Direct Surgical Repair of Spontaneous Spinal CSF Leak: A Retrospective Canadian Cohort and Systematic Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Spinal CSF leaks are a known cause of spontaneous intracranial hypotension, often presenting with orthostatic headaches and other neurological symptoms. While epidural blood patches are commonly used as initial treatment, many patients require surgery due to persistent symptoms. This study integrates a retrospective institutional cohort and a systematic literature review to evaluate the safety and efficacy of surgical dural repair for spontaneous spinal CSF leaks. METHODS: A retrospective chart review included all patients who underwent surgery for spontaneous spinal CSF leak at a

Trajectories of academic performance in sexually abused children and potential correlates.

Background: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is associated with detrimental consequences in children, including lower academic performance. However, studies have rarely explored the diversity of longitudinal academic profiles among CSA victims. Objectives: The objectives of this study were (1) to identify trajectories of academic performance in CSA victims and (2) to explore potential correlates of these trajectories. Participants and settings: The study involved 738 Canadian children between the ages of 5 and 14 who had experienced CSA and their non-offending parent and their teacher. Methods: At

Impact of COVID-19 on lifestyle habits and mental health symptoms in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in Canada.

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic created an environment of restricted access to health and recreation services. Lifestyle habits including sleep, eating, exercise, and screen use were modified, potentially exacerbating adverse mental health outcomes. This study investigates the impact of COVID-19 on lifestyle habits and mental health symptoms in paediatric attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in Canada. METHODS: An online survey was distributed across Canada to caregivers of children with ADHD (children aged 5 to 18 years) assessing depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7), ADHD (SNAP-

Childhood adversity and subsequent mental health status in adulthood: screening for associations using two linked surveys.

AIMS: Accumulating evidence links childhood adversity to negative health outcomes in adulthood. However, most of the available evidence is retrospective and subject to recall bias. Published reports have sometimes focused on specific childhood exposures (e.g. abuse) and/or specific outcomes (e.g. major depression). Other studies have linked childhood adversity to a large and diverse number of adult risk factors and health outcomes such as cardiovascular disease. To advance this literature, we undertook a broad examination of data from two linked surveys. The goal was to avoid retrospective dis

Patterns of allergic sensitization and atopic dermatitis from 1 to 3 years: Effects on allergic diseases.

BACKGROUND: While allergic sensitization and atopic dermatitis (AD) are known to increase the risk for allergic diseases, the impact of different temporal and clinical patterns of sensitization and AD is less well defined. OBJECTIVE: We investigated patterns of sensitization and AD from early infancy to age 3, and the differential risk of developing allergic diseases within each pattern in a general cohort. METHODS: Children (n = 2629) from the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) Study underwent skin prick tests and were assessed clinically for AD at ages 1 and 3 years.

Health Behaviors in Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Childhood Cancer Survivors: Prevalence, Determinants, and Comparison With Population Controls.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) are at lifelong risk for late adverse health outcomes. Healthy behaviors, including physical activity, substance avoidance, adequate sleep, and sun protection, are critical to mitigating these risks. Yet, data on their prevalence and determinants in this population remain limited. This study aims to describe health behaviors among adolescent and young adult (AYA) CCS in Alberta, Canada, compare them with population-based controls, and identify associated factors for suboptimal health behaviors. METHODS: This is a longitudinal cohort study of 312

Associations between mental health disorder symptoms and cardiac function among Royal Canadian Mounted police cadets during the Cadet training program.

Cardiac regulation is a complex process involving interplay between neuroautonomic and neuroendocrine systems. Occupations frequently exposed to potentially psychologically traumatic events (PPTEs; e.g., fire or explosion, natural disaster, sexual assault), such as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), report elevated Posttraumatic Stress Injuries (PTSIs; e.g., Posttraumatic Stress Disorder [PTSD], Major Depressive Disorder [MDD], Generalized Anxiety Disorder [GAD], Social Anxiety Disorder [SAD], Alcohol Use Disorder [AUD]). Neurohormonal pathway dysfunction is associated with mental healt

Predictors of change in sleep disturbance in Canadian long-term care facilities: a longitudinal analysis based on interRAI assessments.

