The aim of the present study is to determine if the correlation between molecular mobility and crystallization growth rates exists over a broad temperature range from temperatures below the glass transition (T(g)) to temperatures above the glass transition. Phenobarbital and solid dispersions of phenobarbital with PVP and L-proline were studied in this research. Relaxation times below and above the T(g) were measured. Glassy states of nine acetaminophen-nifedipine compositions have been made by slowly supercooling their melts, and calorimetric T(g) and the nonexponential, nonlinear relaxation parameters beta and x that are used in modeling the mobility of a pharmaceutical determined. Taking xanthine (Xan) as an example, validity of an approach to experimental investigations of nucleotide bases' tautomeric equilibrium, based on the use of methyl derivatives corresponding to their prototropic tautomers, was studied by (1)H NMR in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and by quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. We describe a novel thermoresponsive polymeric drug delivery system based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) with isotopically labellable end groups [l-tyrosinamide or diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)] designed for local radiotherapy. The polymers are readily soluble in isotonic aqueous sodium chloride at room temperature and the phase separation is complete at body temperature as proved by DSC measurements. Sufficent binding capacity for radionuclides and chemical stability are demonstrated on 125I and 90Y-labelled polymers.

The effect in vitro of caffeine, theophylline and enprofylline on overall platelet metabolism was investigated by a sensitive microcalorimetric method. Platelet heat production rate was found to be decreased significantly in the presence of any of the three methylxanthines in mM concentrations. Decreased nutritional intake or preexisting malnutrition is associated with increased morbidity and mortality during hospital stay. However nutritional support in particular for the ICU patient is not trivial. Hyperalimentation in the acute phase of critical illness but also hypoalimentation in the chronic and stable phase of illness has to be avoided. Ideally about 25 kcal/kg/d should be targeted over a few days during metabolic monitoring. Alternatively indirect calorimetry should be applied where available.

A differential scanning calorimetry and infrared spectrophotometry study of potential interactions between oxamniquine and praziquantel, two synergistic anti-parasitic drugs, indicated that they did not interact on fusion. Mixtures of the two drugs with each of nine common pharmaceutical excipients (Ac-Di-Sol, Avicel, Crospovidone, calcium phosphate, magnesium stearate, starch, lactose, PEG 6000, stearic acid) appeared to interact only with stearic acid. These results suggested that a combination solid dosage form was feasible.

An early endothermic peak at approximately 150 degrees C was observed for crystalline sucrose by differential scanning calorimetry. The enthalpy at this temperature was found to vary with recrystallised sucrose from different sources. The addition of mineral salts to recrystallisation solutions decreased the enthalpy of the peak at around 150 degrees C, whereas the absence of salts increased it.
