Bronchogenic cysts are congenital cystic lesions of foregut origin, usually intra-pulmonary or mediastinal in location. Peri-oesophageal bronchogenic cysts are rare, while intra-oesophageal cysts are almost always considered as enterogenous owing to their location and their composition. We report here an unusual case of a young adult with an intramural bronchogenic cyst causing dysphagia. Despite the fact that the cyst was completely embedded in the oesophageal wall, the pathological findings revealed the respiratory origin of the cyst. An extramucosal excision of the cyst was performed establ…

A patient of 30 year-old male with a bronchogenic cyst in the mediastinum detected as an incidental finding on a routine chest X-ray is presented. Laboratory examinations did not reveal any significant abnormalities. Chest X-ray and TAC revealed the mass lesion with smooth margen, low density and homogeneous at the middle mediastinum. Treatment consisted in the resection of the cyst by left thoracic approach. Histologically, the lesion was typical a bronchogenic cyst.

Between 1974 and 1993, 22 adults with bronchogenic cysts were operated in our hospital: 14 men and 8 women, ranging from 11 to 62 years old. The location was mediastinal in 13 (59.1%) and intrapulmonary in 9 (40.9%). Cysts were symptomatic (chest pain and recurrent bronchiolitis) in 20 patients (91%). The perioperative complications include infection in lungs and in the cysts and dysphagia due to esophageal compression. Chest pain was the main symptom in mediastinal cyst and recurrent infection of lungs in intrapulmonary cysts. Plain chest radiographs showed round shadows. Occasional air-fluid…

A case of mediastinal bronchogenic cyst communicating with the esophagus was reported. Previously, only 2 cases have been reported in the available literature. A 34-year-old man was admitted with a cystic mass communicating with the esophagus which was demonstrated on a barium study. Operation was performed with a suspect of esophageal diverticulum or congenital cyst with esophageal communication. At right thoracotomy, a mass measuring 6.0 x 5.0 cm with a well-defined patent communication to the esophagus was resected. It was a monolocular cyst containing a small amount of viscous mucus. Histo…

Paraesophageal bronchogenic cyst is a rare disease. Only 24 cases have been previously reported in Japan. Recently, we experienced two successful cases of this disease. Two cases (64-year-old man and 31-year-old man) were both asymptomatic and pointed out by chance on the chest X-ray at the left posterior mediastinum. The second case was an intramural esophageal cyst. Microscopic examination showed the typical findings of the bronchogenic cyst, as the inner wall of the cyst was covered with ciliated columnar epithelium and the wall consisted of cartilage, mucous glands and smooth muscle. Both …

21 cases of bronchogenic cysts and 8 cases of oesophageal duplications obstructing trachea and main bronchus are described. These mediastinal obstructing cysts should be recognized very early to avoid complications: respiratory distress and destroyed lung particularly. Surgery is not difficult and the results are good. 28 children are alive with no symptom and one death only occurred.

A 32-year-old female presented with palpitations and chest discomfort. The patient had a history of pericardiotomy due to pericardial effusion. Multimodal imaging, including echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), and coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) showed a single mass in the pericardium as the cause of the symptoms. Furthermore, its location and potential complications were accurately defined. The patient underwent a successful surgical resection of the pericardial cyst, microscopic histopathological examination was compatible with a bronchogenic cyst, a very rare…

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital anomalies that they are usually diagnosed prenatally during the routine second trimester scan. We present such a rare case of bronchogenic cyst in a fetus. Our initial scan demonstrated a big cystic mass, which enlarged progressively causing shifting of the mediastinum and compression of the fetal heart. Consequent hydrops fetalis was treated with thoracoamniotic shunt and the pregnancy continued with no further complications. Pontnatal period, surgery and long term follow-up was uneventful.

Bronchogenic cysts originate from anomalous development of the ventral foregut. Although treatment of asymptomatic bronchogenic cysts remains controversial, symptomatic bronchogenic cysts should be surgically removed. We report a case of a 62-year-old man with an infected bronchogenic cyst. We drained the cyst using transesophageal endoscopic ultrasonography to control the inflammation and decrease the size of the cyst; we subsequently resected the cyst. Five months after resection, the patient was well, and computed tomography showed no evidence of cyst recurrence.

Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) can be life threatening if they compress vital structures in infants and small children. In particular, subcarinal cysts can be life-threatening and compromise the airways. In infants, the initial presentation may be respiratory distress. We report a case of mediastinal cystic mass compressing the main left bronchus. The case was an 18-month-old boy who had been admitted with acute respiratory distress. Chest x-ray showed overdistension of the left lung and a mediastinal shift. Foreign body aspiration was diagnosed. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed, which has s…

OBJECTIVES: bronchogenic cysts are uncommon congenital cystic lesions. Most are incidentally detected and require surgical excision for histological diagnosis, symptom relief, and to prevent complications. Video-assisted thoracoscopic resection is preferable in suitable patients. In this study, we reviewed the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and thoracoscopic treatment of bronchogenic cysts.
METHODS: from January 2001 to December 2011, 14 patients with bronchogenic cyst underwent thoracoscopic surgery for excision of the cyst. Their mean age was 24 years. Twelve patients were symptomatic (8…

Bronchogenic cysts are embryological remnants occurring as developmental abnormalities of the primary foregut. The most common locations of these cysts are the mediastinum, lung parenchyma, and inferior pulmonary ligament. An intrapericardial location is an extremely rare finding. We describe the case of a 76-year-old man with aortic valve stenosis and coronary artery disease, in whom an intrapericardial bronchogenic cyst was found incidentally during the open heart procedure.

A bronchogenic cyst (BC) is a rare congenital lesion that may cause life-threatening organ compression in children, but is generally asymptomatic in adults unless there are other complications. In the present report, a 34-year-old woman in whom a BC was complicated by tuberculosis infection is described. Due to the small size of the BC, it was asymptomatic and could not be diagnosed until she was treated with antituberculosis medications.

Bronchogenic cysts are lesions of congenital origin derived from the primitive foregut. The usual presentation of bronchogenic cyst in the mediastinum is related to cyst infection or adjacent organs compression. A case of a bronchogenic esophageal cyst presenting with progressive dysphagia in a 46-year-old man is described. A video-assisted thoracoscopic excision was performed successfully. Details of the procedure are discussed.

We report a case of a 1-month-old boy who has developed respiratory distress. Chest X-ray and CT scan showed over distension of the left upp … ystic mass. Accordingly, the patient underwent thoracotomy. Surgical examination found a subcarinal bronchogenic cyst which compressed the main left bronchus, causing the CLE of both upper and lower left lobes. Histological examination of removed cyst confirmed these data. Authors discuss causes of diagnostic delay.
