SOS), comparing it with Standard Care (SC). Twenty-five in-patients aged 18-35 years with early psychosis and current misuse of non-opioid drugs were allocated randomly to conditions. Substance use and related problems were assessed at baseline, 6 weeks and 3, 6 and 12 months. Final assessments were blind to condition. All 13 SOS partici

Initial assessment of hospital treatment by patients with paranoid schizophrenia: a predictor of outcome.

The value of schizophrenic inpatients' initial global assessments of treatment in the prediction of outcome was investigated. Within 3 days of admission, 31 patients with an acute paranoid schizophrenic psychosis according to ICD-10 rated on a visual analog scale to what extent they believed the treatment they were receiving was right for them. Outcome criteria were overall clinical changes measured on the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale and the Intentionality Scale. The patients' initial global assessments of treatment were significantly correlated to both outcome criteria, indicating that pat…
