New insights into brominated epoxy resin type WPCBs pyrolysis mechanisms: Integrated experimental and DFT simulation studies.

Pyrolysis is a recycling technology for waste circuit boards (WPCBs) with a wide range of applications. In this research, the brominated epoxy resin (BER) type WPCBs were taken as the research object, and the optimal pyrolysis process parameters were determined. Combined with experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the pyrolysis gaseous generation pattern and product distribution of BER type WPCBs were analyzed, and the generation mechanism of phenol, bromide and other pyrolysis products was investigated in depth. The results of the study showed that the pyrolysis rate of

Bioconcentration, Biotransformation, and Thyroid Endocrine Disruption of Decabromodiphenyl Ethane (Dbdpe), A Novel Brominated Flame Retardant, in Zebrafish Larvae.

The brominated flame retardant decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), an alternative to decabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE209), has become a widespread environmental contaminant, but its possible toxic effects to wildlife remain unknown. Using zebrafish as a model, we investigated the bioconcentration and impact of DBDPE on thyroid endocrine function after water-borne exposure, compared to BDE209. Zebrafish embryos were exposed to DBDPE or BDE209 (0, 3, 10, 30, 100, 300 nM) for 6 or 14 days. Chemical analysis revealed that DBDPE and BDE209 were bioconcentrated in zebrafish larvae, with similar magn

Gestational and Early Postnatal Exposure to an Environmentally Relevant Mixture of Brominated Flame Retardants: General Toxicity and Skeletal Variations.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are stable environmental contaminants known to exert endocrine-disrupting effects. Developmental exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) is correlated with impaired thyroid hormone signaling, as well as estrogenic and anti-androgenic effects. As previous studies have focused on a single congener or technical mixture, the purpose of the current study was to examine the effects of gestational and early postnatal exposure to an environmentally relevant mixture of BFRs designed to reflect house dust levels of PBDEs and hexabromocyclododecane on postnat

Brominated flame retardants in the surrounding soil of two manufacturing plants in China: Occurrence, composition profiles and spatial distribution.

Surface soil samples were collected surrounding two brominated flame retardants (BFRs) manufacturing plants in China in August 2014 and analyzed for 23 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and 8 novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs). BDE209 and decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) were the predominant compounds in soil with the median levels of 1600 and 560 ng/g dw, respectively. The PBDEs profiles in soil samples were consistent with that of commercial product (comDecaBDE). The percentage contributions to total PBDEs decreased from higher to lower brominated homologues. Lower concentrations

Generation and analysis of mixed chlorinated/brominated homologs of the halogenated natural product heptachloro-1'-methyl-1,2'-bipyrrole.

The 2,3,3',4,4',5,5'-heptachloro-1'-methyl-1,2'-bipyrrole (Q1, MBP-79) and further halogenated 1'-methyl-1,2'-bipyrroles (MBPs) are a class of marine natural products repeatedly detected in seafood and marine mammals from all over the world. Only Q1 is currently commercially available as reference standard and the full synthesis of mixed brominated-chlorinated compound is rather complicated. For this reason, synthetic Q1 (240 mg) was transferred into bromine-containing MBPs by UV-irradiation in the presence of bromine. Bromine, which rapidly vanished from the solutions, was renewed during the …

Untargeted Identification of Organo-Bromine Compounds in Lake Sediments by Ultrahigh-Resolution Mass Spectrometry with the Data-Independent Precursor Isolation and Characteristic Fragment Method.

While previous studies have found that unknown natural and synthetic organo-bromine compounds (NSOBCs) contributed more than 99% of the total organic bromine (Br) in the environment, there was no efficient method for untargeted screening to identify NSOBCs in environmental matrixes. A novel untargeted method for identifying NSOBCs, based on ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (UHRMS) with the Q Exactive instrument was developed. This method included a data-independent precursor isolation and characteristic fragment (DIPIC-Frag) procedure to identify NSOBCs. A total of 180 successive 5-m/z-w…

Safe and Sustainable by Design Assessment of Flame Retardant Alternatives in Household Electronic Devices: A Comparison of Phosphinate-Based and Brominated Systems.

The European Commission (EC) introduced the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework to support the transition toward a toxic-free environment and to foster chemical innovation through the (re)design of safer and more sustainable chemicals and materials. The present study applies the EC SSbD framework to assess the safety and environmental sustainability aspects of two flame retardant (FR) systems used in plastic components of household electronics: a phosphinate-based system and a brominated system. The former (alternative system) is based on aluminum diethyl phosphinate (DEPAL), while

Mechanistic insights into the impact of bromide ion adsorption and surface bromination on Cu2O for enhanced selectivity and activity in electrochemical CO2 reduction.

The enhanced selectivity for C2+ products in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (ECO2RR) is critically dependent on the regulation of the elemental existence state on the surface of the electrocatalyst. In this study, Cu2O nanowires featuring multiple grain boundaries were successfully synthesized. Two distinct model catalysts were prepared: one through surface adsorption of Br- (denoted as Cu2O_Br) and the other via surface bromination (denoted as Cu2O@CuBr). These models were employed to systematically investigate the influence of the differences between Br- adsorption on the Cu2O su

Development of novel alpha 2B adrenergic receptor ligands by using a palladium catalyzed Buchwald Hartwig amination with a brominated benzodiazepine.