PURPOSE: Sleep disturbance is prevalent in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), yet there is limited understanding of individual factors predicting changes in sleep within these populations. Our objective was to determine predictors of sleep disturbance in LTCFs and investigate variation in prevalence across facilities in two Canadian provinces-New Brunswick and Saskatchewan. METHOD: This retrospective longitudinal cohort study used interRAI comprehensive health assessment data from 2016 to 2021, encompassing 21,394 older adults aged ≥ 65 years across 228 LTCFs. Generalised estimating equations

Impact of disability status on ischemic stroke costs in Canada in the first year.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal, patient-level data on resource use and costs after an ischemic stroke are lacking in Canada. The objectives of this analysis were to calculate costs for the first year post-stroke and determine the impact of disability on costs. METHODOLOGY: The Economic Burden of Ischemic Stroke (BURST) Study was a one-year prospective study with a cohort of ischemic stroke patients recruited at 12 Canadian stroke centres. Clinical history, disability, health preference and resource utilization information was collected at discharge, three months, six months and one year. Resources

The effect of cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors on bone mineral density: results from the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study.

INTRODUCTION: The use of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors has been demonstrated to not only impair load-induced bone formation but also prevent menopause-associated bone loss. We hypothesized that COX-2 inhibitor use would be associated with increased bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women not using estrogen therapy and, conversely, with decreased BMD in men. METHODS: The Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study is a longitudinal, randomly selected, population-based community cohort. We present data from men (n=2,004) and postmenopausal women age 65 and older (n=2,776) who under

A Canadian, retrospective, multicenter experience with selexipag for a heterogeneous group of pediatric pulmonary hypertension patients.

INTRODUCTION: Selexipag, an oral nonprostanoid prostaglandin receptor agonist, has led to reduced morbidity and mortality in adults with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). While the adult literature has been extrapolated to suggest selexipag as an oral treatment for severe pediatric pulmonary hypertension (PH), longitudinal, multicenter data on the benefits of selexipag in this population are lacking. The purpose of this study is to present a longitudinal, multicentre experience with selexipag in a relatively large cohort of pediatric PH patients and add to the existing selexipag literatur

Monitoring of metabolic adverse events of second-generation antipsychotics in a naive paediatric population followed in mental health outpatient and inpatient clinical settings: MEMAS prospective study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) are widely used in the paediatric population. It is currently established that SGAs may induce metabolic adverse events (AEs) such as weight gain, perturbation of blood lipids or glucose with risk of potential cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The Canadian Alliance for Monitoring Effectiveness and Safety of Antipsychotics in children (CAMESA) has published recommendations for monitoring the metabolic AEs of SGAs. Factors that may be associated with the onset of SGA's metabolic AEs and long-term consequences are less studied in the lit

Derivation of probable child maltreatment indicators using prospectively recorded information between 5 months and 17 years in a longitudinal cohort of Canadian children.

BACKGROUND: Both prospective and retrospective measures of child maltreatment predict mental and physical health problems, despite their weak concordance. Research remains largely based on retrospective reports spanning the entire childhood due to a scarcity of prospectively completed measures targeting maltreatment specifically. OBJECTIVE: We developed a prospective index of child maltreatment in the Québec Longitudinal Study of Child Development (QLSCD) using prospective information collected from ages 5 months to 17 years and examined its concordance with retrospective maltreatment. Dorsolateral Prefrontal rTMS Symptom Cluster Response Trajectories for Depression.

IMPORTANCE: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an established intervention for treatment-resistant depression, but only a minority of patients achieve remission, and characteristics associated with response are lacking. Sum-score analyses of the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) obscures how distinct symptom clusters change over time. OBJECTIVE: To identify distinct longitudinal symptom-cluster response trajectories during dorsolateral prefrontal rTMS and to determine baseline characteristics associated with trajectory membership. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS:
