The development of new technologies in the field of eating disorders should help to improve access to care and serve to complement traditional treatments, notably after hospitalisations, to prevent early relapses. Mobile applications considered appropriate by experts, all Anglo-Saxon, do not necessarily offer the expected features. A French application has been developed at Sainte-Anne general hospital in Paris. It comprises a logbook, therapeutic tools and cognitive remediation games which favour better adaptability and improve psychological functioning.

OBJECTIVE: Several overlapping cognitive processes have been identified in eating disorders (EDs) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Drawing from the OCD literature, the present study examined whether bulimia nervosa (BN) is associated with a maladaptive inductive reasoning style characterized by the over-investment in possibility-based (as opposed to reality-based) information.
METHOD: Women with BN (n = 25) and healthy controls (HC; n = 24) completed the Inference Processes Task (IPT), an ecological inductive reasoning task previously validated in OCD samples. Participants also comple…

This case study presents the progress of one patient with bulimia nervosa who was originally very compromised in psychological domains that are the focus of analytic treatment, and includes in-session therapeutic process and a range of outcomes, for example, eating disorder symptoms, attachment status, and reflective functioning. Nested in a study showing more rapid behavioral improvement in subjects receiving cognitive behavior therapy than in subjects receiving psychoanalytic psychotherapy, the case highlights the importance of supplementing RCTs with single case studies and the need of adap…

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder associating binge eating with inappropriate compensatory methods. Patients suffer from multiple organic, psychological and social complications. Of these, the somatic consequences are numerous and of varying degrees of seriousness. Regular monitoring is therefore essential in order to identify them and treat them.

The goal of this study was to examine associations between dimensions of emotion dysregulation and eating disorder (ED) symptoms in bulimia nervosa (BN). This investigation used baseline data from a BN treatment study that included 80 adults (90% women) with full or subthreshold BN. Participants completed the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) and the Eating Disorders Examination interview. The Eating Disorders Examination global score was significantly correlated with the DERS total score, as well as several DERS subscales: nonacceptance, impulse and strategies. Further, the DERS…

This report offers the first detailed description of repetitive eructation (belching) in a patient with bulimia nervosa. The case was a man in his 30's with bulimia nervosa characterized by daily bingeing and purging behavior. Detailed assessment revealed repetitive eructation which was construed as a learned behavior precipitated and maintained by aerophagia (air swallowing) secondary to regular binge-eating. Eructation was associated with a strong sense of "relief" that shared a common phenomenology with other purging behaviors. Repetitive eructation was addressed as part of outpatient treat…

A 14-year-old girl with a history of nonpurging bulimia nervosa (BN) was presented with muscular pain and weakness after several days of fasting and vigorous exercise. On hospital admission, the serum creatine kinase was 3,277 U/L and serum potassium was 2.5 mmol/L. The creatine kinase level reached a peak of 4,588 U/L before declining after intravenous hydration and correction of electrolytes. Renal function remained normal throughout hospitalization. Rhabdomyolysis has not been previously reported as a complication of BN in an adolescent or in nonpurging BN. Practitioners who treat patients …

OBJECTIVE: To review the evidence for the validity and utility of subtyping bulimia nervosa (BN) into a purging (BN-P) and a nonpurging subtype (BN-NP), and of distinguishing BN-NP from binge eating disorder (BED), by comparing course, complications, and treatment.
METHOD: A literature search of psychiatry databases for studies published in peer-reviewed journals that used the DSM-definitions of BN and BED, and included both individuals with BN-NP and individuals with BN-P and/or BED.
RESULTS: Twenty-three studies compared individuals with BN-NP (N = 671) to individuals with BN-P (N = 1795) …

OBJECTIVE: To compare comorbid psychopathology and substance use among women with bulimia nervosa (BN) based on smoking status.
METHOD: Forty women diagnosed with BN (20 smokers, 20 nonsmokers) completed written self-report measures of depressive symptoms, substance use, and alcohol abuse.
RESULTS: Smokers reported more symptoms of depression and alcohol abuse and were more likely to use alcohol than nonsmokers, whereas caffeine consumption did not significantly differ between the two groups.
CONCLUSION: Smokers with BN may represent a distinct subtype characterized by high rates of comorbi…

OBJECTIVE: The goals of the current study were to compare the relapse rates obtained when definitions of both remission and relapse were systematically varied and to propose some consensus definitions related to relapse in bulimia nervosa (BN).
METHOD: This was an uncontrolled, prospective follow-up study based on 46 women who met criteria for BN (based on criteria in the 3rd Rev. ed. of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders [Washington, DC: American Psychiatric Association]) before treatment and were abstinent or had low frequency symptoms after treatment. To study the role of adiponectin, a novel adipocyte-specific secreted protein, on the pathophysiology of eating disorders, circulating levels of fasting adiponectin, leptin, insulin, and glucose were measured in 31 female patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and in 11 with bulimia nervosa. Hormone levels were compared with 16 age-matched, normal body weight controls, six healthy constitutionally thin subjects, and nine obese subjects. Moreover, changes in levels were reevaluated after nutritional treatment and weight gain in 13 patients with AN. Serum adiponectin concentrations in AN and bulimi…

BACKGROUND: Because the stomach plays an important role in the development of satiety, gastric function was examined in bulimia nervosa (BN).
METHODS: Sixteen patients with BN and 16 controls swallowed an inflatable bag, which was positioned in the proximal stomach. Minimal distending pressure (MDP), the pressure needed to overcome intraabdominal pressure, was determined. Gastric volume was recorded after subjects drank a liquid meal.
RESULTS: MDP was similar in patient and control groups (7.56 +/- 2.13 vs. 7.13 +/- 2.06 mmHg; t =.57, df = 30, p =.58). Average postmeal gastric relaxation was…

Managing epilepsy during pregnancy is to balance the maternal and fetal risks associated with uncontrolled seizures against the potential teratogenic effects of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). A rational approach requires knowledge of such risks as well as an understanding of the effects of pregnancy on seizure control and of gestational effects on AED disposition. Uncontrolled tonic-clonic seizures are potentially hazardous to the mother and, although strict evidence is lacking, are generally also assumed to be more harmful to the fetus than are AEDs. However, infants who have been exposed to AED

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to investigate psychological and physiological responses of bulimic patients to the repeated presentation of food cues.
METHOD: On 2 subsequent days, 48 bulimic women (DSM-IV) were confronted with high- or low-caloric food for 20 min. A control group (n = 24) was exposed to high-caloric food once. Blood sugar levels were manipulated with a glucose load.
RESULTS: High-caloric food only elicited increases in urge to binge, subjective and physiological stress in the first session. During the second session, reported urge to binge and subjective stress was si