Some benzodiazepines with excellent affinities to the gamma aminobutyric receptors have been reported to attenuate intracellular calcium by interacting with alpha adrenergic receptors (ARα). To identify novel benzodiazepines that selectively bind adrenergic receptors, we coupled amines to a brominated benzodiazepine starting material, and generated a library of compounds that yielded compounds with good affinity for the ARα2 subtypes. These compounds were synthesized using a Buchwald Hartwig amination reaction employing XPhos as the most successful ligand among more than twenty ligands that we

Identification of Mortalin as the Main Interactor of Mycalin A, a Poly-Brominated C-15 Acetogenin Sponge Metabolite, by MS-Based Proteomics.

Mycalin A (MA) is a polybrominated C-15 acetogenin isolated from the marine sponge Mycale rotalis. Since this substance displays a strong antiproliferative bioactivity towards some tumour cells, we have now directed our studies towards the elucidation of the MA interactome through functional proteomic approaches, (DARTS and t-LIP-MS). DARTS experiments were performed on Hela cell lysates with the purpose of identifying MA main target protein(s); t-LiP-MS was then applied for an in-depth investigation of the MA-target protein interaction. Both these techniques exploit limited proteolysis couple

Cheminformatics-Guided Exploration of Synthetic Marine Natural Product-Inspired Brominated Indole-3-Glyoxylamides and Their Potentials for Drug Discovery.

Marine natural products (MNPs) continue to be tested primarily in cellular toxicity assays, both mammalian and microbial, despite most being inactive at concentrations relevant to drug discovery. These MNPs become missed opportunities and represent a wasteful use of precious bioresources. The use of cheminformatics aligned with published bioactivity data can provide insights to direct the choice of bioassays for the evaluation of new MNPs. Cheminformatics analysis of MNPs found in MarinLit (n = 39,730) up to the end of 2023 highlighted indol-3-yl-glyoxylamides (IGAs, n = 24) as a group of MNPs

Effect of brominated flame retardants exposure on liver function and the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in the US population.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between brominated flame retardants (BFRs) exposure and the human liver was still not well understood. METHODS: A total of 3108 participants (age > 12) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database spanning from 2005 to 2016 were included as the study population, with nine BFRs exhibiting a detection rate of over 70% serving as the exposure factor. The singular effects and combined effects of BFRs exposure on liver injury, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and advanced hepatic fibrosis (AHF) were evaluated separately. Finally

The role of coagulation on the fate of PFAS, brominated flame retardants and other trace contaminants in tertiary wastewater treatment for phosphorus control.

Coagulant dosing to achieve low phosphorus concentrations in wastewater effluents may favour the removal of trace organics such as pharmaceuticals, plasticisers and flame retardants. Nevertheless, the behaviour of trace organics in coagulation processes is currently poorly understood because of the complex interactions between these compounds, the coagulants and dissolved organic matter (DOM). This study assessed the coagulation removal from synthetic secondary effluent of twenty-four compounds including ten PFAS and four brominated flame retardants. Testing involved two coagulants (alum, ferr

The Sponge-Derived Brominated Compound Aeroplysinin-1 Impairs the Endothelial Inflammatory Response through Inhibition of the NF-κB Pathway.

(+)-Aeroplysinin-1 (Apl-1) is a brominated compound isolated from the marine sponge Aplysina aerophoba that exhibits pleiotropic bioactive effects, impairing cell growth in cancer cells, inhibiting angiogenesis in vitro and in vivo and modulating the redox status of different cell types, among other reported activities. In addition to the aforementioned effects, the anti-inflammatory potential of this natural compound was explored in previous work of our laboratory, but the mechanism of action underlying this effect was not described. In this work, we delve into the anti-inflammatory effect of

Regional contamination versus regional dietary differences: understanding geographic variation in brominated and chlorinated contaminant levels in polar bears.

The relative contribution of regional contamination versus dietary differences to geographic variation in polar bear (Ursus maritimus) contaminant levels is unknown. Dietary variation between Alaska, Canada, East Greenland, and Svalbard subpopulations was assessed by muscle nitrogen and carbon stable isotope (δ(15)N, δ(13)C) and adipose fatty acid (FA) signatures relative to their main prey (ringed seals). Western and southern Hudson Bay signatures were characterized by depleted δ(15)N and δ(13)C, lower proportions of C(20) and C(22) monounsaturated FAs and higher proportions of C(18) and long

Atroposelective Bromination for the Synthesis of Chiral Biaryl Phosphines via Cross-Assembled Catalysis with Chiral Phosphoric Acid and Achiral Phenol.

Enantioselective electrophilic halogenation using organocatalysts has emerged as a powerful tool in asymmetric synthesis, yet its application has been largely concentrated on substrates bearing hydrogen bond donors. This prerequisite aligns with the design of conventional bifunctional catalysts, which operate through complementary hydrogen bond interactions with both the substrate and N-haloamide reagents. Chiral Buchwald-type ligands are useful monophosphine ligands, but their preparation mainly relies on kinetic resolution. Catalytic atroposelective halogenation of achiral Buchwald-type liga

Epigenome-wide association study of gestational exposure to organophosphate esters and replacement brominated flame retardants with newborn DNA methylation.

BACKGROUND: DNA methylation (DNAm) has been proposed to mediate the associations of gestational exposure to organophosphate esters (OPEs) and replacement brominated flame retardants (RBFRs) with health outcomes. However, there have not been previous epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS) on the impact of prenatal exposure to these chemicals on newborn DNAm. METHODS: In 252 pregnant women recruited to the Health Outcomes and Measures of Environment (HOME) Study from 2003 to 2006 in Cincinnati, Ohio, we measured the house dust concentrations of 4 OPEs and 2 RBFRs at 20 weeks of gestation and
