Electrical microstimulation evokes saccades in posterior parietal cortex of common marmosets.

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is a small-bodied New World primate increasing in prominence as a model animal for neuroscience research. The lissencephalic cortex of this primate species provides substantial advantages for the application of electrophysiological techniques such as high-density and laminar recordings, which have the capacity to advance our understanding of local and laminar cortical circuits and their roles in cognitive and motor functions. This is particularly the case with respect to the oculomotor system, as critical cortical areas of this network such as the front…

Glomerulonephritis in common marmosets infected with Plasmodium brasilianum and Epstein-Barr virus.

Plasmodium brasilianum causes chronic quartan malaria in the common marmoset Callithrix jacchus, whereas Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is followed by an infectious mononucleosis-like syndrome that resolves. We infected weanling marmosets with one or both of these pathogens. Timing of the infections influenced outcome. Six animals were simultaneously infected with both agents; four became seriously ill (with accompanying proteinuria and edema) and either died or were killed. Histopathology indicated that glomerulonephritis had developed. The two survivors had more-prolonged parasitemia tha…

Contribution of ultrasound examination in diagnosing platynosomiasis and correlation with macro and microscopic findings in callitrichids kept under human care.

BACKGROUND: Platynosomiasis in non-human primates kept under human care causes chronic disease of the bile ducts and liver, which initially … occurrence of platynosomiasis. RESULTS: In six marmosets (one C. aurita, two C. jacchus, and three Callithrix sp.), Platynosomum infection was confirmed macroscopically (presence of adult trematodes in the gallbladder) and microscopically (adults, larvae, and eggs in histological examinations and eggs in bile and feces). These findings were compatible with …

Age exacerbates the effect of myopia on retinal capillaries and string vessels.

The retinal vasculature supplies oxygen and nutrition to the cells and is crucial for an adequate retinal function. In myopia, excessive eye growth is associated with various anatomical changes that can lead to myopia-related complications. However, how myopia-induced ocular growth affects the integrity of the aged retinal microvasculature at the cellular level is not well understood. Here, we studied how aging interacts with myopia-induced alteration of the retinal microvasculature in fourteen marmoset retinas (Callithrix jacchus). String vessel and capillary branchpoint were imaged and quant…

Transmammary transmission of mesocercariae of Alaria marcianae (Trematoda) in experimentally infected primates.

A lactating primate, Callithrix jacchus, was infected experimentally with 600 mesocercariae of Alaria marcianae 10 days after parturition to determine if she would transmit the mesocercariae to her offspring. Her twin infants were examined 4 wk postinoculation and 16 mesocercariae were found in their tissues. The female was mated again and gave birth to a litter of triplets. She was not given additional mesocercariae. One infant died within hours of birth without suckling and was found negative for any stage of A. marcianae. The other 2 were allowed to nurse for 5 wk, examined and found to be …

Therapeutic effect of the antiviral agent ribavirin in Junín virus infection of primates.

In order to assess the effect of the antiviral Ribavirin on the course of Junín virus infection in Callithrix jacchus, seven inoculated monkeys were treated with 15 mg of the drug, twice a day, starting 6 days after infection when all animals were viremic. The three untreated controls showed typical signs of Junín virus infection at 14 days pi and their mean time of death was 18 days. In contrast, no signs of illness were detected in Ribavirin-treated animals until 24 days pi, when marmosets showed signs of neurological involvement: 5 of these animals died (mean day of death: 36) but the two r…

Hypoxemia after single-shot anesthesia in common marmosets.

BACKGROUND: It remains unknown how single-shot anesthesia influences physical parameters, especially respiratory function and blood oxygen level of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) which came to be used for laboratory research. METHODS: We measured blood oxygen levels, both before and after oxygenation, in 13 common marmosets under two single-shot anesthesia conditions: ketamine/xylazine/atropine and alphaxalone. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: We found that SpO2 values decreased to about 80% in the ketamine/xylazine/atropine protocol and fell just below 90% in the alphaxalone protocol. We obs…

Choroidal Morphology and Photoreceptor Activity Are Related and Affected by Myopia Development.

PURPOSE: The choroid is critical for the regulation of eye growth and is involved in the pathogenesis of myopia-associated ocular complications. This study explores the relationship among choroidal biometry, photoreceptor activity, and myopic growth in marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) with lens-induced myopia. METHODS: A total of 34 common marmosets aged 92 to 273 days old were included in this study. Axial myopia was induced in 17 marmosets using negative soft contact lenses and 17 marmosets served as untreated controls. Cycloplegic refraction (RE) and vitreous chamber depth (VCD) were measure…

Anxious about rejection, avoidant of neglect: Infant marmosets tune their attachment based on individual caregiver's parenting style.

Children's secure attachment with their primary caregivers is crucial for physical, cognitive, and emotional maturation. Yet, the causal links between specific parenting behaviors and infant attachment patterns are not fully understood. Here we report infant attachment in New World monkeys common marmosets, characterized by shared infant care among parents and older siblings and complex vocal communications. By integrating natural variations in parenting styles and subsecond-scale microanalyses of dyadic vocal and physical interactions, we demonstrate that marmoset infants signal their needs t

The age-related pattern of inner retinal thickening is affected by myopia development and progression.

