Bulimia nervosa with and without a history of anorexia nervosa.

This study compared two subgroups of women of normal weight with bulimia nervosa: those with a history of anorexia nervosa and those without such a history. Those with a history of anorexia nervosa indicated a desired body weight significantly lower than those without the history. Those with a history of anorexia nervosa were more likely to abuse laxatives and less likely to self-induce vomiting. Both groups reported feeling fat and worrying a great deal about weight and shape issues.

Toxicodynamic approach to management of the poisoned patient.

We recommend a toxicodynamic approach to the management of the poisoned patient. We define the period between ingestion and onset of toxic manifestations (clinical or laboratory) as the preclinical phase, during which the management of the patient necessarily depends solely on the history of ingestion and the predicted toxicity. In the toxic phase during which the patient shows clinical or laboratory evidence of toxicity, the history, clinical status (signs, symptoms, drug levels, laboratory parameters), and toxicodynamics should guide the therapy. In the resolution phase, when the patient sho

The toxicity and efficiency of arecoline hydrobromide in the Tasmanian hydatid control program.

Results on the efficiency and toxicity of arecoline hydrobromide during the first 11 years of the hydatid limitation program in Tasmania are presented. A satisfactory mucous purge was obtained from about 80% of dogs when arecoline was used at 3.25 mg/kg and from about 75% when the dose rate was reduced to 1.62 mg/kg of body weight. Arecoline is considered to have a low efficiency in detecting tapeworm infection in individual dogs, but is valuable as a diagnostic aid in groups of dogs. Toxicity was seen as acute cardiac collapse in about 5 dogs per 1000 dosed. Deaths followed in 1 dog in about

Safety and efficacy of linaclotide as an adjuvant for bowel preparation: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: High-volume polyethylene glycol (PEG) is widely used for bowel preparation, but its large volume and unpleasant taste are common drawbacks. These factors frequently lead to reduced patient adherence. Linaclotide, an FDA-approved drug for constipation, appears to offer a potential solution by lowering the amount of PEG needed. METHODS: Our search included MEDLINE through PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science (WOS), and Cochrane databases. Subgroup analysis was employed for additional stratification. RESULTS: The overall effect estimates regarding total BBPS score indicated no significa

Effect of acuity level and patient characteristics on bowel preparation quality: a retrospective cohort study of inpatient colonoscopies.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Colonoscopy is the primary method to detect mucosal abnormalities in the colon, rectum, and terminal ileum. Inadequate bowel preparation is a common problem and can impede successful visualization during colonoscopy. Although studies identified hospitalization as a predictor of inadequate bowel preparation, acuity of care vary greatly within this patient population. The current study aims to examine the effect of patient characteristics and care level predictors on inadequate bowel preparation quality within the inpatient setting. METHODS: This retrospective study was con

Mandatory vs. optional split-dose bowel preparation for morning colonoscopies: a pragmatic noninferiority randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND : We compared the effectiveness of optional split-dose bowel preparation (SDBP) with mandatory SDBP for morning colonoscopies in usual clinical practice. METHODS : Adult patients undergoing outpatient early morning (8:00 AM-10:30 PM) and late morning (10:30 AM-12:00 PM) colonoscopies were included. Written bowel preparation instructions were provided based on randomization: one group were instructed to take their bowel preparation (4 L polyethylene glycol solution) as a split dose (mandatory), while the comparator group was allowed the choice of SDBP or single-dose bowel preparation

When should patients take simethicone orally before colonoscopy for avoiding bubbles: A single-blind, randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have reported the use of simethicone before colonoscopy removes bubbles. However, guidelines weakly recommend simethicone administration before colonoscopy. The present study aimed to confirm the advantages of taking simethicone and determine the appropriate time for taking simethicone. METHODS: We randomly assigned patients to the following 5 groups according to the administration time: 4 groups were divided based on 2 parameters (the day before and on the day of colonoscopy and before and after bowel cleansing) and the remaining group was the control group. We compa

The effectiveness of walking exercise on the bowel preparation before colonoscopy: a single blind randomized clinical trial study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Bowel preparation is a crucial factor affecting the diagnostic accuracy of colonoscopy, and few randomized control trials evaluated enhancement in bowel preparation. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of walking exercises on bowel preparation before a colonoscopy procedure. METHODS: The present study is a single-blind randomized controlled trial involving 262 patients scheduled for colonoscopy procedures. These patients were randomly assigned to two groups: an intervention group (n = 131) and a control group (n = 131). In the intervention group, particip

3 L split-dose polyethylene glycol is superior to 2 L polyethylene glycol in colonoscopic bowel preparation in relatively high-BMI (≥ 24 kg/m2) individuals: a multicenter randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Whether body mass index (BMI) is a risk factor for poor bowel preparation is controversial, and the optimal bowel preparation regimen for people with a high BMI is unclear. METHODS: We prospectively included 710 individuals with high BMIs (≥ 24 kg/m2) who were scheduled to undergo colonoscopy from January to November 2021 at 7 hospitals. Participants were randomly allocated into 3 L split-dose polyethylene glycol (PEG) group (n=353) and 2 L PEG group (n=357). The primary outcome was the rate of adequate bowel preparation, and the secondary outcomes included Boston Bowel Preparatio

Small bowel cleansing for capsule endoscopy, systematic review and meta- analysis: Timing is the real issue.

BACKGROUND: The optimal small bowel preparation modality before capsule endoscopy (SBCE) is still uncertain, regarding preparation type, dose and timing of administration. AIM: The aim of the study is to evaluate the small bowel cleansing in patients undergoing small bowel capsule endoscopy after fasting alone or active treatment with purgative solutions. METHODS: We searched 4 major scientific databases from inception to December 2021 for studies evaluating small bowel preparation before SBCE. Different preparation efficacy was compared using fasting as reference. Main variables evaluated i
