Measurements of stride length, gait speed, and distance walked during seven days were obtained from 15 postpolio and eight control subjects. Pedometers were used to measure distance walked. Measurements of stride length and speed were performed three times, and there was a high correlation between tests (R = .852-.969). The pedometers failed to record accurately in some postpolio subjects, and these subjects were dropped from analysis when ambulation distance was used as a variable. A Charcot joint developed following a spinal cord injury in a patient who had sustained a fracture-dislocation of the 12th thoracic vertebra and a spinal cord injury in a cave-in accident in a coal mine 40 years previously, and had since been assisted in walking with the aid of a short leg brace and a cane. Intracranial transplantation of the omentum was performed on a patient with moyamoya disease who presented with diffuse cerebral ischemic symptoms and blindness. Anastomoses were made between the superficial temporal artery and the gastroepiploic artery of the transplanting omentum, and between the superficial temporal and gastroepiploic veins. A case of a displaced transverse fracture of the patella untreated for 2 years in a 67-year-old woman is presented. The patient requested treatment for giving way of the knee. Surgery included mobilization of the proximal fracture fragment, fixation with two cannulated screws, and repair of the medial retinaculum. The lateral retinaculum was left open to provide for better motion. At 1 year postoperatively, she ambulated with a cane, with range of motion examination revealing 5 degrees flexion contracture and 80 degrees flexion.

The possibilities of the use of untypical prostheses of the hip in cases with lesion of the proximal femoral end together with a part of the shaft have been presented. A hip prosthesis with the upper part of the femur was implanted in two cases for neoplastic disease, and in one case for pseudoarthrosis of the femur within the intertrochanteric region. Good early clinical and radiological results was obtained and the total range of motion in the implanted joint was 210 degrees. After operation the patients did not complain about pain and they walked with the aid of a cane.
