Helicobacter pylori infection and association with chronic diseases: A focus on cardiovascular disease, MASLD, and type 2 diabetes.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is a globally prevalent gastrointestinal pathogen increasingly linked to various extra-gastric non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This review addresses the guiding question: What epidemiological and mechanistic links explain the association between H. pylori infection and chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)? The manuscript synthesizes evidence from epidemiological studies and mechanistic research. In CVD, H. pylori exacerbates chron

Successful Surgical Therapy of a Chronically Infected Thoracic Fistula After Repeated Cardiovascular High-Risk Procedures.

Chronic thoracic fistulas after transapical TAVI are rare but serious complications. A 67-year-old male with prior aortic dissection and two transapical valve implantations developed a chronically infected fistula due to retained apical closure material. Multidisciplinary surgery with complete removal of infected tissue, staged debridement, vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) therapy, and targeted antibiotics achieved infection control and successful wound reconstruction using local flaps. The patient recovered uneventfully. Complete foreign material removal and interdisciplinary management are cruc

Myocardial Injury by COVID-19 Infection Assessed by Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging - A Prospective Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: This prospective multicenter study assessed the prevalence of myocardial injury in patients with COVID-19 using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR). METHODS AND RESULTS: We prospectively screened 505 patients with moderate to severe COVID-19 disease from 7 hospitals in Japan. Of these patients, 31 (mean [±SD] age 63.5±10.4 years, 23 [74%] male) suspected of myocardial injury, based on elevated serum troponin or B-type natriuretic peptide concentrations either upon admission or 3 months after discharge, underwent CMR 3 months after discharge. The primary endpoint was the prese

Outcomes of concurrent and delayed leadless pacemaker implantation following extraction of infected cardiovascular implantable electronic device.

INTRODUCTION: The optimal reimplantation strategies following the removal of infected cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) remain inadequately understood. Given the limitations and risks associated with traditional approaches, the investigation of alternative devices, such as leadless pacemakers (LPs), has gained attention due to their potentially lower infection risk. METHODS: We reviewed literature sources including PubMed, Scopus, and Embase, utilizing a combination of search terms. The inclusion criterion was leadless pacemaker (LP) implantation following lead removal (LR

Increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with deep and infected diabetes-related foot ulcers.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Diabetes-related foot ulceration (DFU) is associated with increased cardiovascular risk, but the mechanisms remain unclear. Inflammation and infection are mediators of CVD, which may be important in DFU. METHODS: Prospectively collected data from patients attending a multidisciplinary DFU service were analysed. A deep ulcer was defined as one that reached muscle, tendon or deeper structures. Patients were categorised into four DFU groups: not deep and no infection (D-/I-), not deep but infected (D-/I+), deep with no infection (D+/I-) or deep with infection (D+/I+). Incident m

Exploring the link between cardiovascular risk factors and manifestations in latent tuberculosis infection: a comprehensive literature review.

BACKGROUND: The global burden of tuberculosis (TB) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is overt, and the prevalence of this double burden disease remains steadily rising, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This review aims to explore the association between latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and the development of cardiovascular diseases and risk factors. Furthermore, we elucidated the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms that contribute to this relationship. MAIN BODY: Approximately 25% of the global population carries a dormant form of tuberculosis (TB) infection. During t

Pathophysiological effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the cardiovascular system and its clinical manifestations-a mini review.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a viral infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). COVID-19 may have a mild presentation, with few symptoms, or progress to a severe condition, characterized by generalized inflammation, systemic microvascular involvement, coagulopathy, and pulmonary and cardiovascular complications. Men present with more severe symptoms than women, especially men who are older and who present with comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and a history of atherosclerotic diseases. Owing to its association with endotheli

Moderate Treadmill Exercise Training Improves Cardiovascular and Nitrergic Response and Resistance to Trypanosoma cruzi Infection in Mice.

There is evidence suggesting that exercise training (ET) acts as a factor toward resistance to Trypanosoma cruzi infection. However, the effects of mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), and nitric oxide (NO) during the acute phase of infection has not been elucidated yet. Swiss mice were randomly assigned into four groups: sedentary control (SC, n = 30), trained control (TC, n = 30), sedentary infected (SI, n = 30), and trained infected (TI, n = 30). ET was performed on the treadmill for 9 weeks. After training, the mice were infected with 5 × 103 trypomastigotes of T. cruzi (Y strain

N-terminal-proB-type natriuretic peptide predicts cardiovascular disease events in HIV-infected patients.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is increasing in HIV-infected patients. N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a significant predictor of CVD in the general population. We aimed to quantify the risk of CVD events associated with NT-proBNP at baseline in the Strategies for Management of Anti-Retroviral Therapy study. METHODS: In a nested case-control study, NT-proBNP was measured at baseline in 186 patients who experienced a CVD event over an average of 2.8 years of follow-up and in 329 matched controls. Odds ratios (ORs) associated with baseline levels of NT-proBNP

Inflammation and infection do not promote arterial aging and cardiovascular disease risk factors among lean horticulturalists.

BACKGROUND: Arterial aging is well characterized in industrial populations, but scantly described in populations with little access to modern medicine. Here we characterize health and aging among the Tsimane, Amazonian forager-horticulturalists with short life expectancy, high infectious loads and inflammation, but low adiposity and robust physical fitness. Inflammation has been implicated in all stages of arterial aging, atherogenesis and hypertension, and so we test whether greater inflammation associates with atherosclerosis and CVD risk. In contrast, moderate to vigorous daily activity, mi