The longitudinal effect of myopic eye growth on each individual retinal layer has not been described to date on an established non-human primate (NHP) model of myopia. We evaluated the changes experienced by the overall and individual central and mid-peripheral retinal thickness profiles in marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) induced with myopia continuously for 5.5 months compared to controls using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. Cycloplegic refractive state (Rx), vitreous chamber depth (VCD) and retinal thickness were measured at baseline and after 3 and 5.5 months on thirteen marmo…

Alterations in common marmoset gut microbiome associated with duodenal strictures.

Chronic gastrointestinal (GI) diseases are the most common diseases in captive common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). Despite standardized housing, diet and husbandry, a recently described gastrointestinal syndrome characterized by duodenal ulcers and strictures was observed in a subset of marmosets sourced from the New England Primate Research Center. As changes in the gut microbiome have been associated with GI diseases, the gut microbiome of 52 healthy, non-stricture marmosets (153 samples) were compared to the gut microbiome of 21 captive marmosets diagnosed with a duodenal ulcer/stricture…

Complete genome analysis confirms that the pygmy marmoset adenovirus is a variant of the skunk adenovirus 1 - Short communication.

The complete genomic sequence along with phylogenetic analyses of an adenovirus (AdV), isolated from a dead captive pygmy marmoset (Callithrix pygmaea) from a Hungarian zoo is reported. Earlier, based on the phylogenetic analysis of the sequence of a PCR-amplified fragment from the DNA polymerase gene, the pygmy marmoset AdV (PMAdV) has been reported to cluster closest to certain chiropteran AdVs. In the following years similar AdVs were discovered in additional mammalian hosts, including a skunk (Mephitis mephitis), African pygmy hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris), North American porcupines (Er…

Critique of Pure Marmoset.

The common marmoset, a New World (platyrrhine) monkey, is currently being fast-tracked as a non-human primate model species, especially for genetic modification but also as a general-purpose model for research on the brain and behavior bearing on the human condition. Compared to the currently dominant primate model, the catarrhine macaque monkey, marmosets are notable for certain evolutionary specializations, including their propensity for twin births, their very small size (a result of phyletic dwarfism), and features related to their small size (rapid development and relatively short lifespa

MR Imaging Properties of ex vivo Common Marmoset Brain after Formaldehyde Fixation.

PURPOSE: Ex vivo brains have different MRI properties than in vivo brains because of chemical changes caused by fixative solutions, which change the signal intensity and/or tissue contrast on MR images. In this study, we investigated and compared the MRI properties of in vivo and ex vivo brains. METHODS: Using a Bruker 9.4T experimental scanner unit for animals (Biospin GmbH, Ettlingen, Germany), we performed this study on the common marmoset. We measured the relaxation and diffusion values in the white matter and cortex of common marmosets and compared these values between in vivo brains (n

Precise Motor Control Enables Rapid Flexibility in Vocal Behavior of Marmoset Monkeys.

Investigating the evolution of human speech is difficult and controversial because human speech surpasses nonhuman primate vocal communication in scope and flexibility [1-3]. Monkey vocalizations have been assumed to be largely innate, highly affective, and stereotyped for over 50 years [4, 5]. Recently, this perception has dramatically changed. Current studies have revealed distinct learning mechanisms during vocal development [6-8] and vocal flexibility, allowing monkeys to cognitively control when [9, 10], where [11], and what to vocalize [10, 12, 13]. However, specific call features (e.g.,

A primate model animal revealed the inter-species differences and similarities in the subtype specifications of the spiral ganglion neurons.

Type I spiral ganglion neurons are peripheral neurons essential for hearing perception. While they can be subdivided in mice based on characteristic gene expression patterns, detailed examinations of these subtypes in primates and humans are lacking. In this study, we investigated the developmental subtypes of spiral ganglion neurons in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). We confirmed that Type I spiral ganglion can be divided based on the characteristic gene expression patterns of several marker genes. However, some combinations of these genes differ from those in rodents, suggesting co…

Detection of herpesviruses in neotropical primates from São Paulo, Brazil.

Transmission of herpesvirus between humans and non-human primates represents a serious potential threat to human health and endangered species conservation. This study aimed to identify herpesvirus genomes in samples of neotropical primates (NTPs) in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. A total of 242 NTPs, including Callithrix sp., Alouatta sp., Sapajus sp., and Callicebus sp., were evaluated by pan-herpesvirus polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing. Sixty-two (25.6%) samples containing genome segments representative of members of the family Herpesviridae, including 16.1% for Callitrichine…

Normal tension glaucoma-like degeneration of the visual system in aged marmosets.

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is a non-human primate that provides valuable models for neuroscience and aging research due to its anatomical similarities to humans and relatively short lifespan. This study was carried out to examine whether aged marmosets develop glaucoma, as seen in humans. We found that 11% of the aged marmosets presented with glaucoma-like characteristics; this incident rate is very similar to that in humans. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a significant volume loss in the visual cortex, and histological analyses confirmed the degeneration of the lateral genicu…
